Note A.—The contest in 1774 was political, Neate being supported by Wilkes (then Lord Mayor), and Hart by the Court party and the personal opponents of Wilkes. The contemporary newspapers give the votes of the Aldermen for and against admitting Hart, which it is interesting to record as showing the political complexion of the Court at that time. 12 Aldermen voted for admitting Hart, viz.: Alsop, Harley, Shakespeare, Sir J. Esdaile, Plumbe, Kennett, Townsend, Oliver, Plomer, Sir W. Rawlinson, Thomas and Hopkins. The minority of 8 was composed of Aldermen Sir C. Asgill, Crosby, Kirkman, Sawbridge, Bull, Sir W. Lewes, Hayley and Newnham. Wilkes, presiding as Lord Mayor, did not vote, and four were absent, Aldermen Bridgen, Sir T. Hallifax, Turner and Peckham. Of the majority, Townsend and Oliver were strong Whigs, but were in personal opposition to Wilkes.
