Note A.—The appointment of Tonge to succeed Fastolf on August 12, 1385, on account of the latter's duties as Constable of Dover Castle leaving him no leisure for those of his Aldermanic office is recorded in Letter Book H, fo. 189 b. Fastolf, however, is found acting as Alderman of the Ward on November 8, 1385 and January 25, 1386 [H.R. 114, ff. 53, 87]. He is also recorded as present among the Aldermen at the election of the Sheriffs on September 13, 1385 (Letter Book H, fo. 195), although a few lines lower on the same folio Tonge's name is given as that of one of the two Aldermen elected auditors on September 21. Probably the substitution of Tonge for Fastolf was only a temporary arrangement and the latter resumed his office after a brief interval.
Note B.—On December 15, 1478, Robert Tate was admitted to act for John Tate on account of the latter's bodily weakness, "admissus est ad occupandam vicem et nomen Johannis Tate, Ald. propter imbecillitatem et infirmitatem ejus" (Journal 8, fo. 190). Shortly after John Tate's death, Robert Tate was elected Alderman of Queenhithe.
