Some of the persons with this surname were merchants (drapers or woolexporters).

  • 50. John son of Geoffrey Hurel, 1315-16 LBE 62 (a minor), J. Hurel 1335-6 Cl (deceased). Geoffrey Hurel, whose will was enrolled in 1315-16, had houses in St. Dunstan. He was a repr. of Tower in 1297 (LBB 237), and is called G. le Hurel 1300 LBC 69. Adam Hurel and John, his brother, were indicted with extortion in 1328-9 (Ann Lond). Adam was a wool-exporter (1327 Plea 21), a repr. of Tower in 1339 (ib. 118) and executor of his brother John (1335-6 Cl). Hurel is an old surname in England: Gilbert Hurel t. Hy 2 DC 400 (Li), Stephen Hurel 1230 P (Nf). - F Hurel sn, according to Dauzat, is a nickname of a person with bristly or shaggy hair.

Richard had a controversy with Godwin le Cordewaner [Langb 71], who had entrusted an apprentice to him (1317 Cl). If Godwin was a cordwainer, Richard will have been one too. - Messing Ess.
  • 52. Probably a shipwright connected with Richard de Stone de Petiwales (1348-9 Will) and William Atte Stone, shipwright 1348-9 CW 602 (a tenant in Petite Wales, All Hallows Barking). Roger atte Stone, cornmonger, (1349-50 LBF 201) seems to have been of Bill.

  • 56. Martin le Palmere 1324, 1336 Cor 91, 177 (of Tower), 1332 S (2s. 8d.), M. Palmere, shipwright 1344 Will (a tenant in Petit Wales). He owned a boat (batellus) and two small cokets, one under work. Coket is F coquet 'a river boat'. Cf. no. 55.

  • 63. Henry de Combemartyn 1328 LBE 233 (warden of woolmongers), 1332 S (8 m.), H. Combemartyn 1340 Plea 125. A sheriff 1328-9, alderman of Aldg 1327-34, of Tower 1335-8. He is identical with Henry, kinsman and legatee of William de Combemartyn (1318 Will). William was alderman of Tower 1304-18. - Combe Martin D.
  • 64. Not found under Langb. He may be Bernard Pouche of Canterbury 1329 Fine (collector of customs in Sandwich), B. de Pouches of Florence, attorney of John de Florencia, king's clerk 1330 Cl, B. Pouche of Lumbardia 1343 Cl (a wool-exporter). He will have belonged to the society of Pulci or Pouche of Florence, often mentioned in London records (e.g. 1284 LBA 159, Mayors, passim).
  • 65. Richard Conceden of Sandwich, master of the ship the Marie of Westminster 1309-10, 1312 Pat, R. Comsedieu 1332 S (2s.), 1339 Cor 245, R. Conseden (Concedien, Consedien) 1336 f. Cor 177 ff. (St. Dunstan). - Perhaps OF comencer (ME comsen) 'to begin' and F dieu: 'may God begin it'.
  • 66. Possibly Thomas, brother of John atte Rose, whose widow Matilda atte Vine founded a chantry in St. Edmund (Langb) for her husband and Thomas (1338 Pat). Matilda's will was enrolled in 1349. - Surname apparently from a house called The Rose.
  • 67. Roger de Frowick, goldsmith 1292 LBA 143, R. de Frowyk 1305 Pat (goldsmith's work done for the King), 1328 Will (goldsmith, principal house in St. Olave), probably 1307 S (moneyer). Alderman of Langb 1312- 24. There were several early goldsmiths in London with this surname. Roger was no doubt a son of Henry de Frowyk (1286 Will).   • 70. Christina le Minour 1317-18 CW 274 (got a tenement in All Hallows Barking), C. la Minour n.d. HMC 9th Rep 1 b (a tenant in Seething Lane, All Hallows), Christiana, relict of John, late moneyer of London ib. John le Mynour in the roll was very likely a son of Christina, and perhaps a moneyer or a goldsmith. - ME minour 'a miner'. John le Minour (will enrolled in 1275) was a sheriff in 1255-6 and alderman of Cheap c. 1248 ff.

  • 73. Henry atte Cros 1321 Cl (witness St. Dunstan), H. Cros 1332 S (2 m.), 1337 LBF 2 (warden of London Bridge), 1348 (1349) Will (of St. Dunstan). One of his executors was a fishmonger, and he may have been one himself. He may be identical with Henry Cros, fishmonger 1299-1300 Mayors 63, 1301 LBB 112. - Cf. 1292 S [Bridge 43].
  • 74. Adam Hunteman 1302 LBC 113, 1320 LBE 127, 1333 Will (a tenant in All Hallows Barking), A. Honteman 1305 Mayors 220, 1311 LBD 17 (executor of Peter de Blakeneye, woolmonger and sheriff). He was an elector for the Tron in 1302, and thus probably a woolmonger or draper. - Hunteman apparently 'huntsman'.
  • 75. Edmund, son of John de Stratteford 1310 LBD 231 (arrested for debt, Gilbert le Hurer [no. 36] surety). John de Stratford was a hurer (1312 LBD 168). Custance de Stratford, widow of John (1327 Will), mentions Edmund her son. - Stratford (common).
