Warda de Byllyngesgate, Billingsgate ward.

Parishes. See p. 193.

Alderman: Robert de Kelleseye [CripI 3].

The upper part of the membrane is badly damaged by damp, and items 1-24 are partly illegible or difficult to decipher. The readings in the reprint are those given by the officers of the Public Record Office after an examination of the manuscript. In most cases the readings of the editor, based on the photostat, have been confirmed, but the surnames of nos. 2, 11, 15, 16 and 21, and the font-name of no. 6, most of which are illegible in the photostat, have been supplied from the original. Not all the readings are absolutely certain.

Footnotes

  • 1. Simon de Abindone, draper 1309-10 LBD 46, S. de Abyndon 1316 Pat (wool-exporter), 1322 Will (a tenant in St. Mary at Hill and St. Leonard). He was a sheriff 1319-20, and alderman of Tower 1318-22. He may have been a brother of Stephen [Dowg 1]. - Abingdon Brk.
  • 2. Robert Greggori n.d. HMC 9th Rep 2 b (party to a deed referring to St. Andrew; wife Kastania), R. Gregori 1327 LBE 278, 1336 Cor 175 (juror Cand), 1342 LBF 257 (lyndraper), 1346 ib. 146. His wife was the widow of Ralph de Wincestre [1292 S, Bill 60].
  • 3. John Chaundeler 1323 Cor 78 (surety Bill), J. de Baldok, chaundeler 1332 S (16d.), J. Baldok 1339 Cor 244 (surety Bill). - Baldock Hrt.
  • 4. John de Warefeld 1309-10 LBD 45 (baker, adm. Bill), 1332 S (1 m.), J. de Warefeld 1328 LBE 233 (warden of cornmongers), J. de Warefeld 1348 (1349) Will (owner of a house and wharf in St. Mary at Hill). - Warfield Brk.
  • 5. Probably John, son of Roger de Mertone de Wrytle (1317 Will), who had tenements in St. Mary at Hill and St. James, Vi. Perhaps a cheesemonger like William de Writele, who was a surety in St. Mary at Hill in 1315 (LBE 22). - Merton, Marton (common).
  • 6. Henry atte Wode, fishmonger, appr. of John Alayn, adm. 1311 LBD 150, very likely Henry Aleyn 1338 Cor 202 (surety Bill).
  • 7. Richard, son of Richard le Mattere de Lomehethe, appr. of John de Chelchehte, fishmonger, adm. Bridge 1310 LBD 123, R. de Lomhethe 1320 LBE 137, R. de Lamhuthe 1328 LBE 232 (warden of fishmongers), R. de Lamhuth 1332 S (5s. 4d.), R. de Lambhethe 1349 Will (of St. Andrew). - Lambeth Sr.
  • 8. Sutton (common).
  • 9. John Fresfihs 1301 CW 153, J. Fresfish, fishmonger 1313 LBA 185, J. Freshfissh 1331 LBE 253 (a tenant in St. Margaret Fish St Hill). The will of Alice his widow was enrolled in 1333-4. Perhaps John, son of Adam Fresfys (1307 Will). - The surname may mean <<one who sells fresh fish>>.
  • 11. Cf. Walter Gayspore 1327 LBE 278 (juror in All Hallows Barking with no. 2). Gayspur Lane in CripI (Gaysporelane 1332 CW 386) was no doubt named from a person with this surname, which seems to mean <<bright (showy) spur>>, <<with showy spurs>>.
  • 12. Mandeville is an old Norman family name.
  • 13. Adam de Kyngestone, pesshoner, appr. of Adam de Foleham, adm. 1311 LBD 152, A. de Kyngestone, fishmonger 1343 LBF 96, 1348 (1349) Will (of St. Andrew). - Kingston, probably Sr.
  • 14. William de Wynton', laner 1310 LBD 293, W. de Wyncestre 1320 LBE 126 (witness Bill), W. de Wynton, woolmonger 1324 Will (a tenant in St. Andrew). No doubt connected with William and Ralph 1292 S [Bill 5, 60].
  • 15. Henry le Gaunter 1322 LBE 174 (witness St. Mary at Hill). The surname was possibly Godeloue, not found elsewhere. If the correct reading is Godeleue, which seems possible, the surname may be Godeleve, a woman's name, found so late as 1343 and 1349 (see ELPN 39 f.).
  • 16. Gyle is hardly miswritten for Gylle. If the G was as in gibe, the surname may be Gile fn, a side-form of Giles. If the G was hard, a nickname from guile 'trick' (ME gile) may be suggested.
  • 18. John Joye 1321 Cl (merchant), 1332 S (1 m.), 1338, 1343 Cl (woolexporter), 1346 (1347) Will (woolmonger, a tenant in St. Margaret Pattens), J. Joye the elder, woollen draper 1338 Cl. - Cf. CripI 17.
  • 19. Robert le Ropere 1327 Plea 27 (merchant), 1332 S (8s.), 1338 LBF 23 (repr. Bill), 1346 ib. 146. A ship of his was seized in France in 1327.
  • 20. Lat. faber 'smith'.
  • 21. The surname Man has not been otherwise noted in London, apart from an instance of 1141 (ELPN 158), John Man, cutler 1345 Plea 218, and Henry le Man 1298 LBB 80 (not a Londoner).
  • 22. Stephen le Wodeberere 1338 Cor 202 (surety Bill).
  • 23. See 1292 S [Bill 7].
  • 24. See John le torney 1292 S [Bill 27].
  • 25. William de Croydon, fishmonger 1319 LBE 107 (a tenant in St. Botolph). - Croydon Sr.
  • 26. Thomas de Braynforde 1320-1 QW 468 (juror), Th. de Braynford 1332 S (8s.), Th. de Brayneford, fishmonger 1342 (1342-3) Will (owner of a tenement opposite the church of St. Magnus). - Brentford Mx.
  • 27. Alan Gille de Somerletone, blader, adm. 1309-10 LBD 48, A. Gille 1322 LBE 174 (witness St. Mary at Hill), 1328 ib. 233 (warden of cornmongers), 1332 S (66s. 8d.), 1353 Will (a tenant in St. Mary at Hill). - Somerleyton or Somerton Sf. Gille fn; cf. Aldg 18.
  • 28. Adam Ballard 1299-1300, 1305-6 Mayors 63, 245, 1311-12 LBD 84 (cornmonger, adm.). - Cf. Cornhill 33.
  • 29. Laver Ess.
  • 30. Perhaps John le Long, butcher 1310 LBD 293 (witness St. Margaret and St. Leonard, Bill). But perhaps more likely John de Croydon, called le Long, cornmonger, adm. 1311-12 LBD 84 (next after no. 28).
  • 31. John de Lesne, tailor, adm. Bill 1309-10 LBD 49. - Lessness K.
  • 32. Richard de Farmberwe, fishmonger 1305-6 Mayors 233. - Cf. Cheap 100.
  • 33. Very likely the husband of Mary Deumars (1329 Will). She had a tenement in St. Margaret Fish St Hill. - Cf. 1292 S [Dowg 15].
  • 34. Alan Aunore (sic), fishmonger 1290 Pat, A. Annore 1309-10 LBD 105, 1327 Plea 27 (fishmonger). - Annora fn.
  • 35. Probably connected with Robert de Wandlesworth 1301 Cor 16 (St. Andrew), Roger de Wandlesworth ib. (surety of Robert), 1316 Cl (an earlier tenant in St. Margaret Pattens). - Wandsworth Sr.
  • 36. Cf. 1292 S [BroadSt 23].
  • 37. Hugh the tailor 1322 LBE 174 (witness St. Mary at Hill), H. Curteis, tailor 1324 ib. 197 (a tenant in St. Margaret Pattens), H. Curteys, Taillour 1332 S (1 m.), H. Curteys, tailor 1334 (1335) Will (a tenant in St. Margaret Pattens).
  • 38. See 1292 S [Bill 51].
  • 39. Cf. Thomas de Perindone 1292 S [Bill 17].
  • 40. Surname illegible. There is a hole in the skin. The final -rc may be a relic of Clerc.
  • 41. No John Horn(e) of Bill has been met with.
  • 42. Richard Osard 1318 LBE 93, R. Oserd, fishmonger 1321 Will (owner of a shop in St. Magnus). The surname looks like an OE Osheard fn, which is unrecorded. OE Osgeard and Osweard occur.
  • 44. Robert Yvri (sic), fishmonger 1299-1300 Mayors 63, R. Youn 1306 LBB 178, 1321 Will (fishmonger, owner of tenements in St. Andrew and St. Botolph). Cf. Thomas Hivn 1292 S [Bridge 67].
  • 45. Possibly identical with John de Mockyng de Somersete, a fishmonger of St. Magnus (1347 Will), referred to under that name, e.g. 1312 LBB 45. He is usually called J. de Mockynge in later sources, as 1328 LBE 232 (warden of fishmongers). He was a sheriff 1331-2, alderman of Cand 1336- 7, of Bridge 1338-47.
  • 46. Wymund (Wymond) Brother 1307 LBC 153 (elected weigher of the Tron), 1309-10 LBB 229, 1326 Will (woolmonger, owner of houses and shops in St. Botolph). Cf. John Brother senior 1292 S [Bill 36]. Wymond had a sister Isabella Brother, whose will was enrolled in 1316. John Brother's wife was also called Isabella. If the testatrix of 1316 was the widow of John and not a daughter of his, Wymond was probably a brother-in-law and apprentice of John and took his surname.
  • 47. Paulin Turk, fishmonger 1320-1 Cl, 1325 Will. John his son apparently had house in St. Clement and St. Botolph (1334-5 LBE 295). - Cf. 1292 S [Bill 4].
  • 48. Simon de Canterbury, carpenter 1308 LBC 165, Master S. de Caunterbire, carpenter 1313 LBE 21 (contracted to build a house in St. Mary at Hill), S. de Cantuar', carpenter 1332 S (8s.), S. de Canterbury 1340 (1341) Will.
  • 49. Thomas de Canefeld 1309-10 LBD 111 (butcher Bill), 1329-30 LBE 279 (juror Eastcheap). - Canfield Ess. Cf. Cand 8.
  • 50. John Sterre 1304-5 LBC 196, 1319-20 LBE 116 (fishmonger), 1324 ib. 192 (witness Bill). He was a warden of London Bridge 1320 ff. (LBE 144, etc.). - Cf. Bridge 31.
  • 51. John Cros 1290 Lib Alb 384 (warden of fishmongers), 1312 LBB 44 (fishmonger), 1332 S (2s.), 1333 (1333-4) Will (fishmonger, of St. George). Cf. 1292 S [Bill 40].
  • 52. Richard de Coptone, appr. of William de Hakeneye, woolmonger, adm. Bill 1310 LBD 117 (but cf. no. 54), R. de Hakeneye 1312-13 LBE 20 (woolman), 1337 Ep Reg (woolmonger, patron of St. Mary at Hill), 1341 Cl (woollen draper), 1343 Will (of St. Mary at Hill). He was a sheriff 1321-2, alderman of Bill 1322-43, an M.P. in 1336. - Copton K, Hackney Mx.
  • 53. Richard Swote 1299-1300 Mayors 63 (fishmonger), 1313 LBA 185 (id.), 1325-6 Will (owner of houses in St. Margaret Fish St Hill and at East Yarmouth). - Cf. 1292 S [Bill 11].
  • 54. Simon de Hakeneye 1309-10 LBB 231, 1316 CW 261 (nephew and legatee of William le Fullere, woolman), 1322 Will (of St. Mary at Hill). He was indicted with illegal export of wool and had as mainpernor Richard de Hakenay Wymondesbrother (1320 Cl). If Wymondes- is an error for Symondes-, Simon may have been a brother of Richard [no. 52], in which case the latter is hardly identical with Richard de Coptone of 1310. For earlier woolmongers with this surname cf. Osbert de Hakeneye 1293-4 Will (of Bill) and William 1292 S (Qu 48).
  • 55. John Saleman 1306 ADB 2045 (a son of Salomon Burghard), 1307 LBC 157 (fishmonger), 1328 LBE 232 (warden of fishmongers), 1331 Cl (fisherman). Cf. Salaman Burward 1292 S [Bridge 41]. A brother of John is called Ralph Burghard 1321 Lib Cust 409 f.
  • 56. John de Wrotham 1322 LBE 174 (witness St. Mary at Hill), 1328 ib. 233 (warden of cornmongers), 1332 S (4s. 8d.), 1334 Plea 89 (ship of his laden with corn seized off Flushing), 1339 ib. 118 (repr. Bill). - Wrotham K.
  • 57. John de la Barre 1308 f. LBC 162, 166, 1310 LBD 235 (farmer of murage), 1322 LBE 167 (meter at Billingsgate), 1323 Cor 78 (St. Botolph), J. atte Barre 1310 LBD 241 (sworn to keep the gate of Billingsgate). Probably a cornmonger. The surname means <<at the bar>>.
