He was a sheriff 1310-11 and alderman of Cordw 1313-21. An earlier bearer of the surname was Robert Corp LBA 1 (corrector of wine). Bardsley mentions Stephen de Corp 1275 RH (Li). - Corp might be ON korpr 'raven', a by-name as in Corpusty Nf, while de Corp might be a name of foreign origin.
  • 2. Hugh de Gartone 1309-10 LBD 217 (mercer), 1327 Will. He was a sheriff 1313-14 and alderman of ColemSt 1319-27. He was apparently connected with William de Garton senior (1298 LBB 83, 1312 ib. 52), since he remembered the widow of William in his will. - Garton YE.

John of the Chamber, clerk 1294 LBB 57, 1298-9 Mayors 46 (clerk of the Commonalty), J. de la Chaumbre 1307 LBC 179 (clerk of sheriff), J. de la Chambre 1327 Will (resident in Holy Trinity the Less). He acted as pleader in various suits for the Commonalty and was alderman of Cand from 1314 till 1319-20. The surname will allude to his official position at the Chamber of the Guildhall.
  • 4. Juliana Hauteyn, wife of Thomas Romeyn 1303-4 CW 161. She was dead before 1332 (CW 385). On Thomas Romeyn see 1292 S [Cordw 28]. She is mentioned as the wife of Thomas Romeyn as early as 1287-8 LBA 169. - Cf. 1292 S [CripI 28].
  • 5. Gilbert Pavy 1322 Cor 57 (St. Michael, Qu), 1328 Plea 62 (merchant, probably a cornmonger), G. Pany 1332 S [Qu, 2 m.], 1335-6 LBF 7, G. Pavy 1345 (1346) Will (a tenant in St. James, Vi). - Pavy (Pavia), a woman's name.
  • 6. Ralph le Balauncer 1308 LBB 204 (pepperer), 1316 Mem 120 (pepperer of Soper Lane), 1320 Will (apparently of St. Mary le Bow). He was a sheriff 1316-17. The surname means 'weigher, keeper of the Balance', but there is no information of Ralph having held that office. He may be identical with Ralph de Arraz, to whom the Small Beam (or Balance) was delivered in 1299 -1300 (LBC 56) and who was a juror in St. Antholin in 1311 (LBD 190). There is no proof that Ralph de Arraz was a pepperer, but William de Arraz, pepperer, is mentioned 1287-8 LBA 107.
  • 7. Walter de Gorst, appr. of William Walram [1292 S, Cordw 12], adm. 1311 LBD 157, W. Gorst 1319 LBE 107, W. le Grorst (sic), Spicer 1319 QW 458. - Probably a local surname from a place called Gorst (OE gorst 'gorse'), e.g. Gosses Fm in W. Hoathly Sx or The Gorse in Sanderstead Sr.
  • 8. John le Mareschal 1319-20 LBE 117 (witness with no. 7). Doubtless identical with John le Mareschall junior 1326 Cor 156 (juror Walbr), J. le Marescal de Straham, oriundus de Bernyngham, citizen of London, residing in the parish of St. John upon Walbrok 1327 Will. Cf. John le Mareshal 1292 S [Walbr 53]. John junior was very likely an apprentice of John senior and adopted his double surname (le Marescal de Straham), though he came from Barningham (Nf or Sf). He may have been a skinner. St. John Walbrook is partly in Cordw.
  • 9. Copham must be the name of a lost place.

  • 47. Reymond, son of Reymond de Burdeux 1315 CW 253, Reymund de Burdeux 1322 LBD 185, 1332 S (2s. 8d.), 1341 LBF 65 (witness St. Antholin). His father was a saddler and dead before 1309 (1298 LBB 79, Misc), and his sister was the wife of Simon Corp [no. 1]; see CW 253. Reymund junior may have been a saddler like his father, but he may have become a pepperer like his brother-in-law. - Bordeaux.

The last three instances no doubt refer to the shearman, who may well be the taxpayer of 1319. But it is possible there was an Adam atte Bowe, pepperer; cf. John de Arcubus, pepperer 1292 S [Cordw 40].

A grandson of Walter de Bredstrate [1292 S, Cordw 32], who left shops in All Hallows to John son of William his son. John was a merchant, perhaps a cornmonger.
