Footnotes

  • 1. Lat pistor 'baker'. Cf. Bas 19.
  • 2. John de Redbourne (Rodbourne), poulterer 1305 f. Mayors 231, 246. - Redbourn Hrt, Redbourne Li, Rodbourne W.
  • 4. Simon le Barber 1332 S (1 m.), S. de St. Alban, barber 1332 (1332-3) Will (of St. Stephen). - St. Albans Hrt.
  • 5. Adam Attecherch, batour 1299-1300 Mayors 65, A. atte Chirche 1318 LBE 92 (juror ColemSt).
  • 6. Caterham Sr.
  • 7. More (sic) Kelendrer 1332 S (6s. 8d.), perhaps Mone le Lumbard 1305 Mayors 242. Mone is evidently a Lombard name (cf. OG Muno). Robert Mone 1339 Cor 242 (a juror in BroadSt with John Pelle; cf. Bish 11) may have been connected with Mone le Kalendrer. - Cf. Appendix.
  • 8. John le Chaundeler de Colemanestrate (Colmanstret) 1301 LBB 109, 1310-11 ib. 18, 1312 ib. 50 (apparently deceased, John his son mentioned). The taxpayer of 1319 will be John junior. Cf. no. 51.
  • 9. Mortagne in Orne, etc. or Mortain in La Manche (France).
  • 10. Walter Sprot 1318 LBE 92 (witness ColemSt). Probably a >batour< like Richard Sprot, son of William Sprot (1332 LBE 286, a tenant in ColemSt). - Cf. 1292 S [Bas 2].
  • 11. Walter du (de) Boys, batour 1312 LBD 90 (adm.), 1312 LBB 45. - Cf. Cand 22.

  • 13. ME latoner 'a worker in latten' (ME latoun, OF laton 'latten').
  • 14. Clere apparently for de Clere. - Clere Ha. Willelmo is written above Johanne, which was cancelled.
  • 15. Anabilia, widow of Walter Grapefige, whose will was enrolled in May 1319. Walter Gratefige was a witness in ColemSt in 1318 (LBE 92). William Gratefige, his father, was a representative of ColemSt in 1285-6 (LBA 210). An earlier William Grapefige (or Gratefige) was a sheriff in 1257-8 and was killed at Lewes in 1264 (1270 Pat). The surname, which shows curious interchange of Grape- and Gratefige, is obscure. The occupations of the bearers of the surname are not stated.
  • 16. Cristina Caps 1332 S (4s.). - Cappes may be the genitive of Cappe sn [Langb 28] or the plural of ME cappe 'cap' (<<Cristina with the caps>>?).
  • 17. Thomas de Wykham 1318 LBE 92 (witness ColemSt), 1321 (1322) Will (of St. Stephen). He is called zonarius (girdler) in the copy of the will in BM II. - Wickham Hrt, Ess, K, Sf, etc.
  • 18. Evidently connected with no. 17 and a girdler.
  • 19. Philip Gentil 1331 LBE 261, 1332 S (5s. 4d.), Ph. Gentil senior, felmonger 1346 Will (of St. Stephen). He mentions Adam his father and Alice his wife, daughter of Richard Ussher [FarrE 103]. - ME, OF gentil 'gentle'.
  • 20. Wrenghere might be identical in meaning with wiredrawer.
  • 21. Codham Ess.
  • 22. Hugh de Berkhamsted 1326 (1328) Will (of St. Stephen). Very likely a batour like William de Berkhamstede [Cheap 60]. - Berkhamstead Hrt.
  • 23. Warin de Hodesdon 1332 S (8s.), 1338 (1340) Will (owner of a tenement opposite London Wall, doubtless in St. Stephen). - Hoddesdon Hrt.

  • 34. Cf. Richard Fruiter 1332 S [ColemSt, 8d.].
  • 35. William Pope 1327 Mem 164, 1332 S (4s.), 1332 LBE 286 (witness ColemSt). - 'The pope', a nickname.
  • 37. Garlander 'a marker of garlands'. A garland was a metal chaplet or circlet for the head. See OED and Mem 133.

He was imprisoned by Richer de Refham, Mayor, in 1311; this action is stated in Ann Lond to have been the cause of Richer being deposed from the Mayoralty. Cf. Cheap 131. - Hackford Nf.
