  • 1. Geoffrey Haukeseye 1330 CW 359. A chantry for him was founded by John Bigge, potter [1319 S, Ports 11]. Hardly identical with G. Hauekesheye, baker 1282 LBA 121 (drawn on the hurdle). The surname, which means hawk's eye', is recorded in Essex in the 13th cent. (William Hauekeseye 1237-45 Colchester 608).

  • 16. Cf. Walter Cope senior [no. 22]. Walter senior is W. Cope 1275 RH 414 (juror Ports), 1294-5 Will (of St. Botolph). W. junior is W. Cope, tiler 1304 LBB 138. Both were doubtless tilers. - ME cope 'a long cope or cape'.
  • 17. John le Pottere 1275 RH 414 (juror Ports), 1304 LBB 138 (with no. 14), J. le Potter 1297 LBB 238 (repr. Ports), J. de Algate, potter 1307-8 (see no. 14). He may be the John le Poter who in 1288 made a new laundry in the Abbey of Ramsey (LBA 172).
  • 18. Edmund Trentemars 1281 LBB 8, 1285-6 LBA 210 (repr. Ports), 1302 LBC 131 (executor of W. de Lewes [Bridge 1]), 1303 Mem 49 (7s. 6d. arrears of tallage), 1308 LBC 168 (a landholder in Stepney). He claimed a messuage in the suburb of London, formerly held by one Walter, his ancestor (1281 Selden 55). The latter may be Walter Trentemars 1260-5 ADA 2916 (a tenant in Stepney). Edmund's occupation is never stated. - OF trente marcs '30 marks'. Cf. Deumars [Dowg 15].

  • 20. A nickname from ME heved 'head', perhaps in the sense 'chief, head man'. Cf. Roger Heved 1299-1300 Mayors 62.
  • 21. One John de Stevehach was part owner of a tenement in FarrE in 1300 (CW 146). Cf. Richard de Stevenache 1283-4 LBA 81, R. de Stevenath, butcher 1299-1300 Mayors 65. - Stevenage Hrt.
