The site seems to have been formerly occupied by Bell Alley. mentioned in Lond. I. p.m. 1557, as having gardens and a fountain or well (II. p. 31 and ib. 148). Bell Alley is shown in O. and M. 1677, and Strype, 1720.

The site is now occupied by the railway lines of the Great Eastern and North London Railways, and Sun Street is entirely outside the City boundary in the boroughs of Finsbury and Shoreditch,

Part of the street existed at the back of No.144 Bishopsgate Jan., 1911, and the name of the street is said to be derived from the Sun Tavern there (N. and Q. 11th S. III. p. 3).
