Site has been rebuilt and is now occupied by offices, etc.

Harp Court, Alley, Yard

In Black Horse Alley, Fleet Street, at its northern end, in Farringdon Ward Without (P.C. 1732-Elmes, 1831).

Lockie says it communicated with Fleet Market.

"Hart Court" in O. and M. 1677.

Described on a tradesman's token issued 1649-72 as "Harpe Alley end at Ditch side" (Burn, 98).

Harp Lane

South out of Great Tower Street to Lower Thames Street (P.O. Directory). In Tower Ward.

Earliest mention : "Harpe Lane," 34 H. VIII. 1543 (L. and P. H. VIII. XVIII. Pt. 1, p. 129).

Other name : "Hart lane" (S.135).

"Hart lane," called at first "Harp Lane," 1657 (Howel, p. 49,).

There was a messuage with a garden in the parish of St. Dunstan in the East in Tower Street in 1543 called "le Harpe" adjoining Harpe lane, giving name to the lane.

It is interesting to note that there is now at No. 13 a public house called the "Harp," which might conceivably be on the site of part of the garden of this messuage see L. and P. H. VIII. D.S. Vol. XVIII. Pt. 1, p. 129).

Harpoon (The)

Messuage in East Smithfield in parish of St. Botolph without Aldgate, 1567. Left by Ralph Carter for poor of parishes of All Hallows, Lombard Street and St. Andrew Undershaft.

Let to Messrs. Goodwyn, brewers, 1778 (End. Ch. All Hallows, etc., p. 2).

No later mention.

Harrow Alley

West out of Aldersgate Street, in Aldersgate Ward Without (O. and M. 1677-Strype, 1755).

Seems to be called "Magpye Alley" in Rocque and "Magpie Court" (q.v.) in Horwood.

Probably named after the sign.

Harrow Alley

North out of Fleet Lane, in Farringdon Ward Without (O. and M. 1677-Boyle, 1799).

Called : "Harrow Corner" in P.C. 1732, and Boyle.

Site now covered by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway lines.

Harrow Alley, Aldgate High Street

South out of Aldgate High Street at No. 60. In Portsoken Ward (P.O. Directory).

Earliest mention : O. and M. 1677.

At that time and for some years later it contained two large courts and a long alley leading into Goodman's Fields.

In Rocque's map, 1746, these courts are called "My Lady's Yard," and "Cart Yard," but in the other maps they seem to form part of Harrow Alley.

Altered and rebuilt in the 18th century, and again in the 19th for the formation of Somerset Street.

Former name : "Coleman's Yard" (O. and M. 1677).

Site seems to have been rebuilt in the latter part of the 18th century.

John Barton and Agnes his wife are mentioned by Stow as great benefactors to the Church of St. Michael, Bassishaw (S. 291), so probably the family had property in the neighbourhood.
