Abstract

The cause and result of Woodward's complaint against Chute, lately high sheriff of Kent, remains unknown as only an undated note from Dr Duck survives indicating that he wished to consult the Earl Marshal before process was granted to Woodward.

'If any desire a process out of court for Mr Woodward against Edward Chute, esq., late high sheriff of Kent, I desire to be acquainted itt before the process goe out that I may attende my L. Marshall about itt.'

Notes

The plaintiff may have been Edward Woodward of Ashford, co. Kent, who married Elizabeth, daughter of John Roberts. Their son, another Edward Woodward of Ashford (b. 1606) married Anne, daughter of Herbert Hay of Glinebourne, co. Sussex.

Edward Chute, esq, was the son of George Chute of Bethersden, Kent. He married Lydia, daughter of Thomas Gibbon of Bethersden. Their second son Edward was born before 1619.
