Abstract
The cause and result of Quarles' complaint against Nightingale remain unknown as the plaintiff's bond dated 19 September 1640 survives.

Bond 'to appear in Arundell House in the Strand without Temple Barr or in the Painted Chamber in the Palace of Westminster if the court be kept there'.

James Quarles was the eldest son of Sir Robert Quarles of Romford, co. Essex, knt, and Hester, daughter of Sir Edward Lewknor of Denham, co. Suffolk. He was aged about 30 in 1634 and he married Anne, daughter of a Mordaunt of Hempstead, co. Essex.

William Nightingale of Walden the younger appeared in the Visitation of 1634 as the son of William Nightingale of Saffron Walden and of Furnivalls Inn the elder and Anne, daughter of Richard Ipps of Saffron Walden. The younger Nightingale married Elizabeth, daughter of Edward Ingrey of Shepreth, co. Cambridge, and was a first cousin of Sir Thomas Nightingale of Newport, co. Essex, bart.
