137 COXE V ALLEN

Cause of office promoted by John Coxe v Strode Allen of Evershot, co. Dorset, gent

January - April 1637

Abstract

This was a cause of office promoted by Coxe, the Earl Marshal's messenger, charging Allen with contempt. In what may be a connected case, during May 1635 Allen had petitioned the court to dismiss a suit brought against him by Sir Richard Strode [see cause 631] on the grounds that it was vexatious. Proceedings survive in this case from January - April 1637 and were linked to a Star Chamber case brought by Strode; but there is no indication of sentence.

Summary of proceedings

Dr Duck was counsel in this cause of contempt, and on 28 January 1637 he delivered a petition to which Allen was to respond. On 16 February 1637 Star Chamber was mentioned, as well as the hearing of a verdict. Allen was to respond at the next sitting. On 29 April Star Chamber was mentioned again, and Allen was warned to appear to hear the verdict.
