107 CLARKE V PALMER
Sir Simon Clarke of Salford Priors, co. Warwick, bart v Edward Palmer of Bidford-upon-Avon
June - November 1636
Abstract
Clarke complained that Palmer had given him scandalous words. The case came before the court in June and November 1636; but no indication of sentence survives.
Summary of proceedings
Dr Duck was counsel. The cause came before Sir Henry Marten on 3 June 1636 and there were further proceedings on 8 November 1636.
Notes
Sir Simon Clarke of Bidford-on-Avon, Salford Priors and Newbold Revel, co. Warwick, esq, knt and bart (1579-1651), was the son of Walter Clarke and Elizabeth, daughter of Simon Edolph of co. Kent. His first wife died in 1617, and his second wife was Dorothy, widow of Thomas Hay, and daughter of Thomas Hobson of Cambridge. Their son and heir was Sir John Clarke (1605-1680). Although a newcomer to Warwickshire, he served as high sheriff in 1633 and was a keen supporter of Sir William Dugdale's antiquarian interests. By the outbreak of civil war, Sir Simon Clarke had debts of £1500. This was three times his annual income, forcing him to mortgage many of his estates. Edward Palmer of Bidford may have been Edward Palmer (b.1603), second son of Henry Palmer of Milverton, co. Warwick and Elizabeth, daughter of George Averell of Solihull, co. Warwick.
