Footnotes

  • 1. Should be 1573. The greater part of their first year of office was in 1574, and the scribe has given that date to the whole of it.
  • 2. Similarly in 1593–4 a balance was, by order of the Vestry (Minutes, vol. 1, f. 36), paid over to the Churchwardens, cf. p. 366.
  • 3. The Token money, a survival of Pre-Reformation usage, was quite distinct from the Easter Collections or other receipts from Communions. From this year the Communion collections are recorded in the Rate Books, cf. note, p. 101.
  • 4. 1573–4.
  • 5. qy. "ewery" in the royal household.
  • 6. The rate books contain numerous entries of expenses on his behalf. He was found wounded in Long Acre. Straw was bought for his bed; Goodwife Bellowes tended him and "made hym an Alebury" (boiling ale, spiced and sugared, with sops of bread in it.—Halliwell), and provided "butter to suppell his head." The Collectors "boughte on matt, one mattress, one bolster of ffeathers and one pillow of fethers and one paier of sheets to have in store for the like nede at all tymes; wch cost. ixs."
  • 7. qy. Bonveire, cf. 28th Dec. (p. 278).

  • 13. 1574–5.
  • 14. Swyngles (R.)
  • 15. Shuttleworth (R.) p Plague victims. The Register gives nearly 140 names; subtracting the 43 specified as 'peste' the remainder is still about 30 above the average. It is unfortunate that the Rate books are missing from April 1575 to Feb. 1576/7.
  • 16. Malefactor: executus Tyburnia (R.)
  • 17. Ivy bridge.
  • 18. No note of this kind in Register, possibly some confusion between Agnes and Robert, vide n. I.

  • 35. vide n. 2, p. 273.
  • 36. In the MS. Minutes of the Vestry (f. Io) is a record that the churchwardens in obedience "to open proclamacon made, and by vertue of the Queenes Matie l'res pattents" collected 38s. 9d. for Colliton Haven in Devon. In 1577, 17s. 5d. was gathered for the same use, and 6s. 10d. was paid in 1581.
