Editorial note

In the catalogue of counties, there may be instances where county boundary changes mean that a place is here given as being in one county which has subsequently become part of another. In these cases, it is suggested that users consult the alphabetical catalogue of places.

In the place catalogue place names have as far as possible been standardised. Thus a reference to "Hull" in the Description is given as Kingston upon Hull in the catalogue.
