Letter from Nottingham, concerning Colonel Thornhaugh's Success near Newark.
A Letter, directed to the Committee of both Kingdoms, from the Committee of Nottingham, dated 29 Nov. 1644, was read; informing, "That the Colonel "Thornhaugh had beat up a Quarter at Muskam, near Newarke, and taken Eighty Horse, some Colours, and Officers; and desires some Money to supply their Wants, which was formerly promised them."
Message from the Assembly, concerning the Directory for Matrimony.
A Message was brought from the Assembly of Divines, by Mr. Marshall and others; who said, "They were "Ordered by the Assembly to present to then Lordships their Advice concerning Marriage, which is to be Part of (fn. 1) the Directory; and they humbly desire their Lordships to take into Consideration, and make some Law for preventing of the Marriage of Children without the Consent of Parents."
Message to the H. C. about the French Minister's Audience;
A Message was sent to the House of Commons, by Sir Edward Leech and Doctor Aylett:
To deliver to them the Letters from Monsieur Sabran, concerning his Desire of Audience; and to desire that the Committees that were appointed formerly concerning this Business may meet this Afternoon, to consider of them.
and about an Answer to The States Ambassadors.
2. To let them know, That The States Ambassadors have lately desired a Pass from my Lord General, to go to the King; with a Purpose, as they intimated unto his Lordship, not to return again hither: The Lords think it may sound ill to the World, if they should go away with so much Unsatisfaction as not to receive an Answer unto their Desires; the Lords do therefore desire the Concurrence of the House of Commons unto that Answer, which was prepared by the Committee of both Houses appointed to treat with the said Ambassadors, and hath been agreed unto by their Lordships.
Earl of Suffolk's Cause.
Ordered, That the Committee concerning the Earl of Suffolke's Business shall meet To-morrow in the (fn. 2) Afternoon.
Answers from the H. C.
Mr. Serjeant Whitfield and Mr. Serjeant Fynch returned with this Answer to the Message sent Yesterday to the House of Commons:
That they have appointed a Committee of a proportionable Number, to meet about the Business of Mr. John Griffith, as is desired.
And that they agree in nominating the Persons to be Deputy Lieutenants for the County of Northumb.
Sir Edward Leech and Doctor Aylett return with this Answer to the Message:
That they have appointed their Committee to meet this Afternoon, concerning the French Agent, as is desired; and concerning the Answer to The States Ambassadors, they will take it into Consideration, and return (fn. 3) an Answer by Messengers of their own.
Order for exempting Houses of Peers, &c.
The Order concerning the exempting the Houses of the Peers, Assistants, and Attendants in Parliament, from billeting of Soldiers, was read, and approved of. (Here enter it.)
Ordinance for the Attainder of the Archbishop of Cant.
Next, the House was adjourned into a Committee during Pleasure, to take into Consideration the Ordinance (fn. 1) for the Attainder of the Archbishop of Cant. To that Purpose, their Lordships did consider the Matter of Fact given in Evidence against him at the Trial.
The House was resumed.
And then it was Ordered, That all Books, Writings, Papers, Dockets, and Evidences, concerning the Archbishop of Canterbury's Trial, shall be brought unto the Clerk of this House by Nine of the Clock in the Morning on Friday next; at which (fn. 1) Time, this House will proceed in the Business, and to be the First Business; and all the Lords now present are to attend (fn. 4) the House.
(fn. 5) This is vacated by the Addition of a Proviso afterwards made.
* "For Prevention of such Inconveniencies as may happen to the Peers of this Realm, and to the Members of the Lords House in Parliament, and to the Assistants and Attendants of the said House of Peers, by billeting or quartering of Commanders, Officers, Soldiers, in or upon their Houses:*
Order for exempting the Houses of Peers, &c. from billeting.
It is therefore Ordered, by the Lords assembled in Parliament, That no Commander, Officer, or Soldier, or any of their Servants or Horses, shall be billeted or quartered in or upon any of the Mansion-houses, Jointure-houses, Stables and Out-houses thereunto belonging, of any Peer of this Realm, or Member of the House of Peers, or Assistant or Attendant of the House of Peers; and if any be quartered or billeted contrary to this Order, they shall forthwith remove themselves: And it is Ordered, That all Captains, Quarter-masters, and other Officers and Soldiers of the Army, and all Constables and other Officers, do take Notice of this Order, and do yield a due and ready Obedience thereunto: And it is further Ordered, That it be recommended to his Excellency the Earl of Essex, and all other Commanders, that they do forthwith give Order to all their Commanders, Officers, Quarter-masters, and Soldiers, to take Notice of this Order, and to give a due and ready Obedience thereunto, upon Pain of cashiering: And it is lastly Ordered, That every Lord, and other Person concerned in this Order, may take a Copy of this Order, under the Clerk of the Parliaments Hand, appliable to each of their or any of their Houses."
