Committee to consider of the Manner of receiving the Lords who are come from the King, with an Answer to the Propositions.

The Speaker acquainted the House, "That the Duke of Richmond and the Earl of South'ton were last Night with his Lordship, to let him know, that they were come with an Answer from the King to the Propositions to both Houses; and they desired to know in what Manner they should address themselves."

Hereupon this House Ordered, That a Committee of this House should be appointed to meet, with a proportionable Number of the House of Commons, to consider of the Manner of their Reception, and to report the same to the Houses.

This House nominated these Six Lords following; videlicet,

Lords Leave to visit them.

Ordered, That the Earl of Denbigh, Earl of Stamford, and the Lord Rich, have Leave of this House, to visit the Duke of Richmond and the Earl of Southampton.

Bedingfield, Leave to go beyond Sea.

Ordered, That Mr. Thomas Beding field, now a Prisoner at Lynn, shall hereby have Leave to go beyond the Seas, with his Wife and Family; and the Lord Admiral is appointed to give him a Pass, to transport himself quietly at Sea.

Message to the H. C. for a Committee to meet, about the Manner of receiving the Lords who are come from the King.

A Message was sent to the House of Commons, by Mr. Serjeant Whitfield and Mr. Serjeant Fynch:

To let them know, that their Lordships having Notice, that the Duke of Richmond and the Earl of Southampton have brought to both Houses of Parliament and the Commissioners of Scotland an Answer from His Majesty, to the Propositions for Peace; their Lordships have named a Committee of Six Lords, to meet presently, in the Lord Keeper's Lodgings, to consider of the Manner of their Reception; and do desire that the House of Commons will nominate a proportionable Number, to join with them therein.

Griffith's Petition, to be acquainted with his Charge, and for Counsel, &c.

Upon reading the Petition of John Griffith Esquire; sheweth,

"That, about a Fortnight since, by their Lordships Warrant, he hath been apprehended, and ever since remained in Custody, and hath not so much as the Knowledge of his Accuser or his Charge, though he hath Twice desired the same from the Committee appointed to examine him; therefore he humbly desired, that he may know his Accuser, and his Charge in Writing, and Counsel assigned him to answer the same, and in the mean Time to have his Liberty upon Bail."

Hereupon some of the Lords of the Committee that are appointed for the Examination of his Business informed the House, "That the Committee will be speedily ready to report the Business to the Houses:" And therefore this House Ordered, To take this Petition into Consideration To-morrow Morning.

Ordinance for Attainder of the Archbishop of Cant.

Next, the House was adjourned into a Committee during Pleasure, to take into Consideration the Ordinance of Attainder of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The House was resumed.

Answer from the H. C.

Mr. Serjeant Whitfield and Mr. Serjeant Fynch return with this Answer:

That they have appointed a Committee of a proportionable Number of the House of Commons, to meet the Committee of Six Lords presently, as is desired.

Message from thence, about advising with the Scots Commissioners concerning the Lords who are come from the King.

A Message was brought from the House of Commons, by Sir Henry Mildmay Knight:

To let their Lordships know, that they have given their Committee Power to confer and advise with the Scottish Commissioners, about the Manner of the Reception of the Duke of Richmond and the Earl of South'ton, if it shall be needful.

Agreed to.

The Answer returned was:

Answer.

That this House gives Power to their Committees, to confer with the Scotts Commissioners, about the Manner of the Reception of the Duke of Richmond and the Earl of South'ton, if it shall be needful.

Ordered, That this House shall sit this Afternoon, at Five of the Clock.

Message to the H. C. to do so likewise.

A Message was sent to the House of Commons, by Dr. Aylett and Dr. Heath:

To let them know, that this House hath resolved to sit at Five of the Clock this Afternoon; and desire that they would sit likewise, if it may stand with their Conveniency.

Seats to be kept for the Lords in Lincolns Inn Chapel, at the Fast.

Ordered, That the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod shall take Care to provide Seats for Thirty Persons in Lyncolnes Inne Chapel, against Wednesday next; and that he shall not let any Persons come into the Chapel, as are not Members or Assistants of Parliament, but such as he shall have Directions for from some Members of this House.

Manner of receiving the Lords who are come from the King, with an Answer to the Propositions.

The Earl of Northumb. reported, "That the Select Committee of both Houses have considered of the Manner of Reception of the Two Lords that are come from the King; and the Opinion of the Committee is, That a Select Committee of both Houses be appointed, to receive them; and that the Scotts Commissioners be then present: The Place to be in the Painted Chamber; the Time to be To-morrow in the Afternoon, at Four of the Clock; Sir Peter Killegrewe to be sent to wait upon them, to the Place where they are to repose themselves. The Manner of sitting in the Painted Chamber to be thus: The Lords to sit at One Side of the Table, and the Scottish Commissioners on the other Side. The Two Lords that come from the King to sit upon a short Form, at the upper End of the Table. The Committee of the House of Commons to sit upon a Form behind the Lords."

Ordered, That this House approves of the Opinion of the Committee, in all these Particulars.

And these Lords following were appointed to be Committees; videlicet,

Message to the H. C. to appoint One of their House also.

A Message was sent to the House of Commons, by Dr. Aylett and Dr. Heath:

To let them know, "That the Lords have appointed a Select Committee of Fourteen Lords, to receive what the Two Lords sent from His Majesty have to deliver unto the Two Houses and the Commissioners of Scotland; the Place to be the Painted Chamber; the Time To-morrow, at Four of the Clock in the Afternoon; the Commissioners of Scotland to be then present. Sir Peter Killegrewe to be sent, to wait upon them to the Place where they are to repose themselves. The Manner of the Sitting in the Painted Chamber to be as it was resolved by the Committee of both Houses:" And to desire the House of Commons to give their Concurrence herein, and that they would appoint a proportionable (fn. 1) Number of their House.

The Messengers return with this Answer:

Answer.

That the House of Commons concur with this House, in the Manner of the Reception of the Two Lords that come from the King; and have appointed a proportionable Number of their House, as is desired.

Master of the Ceremonies to attend the Lords who are come from the King.

Ordered, That the Speaker of this House shall give Directions to Sir Peter Killegrew, or who else he shall think fit, to let the Duke of Richmond and the Earl of South'ton know, that, the Houses have appointed their Reception To-morrow, in the Afternoon, at Four of the Clock, in the Painted Chamber.

Adjourn.
