Hunter & Campbell v Duff et al.

The joint and separate Answer of Lieutenant General The Honorable Alexander Duff of Leuchars, Richard Wharton Duff Esquire, of Orton, and Major General William Stewart, residing at Elgin, Trustees of the deceased Major George Duff of Milton, to the Petition and Appeal of Archibald Hunter of Upper Baker Street, London, and David Campbell, Writer to the Signet of Edinburgh, his Mandatory, was this Day brought in.

Anderson to enter into a Recogce on White's et al. Appeal.

The House being moved, "That George Brydges Rodney Anderson of the Middle Temple, Esquire, may be permitted to enter into a Recognizance for Richard White, and others, on account of their Appeal depending in this House, they residing in Shropshire:"

The same was agreed to; and Ordered accordingly.

Cuninghame's Petition referred to Judges.

Upon reading the Petition of William Cuninghame Esquire, Heir of Entail in Possession of the Estate of Craigends, in the County of Renfrew, and of Alexander Cuninghame Esquire, his immediate younger Brother, next Heir in Succession under the said Entail; praying Leave to bring in a Bill for the Purpose in the said Petition mentioned:

It is Ordered, That the Consideration of the said Petition be, and is hereby referred to The Lord President of the Court of Session, in Scotland, and Lord Moncreiff, in Scotland, or, in their Absence, or the Absence of either of them, to The Lord Justice Clerk of Scotland, and The Lord Fullerton, in Scotland; and that the said Judges, or any Two of them, are forthwith to summon all Parties before them who may be concerned in the Bill, and, after hearing all the Parties, and perusing the Bill, are to report to the House the State of the Case, with their Opinion thereupon, under their Hands, and are to sign the said Bill.

Agricultural Labourers Employment Bill presented.

The Earl of Shaftesbury presented to the House a Bill, intituled, "An Act for encouraging and facilitating the Employment of Labourers in Agriculture."

The said Bill was read the First Time.

Ordered, That the said Bill be printed.

Emigration, Return respecting, Ordered.

Ordered, That there be laid before this House, "A Return of the Number of Persons who have emigrated from the United Kingdom to North America, the Cape of Good Hope, New South Wales, &c. since the passing of the Act 9 Geo. 4, C. 21."

Reform of Parliament, Petition from Worcestershire respecting.

Upon reading the Petition of the Nobility, Gentry, Clergy and Freeholders of the County of Worcester, whose Names are thereunto subscribed; praying their Lordships "to withhold their Sanction from any Measure hereafter to be submitted to their Lordships which is not essentially founded on the ancient Principles and Practice of the Constitution, and calculated to insure, instead of endangering, the Stability of our Institutions in Church and State; and that, pending the Discussions which must precede the Settlement of that great Question, the Laws for the Maintenance of His Majesty's Crown and Dignity, and for the Security of the Lives and Property of His Majesty's Subjects, may be promptly and impartially administered by the recognized and responsible Authorities of the Realm, rather than by Associations self-constituted for Party Purposes, and whose Existence the Petitioners deem incompatible with the Principles of good Government:"

It is Ordered, That the said Petition do lie on the Table.

Correspondence relative to last Differences at Canton, Motion for, made & withdrawn.

It was moved, "That there be laid before this House, Copies of or Extracts from all Correspondence between the Factory at Canton and the Court of Directors of The East India Company, relative to the last Differences between the Factory and the Authorities at Canton."

Which being objected to;

The said Motion was (by Leave of the House) withdrawn.

Lunatic Commissions Bill presented.

The Lord Chancellor presented to the House a Bill, intituled, "An Act to diminish the Inconvenience and Expence of Commissions in the Nature of Writs De lunatico inquirendo, and to provide for the better Care and Treatment of Idiots, Lunatics and Persons of unsound Mind, found such by Inquisition."

The said Bill was read the First Time.

Ordered, That the said Bill be printed.
