A Petition of the Clergy, Gentry, Freeholders and others, Inhabitants of Devizes and its Vicinity, was presented and read; praying their Lordships "not to delay that Act of National Justice, the Abolition of Slavery, on the Plea of Compensation to the West India Planters, but to proceed immediately to the Adoption of such Measures as shall be deemed most advisable for the speedy and total Extinction of Negro Slavery in all the Dependencies of the British Crown."
