Archbishop of Cant's Counsel.
Upon reading the Petition of Wm. Laude Archbishop of Cant. It is Ordered, That Mr. Richard Gerrard shall be added, to be of Counsel with the said Archbishop.
Message to the H. C. that the Lords are ready to proceed against him.
A Message was sent to the House of Commons, by Sir Rob't Rich and Mr. Page:
To let them know, that this House is ready to proceed against the Archbishop of Cant. upon the Impeachment brought up by them.
The Messengers return with this Answer:
Answer.
That the House of Commons will presently send some Members of their House, to manage the Evidence against the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Members of the House of Commons, that were appointed to manage the Evidence, being come, the Lords commanded the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod to bring the said Archbishop of Canterbury to the Bar, as a Delinquent;
And having kneeled until he was bid by the Speaker to stand up;
Charge against him.
Mr. Serjeant Wylde said, "That the Knights, Citizens, and Burgesses of the House of Commons, in their Names, and in the Names of all the Commons of England, having impeached, by several Articles, Wm. Laude, Archbishop of Canterbury, of High Treason, and High Crimes and Misdemeanors, with a Saving to themselves a Liberty to add new Articles, or amend as they shall see Cause: And the said Archbishop being brought this Day before this House to be tried for his Offences, (fn. 1) they desired that all the several Impeachments against him may be read."
Which accordingly was done.
To put in his Answer.
Then Mr. Serjeant Wylde desired the Answer to these Articles may be read.
But, in regard there was no Answer yet made to these Articles, it is Ordered by this House, That the said Archbishop of Canterbury shall put in his Answer in Writing, into this House, to the First and furthere Articles of Impeachment brought up from the House of Commons against him, by Monday Morning next peremptorily; and that the same Counsel formerly assigned him shall be of Counsel with him.
Adjourn.
