At the Parliament met at Westminster, on Occasion of the Demise of His late Majesty King George the Second (of Blessed Memory), in Pursuance of an Act of the Sixth Year of the Reign of Her late Majesty Queen Anne, intituled, "An Act for the Security of Her Majesty's Person and Government, and of the Succession of the Crown of Great Britain in the Protestant Line."

DIE Dominico, 26^o Octobris.

L. Mansfield appointed Speaker by Commission.

The Lord Keeper being absent; the Lords were informed, "That a Commission under the Great Seal had been granted to William Lord Mansfield, Lord Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench, to supply the Room and Place of Lord Keeper in this House in his Absence."

Whereupon the said Commission was read, by the Clerk, as follows; (videlicet,)

"GEORGE R.

"George the Second, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and so forth. To Our Right Trusty and Well-beloved Counsellor William Lord Mansfield, Our Chief Justice assigned to hold Pleas before Us, Greeting: Know ye, that We, trusting in your approved Fidelity, Wisdom, and Discretion, have constituted, named, and appointed, and by these Presents do constitute, name, and authorize you, from Time to Time, during Our Pleasure, to use, occupy, and supply, the Room and Place of Lord Keeper in the Upper House of Parliament, amongst the Lords Spiritual and Temporal there assembled, during the Absence of Our Right Trusty and Well-beloved Counsellor Sir Robert Henley Knight, Lord Keeper of Our Great Seal of Great Britain, from his accustomed Place in Our said Upper House of Parliament; and then and there to do and execute all such Things as Our said Keeper of the Great Seal of Great Britain should or might do in that Behalf, if he was there personally present, using and supplying the same Room and Place: Wherefore We will and command you, the said William Lord Mansfield, to attend and execute the Premises with Effect; and these Our Letters Patent shall be your sufficient Warrant and Discharge for the same in every Behalf. In Witness whereof, We have caused these Our Letters to be made Patent.

"Witness Ourself, at Westminster, the Seventh Day of November, in the Thirty-second Year of Our Reign.

"By the King Himself, signed with His own Hand.

"Yorke & Yorke."

Then the Lord Mansfield was called upon by the Lords to take his Place upon the Woolsack; and their Lordships appointed the Mace to be laid thereupon, and to be carried before him.

The Lord Mansfield Speaker singly, in the First Place, at the Table, took the Oaths, and made and subscribed the Declaration, and also took and subscribed the Oath of Abjuration, pursuant to the Statutes.

The Lords following also took the Oaths, and made and subscribed the Declaration, and also took and subscribed the Oath of Abjuration, pursuant to the Statutes.

The House was adjourned during Pleasure, for the Lords Commissioners to robe.

The House was resumed.

Then Three of the Lords Commissioners, being in their Robes, and seated on a Form placed between the Throne and the Woolsack; the Lord Keeper in the Middle; with the Archbishop of Canterbury on his Right Hand, and the Earl of Holdernesse on his Left; commanded the Deputy Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod to let the Commons know, "The Lords Commissioners desire their immediate Attendance in this House, to hear the Commission read."

Who being come, with their Speaker; the Commission was read, by the Clerk, as follows:

Whereas, for certain arduous and urgent Affairs, concerning Us, the State and Defence of Our Kingdom of Great Britain and the Church, this Our present Parliament was ordered to begin, and to be held at Our City of Westminster, upon the Thirtyfirst Day of May, in the Twenty-seventh Year of the Reign of Our late Sovereign Lord King George the Second, of Blessed Memory; and from thence, by several Adjournments and Prorogations, was adjourned and prorogued to and until Thursday the Eighteenth Day of September last past, on which Day the said Parliament was ordered to be further prorogued to and until Thursday the Thirteenth Day of November now next following: And whereas the said Parliament so in being at the Time of the Death of the said late King George the Second, and then separated by Prorogation, is (by virtue of the Act of Parliament in that Behalf lately made) Our Parliament, and is to convene and sit as Our Parliament: Know ye nevertheless, that, for certain urgent Causes and Considerations Us especially moving, We have thought fit to prorogue Our said Parliament: We, therefore, confiding very much in your Fidelity, Prudence, and Circumspection, have, by Advice and Consent of Our Council, assigned you Our Commissioners; giving to you, or to any Three or more of you, by virtue of these Presents, full Power and Authority, upon this present Wednesday, being the Twenty-ninth Day of this Instant October, in Our Name, to prorogue and continue Our present Parliament, at Our City of Westminster aforesaid, until and unto the said Thirteenth Day of November now next following, there then to be held and sit: And therefore We command you, that you diligently attend to the Premises, and effectually fulfil them in the Manner aforesaid. We also strictly command all and singular Our Archbishops, Dukes, Marquises, Earls, Viscounts, Bishops, Barons, Knights, Citizens, Burgesses, and Commissioners for Our Counties and Boroughs, and all others whom it concerns to meet at Our said Parliament, by virtue of these Presents, that they observe, obey, and assist you, in executing the Premises, as they ought to do. In Witness whereof, We have caused these Our Letters to be made Patent.

Which done; the Lord Keeper said,

Parliament prorogued.

"My Lords, and Gentlemen,

"By virtue of His Majesty's Commission under the Great Seal, to us and other Lords directed, and now read, we do, in His Majesty's Name, and in Obedience to His Commands, prorogue this Parliament to Thursday the Thirteenth Day of November next, to be then here held: And this Parliament is accordingly prorogued to Thursday the Thirteenth Day of November next."
