PRAYERS.

Bill for creating Tithes.

The Earl of Bollingbrooke reported, "That the Committee for the Bill concerning creating of Tithes met Yesterday; but could not proceed therein, in regard their Lordships found some Difficulties of Law upon the Statute of Mortmain: Therefore desired Assistance of some of the Judges therein."

Hereupon the House appointed the Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench and Baron Turner to attend the said Committee, to assist them therein, on Thursday next.

Poor and Highways Bills.

ORDERED, That the Committee appointed to consider of the putting into Execution the Act for Relief of the Poor, and the Act for mending Highways, do meet on Friday Morning next, at Nine of the Clock.

Bill to make Rivers navigable in Surry, Sussex, and Hants.

Hodie 2a vice lecta est Billa, "An Act to make navigable, or otherwise passable, divers Rivers, from Greensteade, Arundell, Petersfeild, Darkin, and Farnham, in the Counties of Surrey, Sussex, and South'on, and from South'ton to Winchester and Alsford."

ORDERED, That the Consideration of this Bill is committed to these Lords following; and to hear all Persons therein concerned:

Message from H. C. with Bills.

A Message was brought from the House of Commons, by Sir Solomon Swale Knight, and others; who brought up Two Bills, passed by the House of Commons; to which their Lordships Concurrence is desired:

1. "An Act to enable the Sale of Lands of Richard Senior and Anthony Senior, deceased, for Payment of some of their Debts."

2. "An Act for the Punishment of unlawful cutting or stealing of Wood and Underwood, and Destroyers of young Timber Trees."

Petition to the King, against Jesuits and Priests.

The Lord Chancellor reported, "That the Committee have met, and prepared the Draught of a Petition to be presented to the King, as an Expedient to the Vote brought from the House of Commons concerning Jesuits and Priests; which is offered to their Lordships Consideration."

The said Petition was read, in hæc verba; videlicet,

"To the King's Most Excellent Majesty:

"The humble Representation and Petition of the Lords and assembled in Parliament;"

"Sheweth,"

"That, notwithstanding Your Majesty's unquestionable Affection and Zeal for the true Protestant Religion manifested in Your constant Profession and Practice against all Provocations and Temptations whatsoever, yet, by the extraordinary Resort of Jesuits and Romish Priests into this Kingdom in far greater Numbers than hath been known, Your good Subjects generally are much affected with Jealousy and Apprehension, that the Popish Religion may much increase in this Kingdom (which Your Majesty hath most piously desired may be prevented), and so the Peace both in Church and State may be insensibly disturbed, to the great Danger of both."

"Your Two Houses of Parliament are therefore humble Suitors to Your Majesty, to apply some sure Remedy to this growing Mischief; and that You will, by Your Royal Wisdom, take some such effectual Course, that Your Majesty may be informed of the true Number of the Romish Priests and Jesuits which are within this Your Kingdom, and the Places of their Abode or Residence; and that, when Your Majesty shall receive true Information of their great Number, You will take the like effectual Care that they depart this Kingdom; and that You will not connive at the Stay of any of them, of whose Modesty and peaceable Behaviour you are not, upon some Observation and Experience of Your own, or other very good Testimony, well assured. And if this pious Care and Candour in Your Majesty doth not produce the wished Effects, Your Two Houses of Parliament will be ready to present such further humble Advice to Your Majesty as the Perverseness and Obstinacy of ill Men shall make necesary for Your Affairs, and for the Peace and Tranquillity of Your Kingdom."

And, after a serious Debate thereof,

The Question being put, "Whether this Petition and Address now read shall pass?"

It was Resolved in the Affirmative.

ORDERED, That this Petition be communicated to the House of Commons, at a Conference, on Thursday Morning next.
