Spahan, a Persian Merchant, a Collection for his Losses.

Upon reading the Petition of Syrack Spahan, Merchant of Persia; desiring, "to have a Collection for his great Losses at Sea;"

It is Ordered, That it be recommended to the Commissioners of the Great Seal, to grant the Petitioner a Brief, to have the Collection of London and Midd.

Spanish Secretary's Son, who reformed, to have an Employment at Oxford.

The House being informed, "That Son to the Secretary of Spayne, who is turned a Protestant, and hath left his Country and Friends for his Religion, and having no Means to subsist withal:"

It is Ordered, To be referred to the Visitors of the University of Oxford, that he may have some Employment, for his Subsistence, and Increase of Learning.

Shipton, a Pass.

Ordered, That Marmaduke Shipton shall have Pass, to go into The Low Countries.

Message from the H. C. with Names of Sheriffs; for Committees to meet about the Alteration made to the Bill in an unparliamentary Way;

A Message was brought from the House of Commons, by Sir Robert Harley Knight, &c.; who brought up divers Particulars, wherein they desire their Lordships Concurrence:

1. Certain Votes concerning the appointing Names of Persons to be Sheriffs of the Counties Kent, Oxford, Warwicke, Worcester, Lync. Stafford, and Cardigan.

2. Whereas, at a late Conference, their Lordships did communicate to them some Abuse in the transacting of a Business between the Houses, and they have examined their Clerk, who denies it; therefore they desire their Lordships would please to appoint a Committee, and the House of Commons will name a proportionable Number, to join to examine the Business upon Oath, and to report the same to the House.

with an Order, and to remind the Lords of another.

3. To put their Lordships in Mind of an Order for Three Thousand Pounds to be paid, out of the Lord Willoughbie's Estate, to the Lancashire Forces.

4. An Order for the Committee of Sequestrations of London to call Collectors for the Army to an Accompt.

The Votes for the Sheriffs were read.

And this House agreed;

To George Selby Esquire, to be Sheriff of the County of Kent.

To. Mr. Harman, of Middleton Stone, to be Sheriff of the County of Oxon.

To Thomas Cookes Esquire, to be Sheriff of the County of Worcester.

To Edward Maddison, to be Sheriff of the County of Lyncolne.

To Anthony Stawton Esquire, in the Place of Mr. George Browne, this House adheres.

To Sir Edward Seabright to be Sheriff of the County of Stafford, this House does not agree to; but nominates Mr. John Offley to be in his Place.

To Hugh Lloyd to be Sheriff of the County of Cardigan, this House agrees.

Committee to consider of the Abuse of altering a Bill in an unparliamentary Way.

Ordered That these Lords are appointed, to join with a proportionable Number of the House of Commons, to examine upon Oath the Abuse of the transacting of the Business between the Two Houses:

Any Three to meet; on Friday next, in the Afternoon, in the Lord Keeper's Lodgings; and to adjourn themselves from Time to Time.

The Answer to the Message was:

That this House hath named a Committee of Six Lords, to join with a Committee of the House of Commons, to examine the Abuse which hath been committed in the transacting of Business between the Two Houses; and are to meet on Friday next, in the Afternoon. Their Lordships do agree to the Order touching giving Power to the Sequestrators of London to take an Accompt of the Collectors for the Army. As touching the Sheriffs, and the Order concerning the Three Thousand Pounds out of the Lord Willoughbie's Estate, their Lordships will send them an Answer by Messengers of their own.

Declaration in Behalf of the E. of Stamford, concerning Sir C. Smith's Estate:

A Declaration, that the passing of the Ordinance for Fifty Thousand Pounds for Ireland should not prejudice a former Grant of Five Hundred Pounds per Annum, out of Sir Charles Smythe's Estate, to the Earl of Stamford, was read, and agreed; and ordered to be sent to the House of Commons for their Concurrence.

Message to the H. C. with it; and about some Sheriffs.

A Message was sent to the House of Commons, by Doctor Aylett and Doctor Heath:

1. To deliver to them the aforesaid Declaration concerning the Earl of Stamford, and to desire their Concurrence therein; their Lordships declaring the same when the Ordinance was passed.

2. To let them know, that their Lordships do adhere to Mr. Anthony Stawton to be Sheriff of the County of Warwicke; and have appointed Mr. John Offley to (fn. 1) be Sheriff of the County of Stafford, in the Place of Sir Edward Seabright: To all the rest, their Lordships do agree.

Ward versus Brookes.

Upon reading the Petition of George Ward; shewing, "That one Wm. Brookes keeps the Possession of the Glebe-land of Yalding, in the County of Kent, from him:"

It is Ordered, That the said Wm. Brookes shall forthwith shew Cause, why the Possession of the Glebelands should not be restored to the Petitioner.

Upon reading the Petition of Mustard:

Mustard versus E. of Bridgewater.

It is Ordered, That the Petition be shewed to the Earl of Bridgwater, who is desired to return his Answer to this House within Ten Days after Notice thereof.

Committee for Sequestrations in London, to call Collectors to Accompt.

Ordered,by the Lords and Commons assembled in Parliament, That Power be given to the Committee for Sequestrations, London, or any Three of them, to call before them all and every the Collectors, in the City of London and Liberties thereof, for any Assessments for the Army under the Command of the Lord Fairefax, and to require them to give an Accompt of all Monies received and paid by them upon those Assessments; and, if upon such Accompt, it shall appear they have any Monies in their Hands, to require Payment thereof; and, upon Refusal of Payment, to levy the Sums so in their Hands and unpaid by Way of Sequestration (according to the Ordinance) upon their Goods and Estate; and in case any Person shall refuse to give Accompt, that they may have Power to commit him or them so refusing to Prison, until he or they shall conform accordingly."

"Resolved, &c.

"That the Lords and Commons do nominate and approve of Hugh Lloyd Esquire, to be Sheriff of the County of Cardigan; and that the Commissioners for the Great Seal of England do issue out a Commission to him, to be Sheriff of the said County, accordingly.

Selby, of Kent;

"Resolved, &c.

"That the Lords and Commons do nominate and appoint George Selby Esquire, to be Sheriff of the County of Kent; and that the Commissioners for the Great Seal do issue out a Commission to him, to be Sheriff of the said County, accordingly.

Harman of Oxon;

"Resolved, &c.

"That the Lords and Commons do nominate and appoint Harman, of Middleton Stone, in the County of Oxon, to be Sheriff of the County of Oxon; and that the Commissioners for the Great Seal do issue out a Commission to him, to be Sheriff of the said County, accordingly.

Cookes, of Worcester;

"Resolved, &c.

"That the Lords and Commons do nominate and appoint Thomas Cookes Esquire, to be Sheriff of the County of Wigorn; and that the Commissioners of the Great Seal do issue out a Commission to him, to be Sheriff of the said County, accordingly.

and Maddison, of Lincoln.

"Resolved, &c.

"That the Lords and Commons do nominate and approve of Edward Maddison Esquire, to be Sheriff of the County of Linco'ne; and that the Commissioners for the Great Seal do issue out a Commission to him, to be Sheriff of the said County, accordingly."
