[1235–6] Sale by Walter Joye son of Benet Joye, butcher, to Josceus Junior of 8s. of quit rent which Roger de Benedisse, butcher, paid the grantor annually for a certain shop which he holds of the grantor in the Shambles (macello) of Eastcheap; abutments, the land and shop once of Derekinus the Spicer (speciarius) on the south and the shop of St. Margaret of Southwark on the north; for the sale and renunciation (forisaffidacione) Josceus gave 100s.; witnesses, Andrew Bokerell, mayor, Gerard Batte, Robert Hardell, sheriffs.

263. Note: that Felicia wife of Josceus granted to Richard prior and convent 8s. from the shop mentioned in 262 as appears in Charter Nine (fn. 1) of several parishes.

264. [List of those paying quit rent]: Roger Benedisse; Robert Blund; Alan Draper; Thomas de Estchep; Edmund son and heir of Thomas granted the said tenement situated on the north side of the tenement of Robert Robilard to Gregory Rokesle as appears in their charter (fn. 2) enrolled 14 Ed. I; Thomas Bakwell, 1 Ed. II; Thomas Bacwell his son, 13 Ed. III [See also after 266] as appears by the following plea.

265. Common plea held in the Husting, Mon. 15 Feb. 1339.
Thomas son of Thomas de Bacwell summoned to reply to the prior concerning a plea that he should do his lawful service for his free tenement which he holds of the church of Holy Trinity of which Richard Wymbissh, once prior, was seised in his demesne as of fee by Thomas de Bacwelle, father, and this Thomas whose heir he is, is £6 in arrears on the day of suing out the writ, 12 Mar. 1338 for fifteen years past; the tenement not distrainable for a year and a day and the prior sought the messuage as gavelet; Thomas through his guardian Thomas de Bury said that Thomas was a minor and sought that the action be deferred until he came of age.

266. Common plea held in the Husting, Mon. 2 Dec. 1359.
Thomas de Bacwell summoned to answer (as in 265); [f. 52v] the prior by his attorney, Alan Horewode, said Thomas held of him and his church and 24s. owing for arrears of three years past before the day of suing out etc. 18 Mar. 1359; and not distrainable etc.; Thomas by John Dauncere his attorney could not deny he held of the prior and paid the arrears; decided that the prior had seisin and Thomas is in mercy.

264 contd. William Bacwell, 49 Ed. III and 8 Ric. II; John Squyrry and this tenement is situated on the east side of a lane called Puddynglane or Retherlane between the tenement once of Robert Tropinell, afterwards of Walter Dogett on the south and a tenement of St. Paul's on the north.

267. [1197–1221] Grant of Peter prior and convent to Robert Tropinell of land next to the land of Alan the Draper on the west and containing in width besides (secus) Alan's land 9½ ells 8 ins. and in width on the west [sic] 12 ells 3 ins. and in length from Alan's land towards the corner (corneriam) 20¼ ells 3 ins.; rent 5s. p.a.; swore fealty; [f. 53] canons never to be able to dispossess the grantee and his heirs (de hospitari R. et heredes suos causa aliquem hominem vel feminam ibidem hospitandi) as long as rent is paid; gersuma 5s.; witnesses, Ralph Sperlyng, Alan the Draper.

269. Common plea held in the Husting, Mon. 23 Nov. 1338.
The prior of Holy Trinity seeks against Adam Pikeman a messuage as gavelet; Adam holds a messuage of him at a rent of 5s. p.a. and is 10s. in arrears on the day of the suing out of the writ, 12 Mar. 1338; tenement undistrainable etc.; the defendant came and recognised that he held of the prior etc.; the prior recovered the messuage for one year unless in the meantime Adam satisfied the prior; for that cause the execution of judgment of shartford will cease after a year and a day (ideo cesset execucio iudicii de sharthford post diem et annum).

270. [? before 1193] Grant of Jordan, alderman, son of Jordan Sperling to Holy Trinity of the land which William son [f. 53v] of Nicholas held of the grantor's father and of the grantor in free and perpetual almas for the salvation of his soul etc.; witnesses, Nicholas the deacon, John de Paris, deacon, Geoffrey, Hugh de Celario, Sigerus, Edward the Cook, John de Mereton, Alexander the clerk, Bartholomew the clerk, Moses the clerk, Ralph White (Albo), Ralph the Carpenter, German the Parmenter, Ailward the Baker, Rigero Warino, et de nobilibus huius civitatis testibus, Henry son of Alwin, Richard son of Ren(er)n, (fn. 4) Robert the Chamberlain (Camberario), John son of Herlicon.

271. [1170–97] Grant of Stephen prior and convent to Ralph the Butcher (avunculo machecrario) also called Ralph 'Machechrier', of land which Edric the Butcher held of Holy Trinity in Eastcheap; rent 1s. p.a.; in length on the south 19¾ ells and in breadth towards the north 17½ ells and on the north the land of Wicera, on the west the land of St. Saviour, on the east the land of Holy Trinity which Bernard the Baker holds and on the south, land of Holy Trinity which Edric holds, to which this land used to pertain; swore fealty and pledged himself to the canons in their chapterhouse and that his heirs would pledge themselves (securitatem faciens) on the four gospels that the divisions of the land should remain as they were at the time of the grant; gersuma a London sextary of wine, Ralph and his heirs gave to the canons a stall in Eastcheap for 2s. paid by them; witnesses, Helius the priest, Luke the priest, Stephen son of Toki, Godard the Merchant, Fulcred, Nicholas the Butcher, William son of Nicholas.

273. [? before 1193] Grant by William son of Ralph la Faiciet to German the Mercer of land which Robert le Chachepoll held and land which William Stalke held next the church of St. George in Eastcheap on the west; rent 2s. p.a. except 2d. that the grantor grants that German gives from the socage to the abbot of Chertsey (de socagio abbati Certesie); and the grantor and his heirs to have no claim to the land beyond the 2s. rent; [f. 54] gersuma 1 bezant; witnesses, Ralph Buccel, Andrew Bucherel, Richard son of Ranus [? Ranulf], Henry son of Ailwyn, William de Haverhull, John son of Nigel.

William Facetus granted this 2s. to Holy Trinity and handed over the above charter to the church when he became a canon of Holy Trinity and so German the Mercer paid 4s. p.a.

The prior impleaded Richard de Persted and William de Fisshbourn by a writ of gavelet; the defs. recognised that they were 12s. in arrears of rent at 4s. p.a.; Ralph de Sandwich, warden of London at that time, William de Hereford, Thomas Stanys, sheriffs.
