His will of 6 May, proved 10 June, 1490, mentions his wife Agnes, admitted above (127), who acted as his executrix, and his sons Richard and Hugh (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 9r). He was a trustee of the parish clerks' property in 1473 (Christie, p 89).

Each of the four brethren of the fraternity who bore him to burial were also to have 12d. His son John, probably the individual of this name admitted in 1503 (417), was bequeathed £20.

William Palmer, citizen and hurer, requested burial in the cemetery of St Margaret Fish Street Hill by his will of 9 May, proved 2 June, 1473 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 130r). He left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity. His wife and executrix Alice, mentioned there, is also among admissions for 1470 (129).
  • 17. Probably identifiable as Joan Treguran, widow of Master John Tregraham or Tregrame, citizen and vintner, who is mentioned in his will of 13 December 1469, proved 5 February 1470 (PROB 11/5, f. 225v). He is among deaths below (130). Joan subsequently married Robert Drope who also appears on BR (280, 285) and died in 1500 as the second wife of Edward Grey, Viscount Lisle, being buried in St Michael Cornhill (Thrupp, pp 337–8 and GEC Complete Peerage). Her death is apparently recorded among entries for 1501 (397) where she is erroneously described as Elizabeth Lisle (Lyle), perhaps owing to a confusion with Lord Lisle's first wife Elizabeth who died in 1487.

She requested burial by the side of her husband in the churchyard of All Hallows Staining by her will of 22 June, proved 25 June, 1485 (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 24r). Her husband was perhaps the John Bracher admitted with Katherine (128), and among deaths for 1480 (222).
  • 19. An Alice Olive (Olyfe) is mentioned as the wife and executrix of John Olive, citizen and brewer, who was a parishioner of St Giles Cripplegate in his will of 1 July 1472, proved 10 May 1474 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 165r). See John Olive (Olyve) among deaths for 1474 (169).

  • 21. From 1470, deaths are regularly recorded in the year after that in which they actu- ally occurred. Thus the deaths recorded under the masters in office between Ascension Day 1470 and Ascension Day 1471 are normally those which occurred between Ascension Day 1469 and Ascension Day 1470.

John Treguran, citizen and vintner, who requested burial in the tomb of his late wife Margaret within St Thomas the Apostle by his will of 13 December 1469, proved 5 February 1470 (PROB 11/5, f. 225v). This Margaret is probably the Margaret Treg- raham among deaths for 1450 (29). Treguran's current wife in 1469 was Jane, among admissions for 1470 (129).
  • 23. Perhaps the Margaret Friday of St Benet Sherehog, who died intestate, power to collect being granted to Alice Grindal on 30 July 1470 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 60v).
  • 24. Among deaths for 1473 (155). John Butler (Boteler), doctor of canon and civil law, was archdeacon of Oxford 1467–72 and Dean of the Arches in 1469. He died on 2 October 1472. See Emden, BRUO to 1500.

  • 26. Perhaps the Thomas Rolfe who was a clerk of the second form at St George's Chapel Windsor. He appears in the muniments there between 1454 and 31 July 1469 when he resigned (St George's Chapel Archives: treasurer's rolls and attend- ance book v.B.2). Rolfe was also master of the choristers from Michaelmas 1459-June 1462 and Michaelmas 1467–8. After a gap he appears again in the same sources between 1 April 1476 and Michaelmas 1484–5, acting as master of the choristers in the year Michaelmas 1477–8 and organ player during Michaelmas 1477–84 (R Bowers, unpublished lists of Windsor musicians, with some redating from Sheila Bond's notes at St George's Chapel Archives). Was he in London between 1469 and 1476?
  • 27. John Barker, parish clerk of St Mary Woolnoth, junior master in 1480 and senior master in 1505 (213, 433).
  • 28. Among deaths for 1501 (394). John Rowland, parish clerk of St Nicholas Sham- bles, was senior master in 1485 (258) and 1498 (362).
  • 29. William Colson, parish clerk of St Michael Wood Street, was junior master in 1492 and senior master in 1501 (315, 388).
  • 30. Probably the John Bennett (Benet/Benett), one of the parish clerks of St Margaret Westminster, who appears among the churchwardens' accounts there between 1474 and 1492 (Westminster City Archives E1 (microfilm), pp 113, 256, 258 and 288), as there is no other clerk of this name on BR. In 1474 he was assistant clerk to William Lord, but had progressed to be master clerk on Lord's death which apparently occurred before Ascension Day 1475 (177). A John Bennett who may be the same individual appears among the undifferentiated list of deaths for 1492 (322).
  • 31. John Tate was mayor in 1473; master of the Mercers 1466; alderman 1463–79, when he died. See Beaven, II, 12 and Thrupp, p 369.
  • 32. Among deaths for 1472 (147). Richard Hale (Hayle), citizen and grocer, requested burial before the pulpit in St Stephen Walbrook. He left 3s 4d to either of the clerks of this church to pray for him after his death and 6s 8d to the parish clerks' frater- nity by his will of 17 March 1472, proved 1 March 1473 (PROB 11/6, f. 62v). Other individuals with the surname Hale admitted in 1471 include Joan, Richard and Thomas, but they are not mentioned there.
  • 33. Among deaths for 1486 (275). Probably the William Crosby mentioned as the late husband of Margaret Crosby in her will of 17 May 1487, proved 4 January 1490 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 3v) who was buried in the church of St Benet Grace- church. A Margaret Crosby was admitted with him in 1471 (134), and is among deaths for 1490 (309)
  • 34. Among deaths for 1487 (285). William Atkinson, citizen and innholder, requested burial in the church of St Margaret Moses by his will of 20 March 1487, proved 1487 (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 75v). He left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity, of which he was a brother, for the clerks to come to his burial and to celebrate the mass of Our Lady on the following day in the above church. His wife Joan, below (134), was admitted with him.
  • 35. Presumably the wife of John Tate, alderman, above (133).

Probably the Margaret Crosby, widow, who requested burial in St Benet Gracechurch in the place where her late husband William was interred by her will of 17 May 1487, proved 4 January 1490 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 3v). A William Crosby was admitted in 1471 (133) and appears among deaths for 1486 (275). She also had a son, presumably by a previous marriage, called Henry Green, mentioned in the will.

She is apparently wrongly described as Janet in the London Commis- sary Court register recording her will of 28 May, proved 27 June, 1487 (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 84r) where she requests burial beside her late husband William in St Margaret Moses.
  • 39. Among deaths for 1502 (409). Wife of Robert Hewster, master in 1471 and 1479. Recipient of a bequest (along with her husband) by the will of Richard Clyff, rector of St George Botolph Lane (PROB 11/9, f. 66v) in 1492.
  • 40. Presumably wife of William Payne, master in 1471 and 1480.
  • 41. Perhaps the Richard Orchard ordained acolyte and subdeacon on 21 September 1443 and priest on 28 March 1444 on the title of Angle, Pembroke, by the Bishop of London (Davis, 18956).
  • 42. Possibly the John Bell of St Mary Aldermanbury who died intestate along with his wife Elizabeth; administration of their goods was granted 22 November 1470 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 66r). An Elizabeth Bell (Belle) is noted among clerks' wives admitted in 1467 (112) and among deaths for 1471 (139).

  • 44. Perhaps the Richard Prideaux who as parish clerk of St Margaret's Westminster appears in the churchwardens' accounts there for 1466–8 (Westminster City Archives E1(microfilm), p 86). An individual of this name appears earlier as a lay clerk at St George's Chapel Windsor between 1441–3 and 1454–5 (St George's Chapel Archives: treasurer's rolls xv.34.4 and 44; xv.59.4).
  • 45. A Thomas Saunder, brewer and common councilman for Vintry ward, requested burial in the Lady chapel of St Michael Queenhithe where his late wife Joan was buried (although a parishioner of St James Garlickhithe) by his will of 6 July, proved 12 November, 1470 (PROB 11/5, f. 246r).
  • 46. Perhaps the William Codnam, citizen and tallowchandler, who requested burial in the church of St Mary at Hill by his will of 17 March, proved 26 March, 1471 (PROB 11/6, f. 7r).
  • 47. Probably identifiable with the individual of this name who was a common coun- cilman for Dowgate ward c1462 (Tucker). A dyer, Elmet requested burial at the church of All Hallows the Great by his will of 26 March, proved 24 April, 1471 (PROB 11/6, f. 8v).
  • 48. Presumably the Thomas Fermore (Fermory), scrivener, who was a common coun- cilman for Langbourn ward c1462 (Tucker). By his will of 8 March, proved 8 May, 1471, he requested burial in the church of St Mary Woolnoth (PROB 11/6, f. 9v).

  • 52. Stanley entered Westminster Abbey in the year Michaelmas 1460–1 and died in 1524 (Pearce, p 157).

Presumably the William Lord who was junior parish clerk to Richard Prideaux in 1466–8 at St Margaret Westminster when he appears in the churchwardens' accounts there (Westminster City Archives E1 (microfilm), p 86). If Prideaux is the Richard Predioxe among deaths for 1471 (137), then Lord joined the fraternity soon after becoming senior clerk at St Margaret's.
  • 54. Among deaths for 1501 (394). Perhaps the John Paul (Paule) of St Martin's Ludgate with property at Great Berkhamsted, Herts, who left a nuncupative will (no probate) of 29 August 1500 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 212v). One of the witnesses was John Bury, parish clerk.
  • 55. Among deaths (as John Lethame) for 1479 (211). John Lathom (Lethom), citizen and baker, and parishioner of St Margaret Moses, left 6s 8d for the maintenance of the parish clerks' fraternity and the Pappey fraternity respectively. He requested burial in the church of the Greyfriars, Newgate (PROB 11/6, f. 271r). His wife Margaret, mentioned in his will, is also apparently among admissions below (144).
  • 56. A John Belcham alias Hasster, shipwright, of West Greenwich, Kent, left a will proved 15 June 1496 (PROB 11/10, f. 244r).
  • 57. Among deaths for 1474 (179). Thomas Strawston, fruiterer, and parishioner of St Olave Southwark requested burial in the church there, and left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul by his will of 12 September, proved 12 November, 1473 (PROB 11/6, f. 84r).

Marian Staunton, widow of Thomas Staunton, citizen and tallowchandler, who was admitted with her above (143), requested burial beside him in the church of St James Garlickhithe. She left 6s 8d to the Pappey and parish clerks' fraternities respectively by her will of 7 October, proved 19 October, 1497 (PROB 11/13, f. 68v).
  • 61. A Nicholas Boyle, waxchandler and common councilman for Broad Street ward in 1471 (see Tucker), requested burial in St Benet Fink by his will of 25 July, proved 5 November, 1471 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 94).
  • 62. A William Charier (Chariar), citizen and bladesman, requested burial in the church of St Botolph Aldgate by his will of 8 October, proved 16 October, 1471 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 92r).
  • 63. Richard Rawlins, grocer, was a common councilman for Billingsgate ward c1462 (Tucker). As a parishioner of St Botolph Billingsgate, he requested burial there, and left 20s to the parish clerks' fraternity by his will of 11 September, proved 20 November, 1471 (PROB 11/6, f. 28r).
  • 64. Henry Bennett (Benet), with property in London and elsewhere, left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity by his will of 8 February 1468, proved 23 March 1472 (PROB 11/6, f. 36v).
