  • 8. Among deaths for 1519 (598). Probably the Thomas Killick (Kyllyke) of St Botolph Bishopsgate who died intestate in 1518 and whose widow was named Eliz- abeth (Guildhall MS 9168/6, f. 19). An Elizabeth Killick (Kyllyk) is among clerks' wives admitted in 1515 (553). Thomas was involved in a law case against another clerk, Andrew Higgins, in 1518 (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 9. Robert Skinner was a gentleman of the Chapel Royal by 1524, remaining in post until his death in 1528. By his will of 14 February, proved 17 March, 1528, he left 'an angel noble to the brethren of St Nicholas'. See Biographical Dictionary of English Court Musicians.
  • 10. Surname originally written as 'Bougas' but the letter 'u' has been erased. John Bogas is recorded as parish clerk of St Peter Cheap 1518–25, against whom the church entered 'a playnt' in 1526 (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 11. Perhaps the Agnes, wife of Stephen Morris, among clerks admitted in 1507 (460). If so, she was apparently still alive in 1529 when she was instructed to give warning to the fraternities of the Pappey and the parish clerks to bury him (Guildhall MS 9171/10, f. 127v).
  • 12. Presumably the Robert Fenrother, alderman 1511–24 and prime warden of the Goldsmiths 1517 (Beaven II, 23). He requested burial in the chapel of St Anne and St Dunstan within St John Zachary (although a parishioner of St Mary Woolchurch) by his will of 17 March, proved 27 April, 1524 (PROB 11/21, f. 149r). His wife Julian was admitted with him below (514). An individual of the same name was admitted previously in 1506 (450).
  • 13. Probably the Brian Roche of St Martin Orgar whose will of 12 May, was proved 24 May, 1514 (PROB 11/17, f. 263v). Although his death is not recorded on BR, his will mentions his wife Elizabeth and his brother William Roche. A Mistress Eliza- beth Roche was admitted with him below (514) and a William Roche appears among deaths for 1514 (549).
  • 14. Perhaps the Thomas Crisp (Cryspe), citizen and mercer, who requested burial before the choir door in St Martin Pomeroy as close as possible to his late wife Eliz- abeth (if he died in London) by his will of 12 December 1531, proved 14 March 1532 (PROB 11/24, f. 90r). An Elizabeth Crisp was admitted with Thomas below (514) and appears among deaths for 1520 (611).
  • 15. Among deaths (as Mr John Thomas) for 1515 (559). John Thomas, citizen and mercer, requested burial in the church of St Thomas of Acon if he died in London (although a parishioner of St Martin Pomeroy) by his will of 1 October 1512, proved 7 December 1514 (PROB 11/17, f. 226r). He left 20s to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray specially for him. His wife Katherine, mentioned there, is presum- ably the Katherine Thomas admitted with John below (514).

  • 17. Among deaths for 1520 (610). Probably the Richard Keen (Kene), citizen and gold- smith, who requested burial in the church of St Vedast (PROB 11/20, f. 5r). His wife Elizabeth, mentioned there, may be the Elizabeth Keen among admissions for 1514 (545). An Alice Keen (Kene) is also among deaths for 1511 below (519).
  • 18. Probably the John Quickerell of All Hallows Lombard Street, administration of whose will was granted on 2 July 1523 (PROB 11/21, f. 79v), as the name is so unusual. His wife Alice is mentioned there and an Alice Quickerell (Qwykerll) is among admissions for 1515 (555).
  • 19. A John Yellyn, mercer, requested burial in the Trinity chapel of St Lawrence Jewry by his will of 12 May 1526, proved 21 January 1527 (PROB 11/22, f. 96r). He left 4d to every clerk present at his funeral.
  • 20. Probably the Robert Nisam (Nisham), citizen and baker, who requested burial by his pew in the south aisle of St Andrew Undershaft in his will of 19 February, proved 8 March, 1543 (PROB 11/29, f. 127r). His wife Agnes is mentioned there and an Agnes Nisam was admitted with Robert below (514).
  • 21. Perhaps the Richard Callard (Calarde), citizen and painter stainer, of Islington, Middlesex. He requested burial in the church of St Vedast of which he was formerly a parishioner, and where the bodies of his late wife Alice and three of his daughters were interred, by his will of 12 April, proved 27 September, 1544 (PROB 11/30, f. 111v). By 1544 he was married to Anne, widow of Sir John Clerk, Kt. An Alice Callard was admitted with Richard below (514).

She survived her husband, and by her will of 5 December 1535, proved 17 June 1536, she requested burial with him in the church of St John Zachary (PROB 11/25, f. 275v). Warner requested burial in the church of All Hallows Lombard Street by his will of 12 February, proved 13 March, 1511 (PROB 11/16, f. 297v), the south aisle of which he had rebuilt (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 202).
  • 38. Probably the Richard Hungerford, esquire, who requested burial in the nave of the Blackfriars' church, London (although a parishioner of St Stephen Coleman Street) by his will of 12 September, proved 4 November, 1510 (PROB 11/16, f. 268v).
  • 39. Presumably the Richard Oldcastle (Oldcastill), citizen and shearman, who requested burial in the church of St Stephen Coleman Street by his will of 7 April 1510, proved 27 March 1511 (PROB 11/16, f. 295r). His wife Joan and son Harry are mentioned there and match the Joan Oldcastle (Oldcastell) admitted above (514) and the Henry Oldcastle among admissions for 1514 (544).
  • 40. An Elizabeth Tyrell (Turyll), widow, of St Thomas the Apostle is recorded in the Commissary court act book among entries for 1510, where executors are named after her death (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 38v).
  • 41. Probably the Anne Ostrich mentioned in the will of Thomas Ostrich (60, 256), haberdasher, of 24 July 1483, proved 16 March 1485, as his wife and a sister of the parish clerks' fraternity, he himself being a brother (PROB 11/7, f. 161r).
  • 42. This was an extraordinary year in which two masters of the fraternity died in office. John Papworth, junior master, died at the end of the first quarter of the clerks' year. He was replaced by Thomas Pinkey, who himself died towards the end of the year and whose term of office was completed by William Vere who had previously served as junior master in 1511.
  • 43. The scribe has written 'clerici' in error here.

  • 45. Probably the Hugh Walker who was rector of St Martin Pomeroy (resigned 1520) and of St Katherine Coleman 1517–23 when he died. A priest of this name was also rector of Chiswick 1510–7 (Hennessy, pp 117, 124, 284 and lxxi).
  • 46. Among deaths (where his surname appears as Ravenyng) for 1514 (546). William Ravening was previously a King's scholar at Eton 1496–1500, scholar (1500) and fellow (1503) of King's College, Cambridge and was ordained priest on 22 March 1505 in St Paul's Cathedral on the title of his fellowship (Emden, BRUC to 1500). He was apparently a priest at St Margaret Westminster as he requested burial in the choir there by his will of 30 March, proved 22 April, 1514 (Westminster City Archives: Peculiar Court of the Dean and Chapter (formerly the Abbot) of West- minster, Register Wyks f. 96r). See also his mother, Isobel Ravening, named in his will, apparently among deaths for 1514 (550).
  • 47. A Robert Pearce (or Peyrs) of London diocese was ordained subdeacon on 27 March, deacon 10 April, and priest (on the title of St Mary's Hospital Bishopsgate) 5 June, 1501 (Davis, 18926).
  • 48. Perhaps the William Brian of London diocese who was ordained there as subdeacon on 16 March, deacon 30 March (on the title of Stratford Langthom), and priest 25 May, all in 1510 (Davis, 15516).
  • 49. There is apparently a word missing here.
  • 50. Probably the clerk and organ player of this name noted in the churchwardens' accounts of St Botolph Aldersgate for 1511–3. See Baillie, Biographical Notes.
  • 51. Possibly the Thomas Smith, parish clerk of St Botolph Aldersgate, who appears in the churchwardens' accounts there during the years 1511–6 (Baillie, Biographical Notes). He is erroneously conflated by Baillie with the individual of the same name who was clerk of St Andrew Undershaft and master in 1490. The latter apparently died in 1513 (547).
  • 52. William Statham, mercer, who requested burial in the church of St Martin Pomeroy before Our Lady of Pity (if he died in London) by his will of 21 August 1524, proved 31 March 1525 (PROB 11/21, f. 252r). He left 20s to the parish clerks' fraternity to bring him to burial.
  • 53. Thomas Rothwood (Rathwood), citizen and girdler, and a parishioner of All Hallows Honey Lane. He left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity and the same sum to the Pappey fraternity (of which he was a brother) by his will of 12 February 1524, proved 9 October 1526 (PROB 11/22, f. 79r).
  • 54. Probably the William Childerley, citizen and turner, who requested burial in the church of St Andrew Hubbard by his will of 1 May, proved 14 June, 1524 (PROB 11/21, f. 171v). His wife and executrix Marian is mentioned there, and a Marian Childerley (Chylderley) was admitted with William below (524).
  • 55. Patrick Cornish (Cornysche/Cornyshe), citizen and fruiterer, who requested burial in the church of St Benet Gracechurch by his will of 8 December 1546, proved 1 February 1547 (PROB 11/32, f. 16r). He left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' 'company', one of the last known bequests to them before the seizure of their assets under the Chantries Act of 1547.

  • 57. Almost certainly the Pancras Colrede, citizen and parishioner of St Edmund the King, who left a will proved on 5 August 1521 (PROB 11/20, f. 100r), as his name is so uncommon.
  • 58. A Philip Hills (Hillys), who requested burial in the churchyard of St Edmund the King, left a will proved 11 February 1526 (Guildhall MS 9171/10, f. 71r). His wife Agnes is mentioned there and an Agnes Hill (Hyll) was admitted with Philip below (524).
  • 59. Probably the John Portley, citizen and goldsmith,, who requested burial in the church of All Hallows Lombard Street by his will of 18 May 1528, proved 5 January 1529 (PROB 11/23, f. 1r). His wife and executrix Margaret, is mentioned there and a Margaret Portlow was admitted with John Portley (Porteley) below (524).
  • 60. Among deaths (as Harry Marciall) for 1515 (559). A Henry Marshall requested burial in the church of St Sepulchre before the Corpus Christi chapel and the choir door by his will of 28 October, proved 10 November, 1514 (PROB 11/18, f. 7v).

  • 64. A William Haddon, citizen and shearman, requested burial in the church of All Hallows the Great as close as possible to the place where his late wife Anne was buried by his will of 27 May, proved 20 June, 1511 (PROB 11/17, f. 8r).
  • 65. William Mariner, citizen, salter, and common councilman for Farringdon ward in 1481 (Tucker). By his will of 31 March, proved 27 April, 1512 he requested burial in the church of the Greyfriars, London next to the body of his wife Agnes. He left a table cloth and a 'towell of drapery' to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul (PROB 11/17, f. 56r). An Agnes Mariner (Marynar) appears among deaths for 1500 (387).
  • 66. The will of a Thomas Sibson (Sybson) of St Stephen Coleman Street was proved on 21 April 1512 (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 72v).
  • 67. Probably (1) Alice, suo iure 7th Baroness Scrope of Masham who died c1510 (see GEC Complete Peerage sub Henry le Scrope, 7th Baron Scrope of Bolton rather than (2) Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Percy, 2nd Earl of Northumberland and widow of Henry le Scrope, 6th Baron Scrope of Bolton (died 1506) who was living on 20 May 1512 (ibid., sub Scrope of Bolton).
