  • 2. Among deaths for 1507 (464). Newton was prior of Holy Trinity, Aldgate and alderman of Portsoken ward 1505–6, dying around September 1506 (Beaven, II, 21).
  • 3. Perhaps the William Godwin, canon of St Mary Overy, Southwark, who passed through the clerical grades from 1492 becoming a priest on 24 May 1499 (Davis, 10925). He was noted at the visitation of the house in May 1501 (VCH Surrey, II, 111).
  • 4. Perhaps the Thomas White, of St Bartholomew's Priory, Smithfield, who was ordained acolyte on 19 May, subdeacon on 23 September, 1497 and deacon on 21 September 1498 (Davis, 10911).

Vaser was the rector of St Edmund the King who requested five parish clerks to sing at his funeral and subsequent obsequies there by his will of 1 March 1504, proved 15 June 1510 (PROB 11/16, f. 230v). He is not identifiable in Emden, unless he is the individual surnamed Vavesor who was a fellow of King's Hall. Cambridge in 1487–8 until he vacated in 1491–2 (BRUC to 1500)
  • 8. A William Nugent of London diocese was ordained subdeacon on 11 March, deacon 25 March, and priest (on the title of Elsing Spital) 19 May, 1497 (Davis, 18831).
  • 9. Among deaths (as Magister Bradforth) for 1516 (565). Probably Thomas Bradford, rector of St Alphage 1505–14 and of Staines, Middlesex 1513–6 who requested burial in the church of St Martin le Grand by his will of 28 March, proved 19 May, 1516 (Darlington, London Consistory Court Wills, 28).
  • 10. Among deaths for 1516 (566). Identified by Fiona Kisby as the singer who was a gentleman of the Chapel Royal by 1500 and still in post during 1511. Petwin (Pettwyn) was dead by 16 October 1515 and his burial at St Margaret Westminster is recorded in this year. See the Biographical Dictionary of English Court Musicians.
  • 11. Presumably the wife of John Petwin (Pettwyn), gentleman of the Chapel Royal, above (415). Her death is not recorded, but she is probably the Philippa Petwin who was dead by 4 July 1517, administration of her goods being granted to her execu- tors including Robert Dandy, priest of St Margaret Westminster (Westminster City Archives: Register Wyks f 125r). John was buried at the latter church in 1515.
  • 12. Nicholas Mattock the Elder, Chamberlain of London. He requested burial in the church of St Andrew, Hitchin, Herts, where his late wife Elizabeth was buried, by his will of 20 November (?)1520 [rather than the 1521 as written], proved 30 October 1521 (PROB 11/20, f. 123r). His current wife Agnes is mentioned there and is presumably the Agnes Mattock (Matoke) below (418).
  • 13. Among deaths (as Master Thomas Watts (Wattys) for 1507 (467). Probably the citizen and draper of this name who requested burial in the new chapel of St Mary at Hill where he was a parishioner. His wife Elizabeth is mentioned there and an Elizabeth Watts is also among admissions below (418).
  • 14. Among deaths for 1518 (588). Presumably Bernard Flower, the King's glazier. In his will of 25 July, proved 14 August, 1517, he is described as living in the precinct of St Thomas's Hospital, Southwark, and he requested burial in the chapel of St George within St George [Southwark] (PROB 11/18, f. 250v).
  • 15. Among deaths for 1520 (610). Probably the Thomas Pascall, goldsmith, who requested burial in the churchyard of St Dunstan in the West by his will of 12 February, proved 17 March, 1520 (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 143r) as the name is uncommon.
  • 16. A Ralph Wetton, citizen and grocer, requested burial in his parish church of St Stephen Walbrook by his will of 10 August, proved 18 September, 1517 (PROB 11/18, f. 260v).
  • 17. An unusual name, and probably identifiable with the Stephen Fesaunt or Fesanus, merchant, of Venice, who requested burial within the church of the Austin Friars (although he was a parishioner of 'St Bartholomew') by his will of 18 April, proved 6 June, 1533 (PROB 11/25, f. 13v).
  • 18. Among deaths for 1511 (518). Probably the Thomas Alderton (Aldyrton), citizen and butcher, who requested burial by the cross in the churchyard of St Nicholas Shambles by his will of 25 May 1508, proved 28 August 1510 (PROB 11/16, f. 236v). One of his two wives, Joan, mentioned in his will, was apparently admitted with him below (418). He left 6d to the parish clerk of St Nicholas Shambles for being present at his yearly obit.
  • 19. Among deaths for 1512 (528). Possibly the John Robinson, citizen and broderer, who requested burial in the church of the Greyfriars, London, where his body was to be brought by river from Battersea by his will of 19 August, proved 4 September, 1511 (PROB 11/17, f. 20r). His wife Joan is mentioned there. A Joan Robinson was admitted with John below (418).

Simon Skern, citizen and fishmonger, requested burial in the cloister of St Nicholas Cole Abbey, where his late wife was interred, by his will of 18 July, proved 13 December, 1507 (PROB 11/15, f. 246v). A current wife, Margery, is mentioned in this will and a Margery Skern was admitted with Simon below (418).

He left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity to come to his burial and sing a mass of Our Lady 'as there custom is' and 6s 8d to the Pappey fraternity for their attendance.   • 36. Presumably William Westminster, monk of Westminster Abbey, admitted in the year Michaelmas 1493–4, first mass 1498–9, custos feretri 1508–13, chamberlain 1509–28, who died in 1532–3 (Pearce, p 176).
  • 37. Probably the George Donne who is noted as master of the Hospital of St Augustine Pappey at various dates between 1508 and 1523 (VCH London, I, 550) as several other masters of the Pappey fraternity are noted on BR.

  • 40. Christopher Askew, Kt, alderman 1524–39, mayor 1533; thrice master of the Drapers (Beaven, II, 25). By his will of 25 February 1535, proved 29 August 1539, he left 10s to the parish clerks' fraternity, of which he was a brother, to pray for his soul (PROB 11/27, f. 239v). He was buried in the church of St John the Evangelist where his monument was erected (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 351). The Parnel (Petronella), admitted with him below (427) is presumably his wife, although by 1535 he was married to an Emma Askew.
  • 41. Robert Carr, citizen and goldsmith, requested burial in the church of St Nicholas Cole Abbey by his will of 1 September 1508, administration 2 December 1523 (PROB 11/21, f. 119r). He left a dozen spoons and a mazer to the parish clerks' fraternity, as well as 4d to each clerk of the brotherhood bringing him to burial and another 4d to each of them singing at the mass of Our Lady on the morrow
  • 42. Among deaths for 1520 (610). Perhaps the John Condall, citizen and salter of St Mary at Hill, who left a will of 29 January, proved 6 February, 1520 (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 139v).
  • 43. John Mundy, alderman 1513–37 and prime warden of the Goldsmiths 1519, who died in September 1537 (Beaven, II, 23). Among other bequests he left 20s each to the fraternities of the parish clerks and the Sixty Priests along with £66 13s 4d to the Goldsmiths' Company in order to keep his obit at St Peter Cheap where he wished to be buried with his late wife Margaret according to his will of 12 July, proved 27 September, 1537 (PROB 11/27, f. 72v). Margaret Mundy (Monde), admitted with him below (427) is among deaths for 1507 (468).
  • 44. Presumably the Richard Smith, citizen and merchant taylor, who requested burial in the church of St John the Evangelist by his will of 22 March 1525, proved 1 June 1527 (PROB 11/22, f. 154v). He left 10s to the Pappey brotherhood and 10s to the parish clerks' fraternity to attend his funeral to pray for his soul and to sing the mass of Our Lady on the morrow. Also a member of the Jesus guild at St Paul's (New, Cult of the Holy Name of Jesus, Appendix 3, p 401).
  • 45. Among deaths for 1505 (442). Probably the Thomas Collins (Colyns), citizen and fishmonger, who requested burial in the church of St Mary at Hill in his will of 9 May 1502, proved 19 June 1504 (PROB 11/14, f. 103r). This mentions his wife, Alice, and an Alice Collins (Colyns) was admitted with Thomas below (427).

  • 50. Sir Richard Hastings, styled Lord Willoughby 1485–1503 as the husband of Joan de Welles, Baroness Willoughby and Welles. He was buried in the church of the Greyfriars, London in September 1503. His will of 18 March 1502 was proved 5 October 1503 (PROB 11/13, ff. 217v, 243v).   • 51. Probably Ralph (or Randall) Hudson, goldsmith, who requested burial in the church of the Greyfriars, London before Our Lady of Pity by his will of 27 June 1503, which was also the date of his death (PROB 11/13, f. 260v).
  • 52. Perhaps the William White, Kt, alderman 1482–1504; mayor and MP London 1489; five times master of the Drapers (Beaven, II, 17; Thrupp, p 374). By his will of 4 September 1500, proved 19 February 1504, he requested burial in the church of St Swithun London Stone and left a general bequest of 20s to poor priests and for clerks' wages and ringing of bells at his obit (PROB 11/14, f. 26r).
  • 53. John Percival, Kt, alderman 1485–1503, and merchant taylor, who was mayor in 1498 (Beaven, II, 17; Thrupp, p 360). He requested burial in the church of St Mary Woolnoth by his will of 4 March, proved 29 May, 1503 (PROB 11/13, f. 191v). His name has clearly been slipped in at the end of the list of dead, hence his appearance among the list of deceased laywomen rather than laymen. Percival's wife Thomasine is among admissions for 1505 (437) and deaths for 1513 (540).
