PREFACE
The present volume contains the record of crown and civil pleas for the City of London held before the justices in eyre at the Tower in 1276 together with an exchequer summons listing persons fined or amerced in the eyre. The summons is published by permission of the Corporation of London.
Professor Martin Weinbaum, whose enthusiasm for medieval London has endured for nearly five decades, has not only prepared the volume but has also made a very generous grant towards the cost of printing it. He has asked me to thank a number of people who assisted him in various ways: Dr. Helena M. Chew, who did much basic work upon the text of the plea roll; Mrs. Angela Conyers, who prepared the translation which is here printed; Mr. C. A. F. Meekings, who answered many questions and commented upon an early draft of the Introduction; Dr. M. T. Clanchy, who made detailed comments upon both the Introduction and the translation of the plea roll; and Mr. C. Blair, Dr. P. A. Brand, Dr. Diana E. Greenway, Professor R. B. Pugh and Dr. Elspeth M. Veale, who gave advice on a variety of specialised matters.
