191. [540.] THE GRAND MASTER OF RHODES (EMERY D'AMBOISE) to HENRY VIII.
Has received his letter giving information of his accession, and of his late father's wish to have assisted in the expedition against the Turks and Saracens. Is glad to hear of a similar desire in the new King. Hopes no obstacle will occur to prevent it. The Sultan has lately sent a fleet of 25 sail, under the command of his nephew, to Jazia, in Syria, and is very busy making preparation to annoy Christendom. Speaks of the Sultan's building of a fleet on the Red Sea to expel the [Portuguese] from India (? ut ex ... gallenses propulsaret), and an Alexandrian having a conference with the Turk. To crush the danger in the bud the Christians despatched a fleet to Jazia, which defeated the army of the Sultan in the Bay of Scanderona, on the 23rd Aug. The Sultan is greatly enraged, and is endeavouring to bring the Turks against them. They are shut up in a corner in the midst of the Infidels, and require the King's aid. They request the presence of Thos. Docray, their prior of St. John's, and beg the King's permission for that purpose. Rhodes, 1 Oct. M[DIX]. Signed: Humilis Servi[tor], MAGISTER [RODI].

208. JULIUS II. to PATRICK PANITER, Archdeacon of Moray.
Formerly gave him a dispensation, for two years, from taking Holy Orders by reason of his perpetual vicarage of the parish church of Kilmani, St. Andrew's diocese, or other benefices, and afterwards prolonged it for other two years, now near an end. As he represents that the service of James King of Scots, whose first secretary he is, prevents his taking orders within the said prolonged term, and he [has now obtained ?] the archdeaconry of Moray, the Pope prorogues for another year, from the end of the said term, the period within which, by reason of his archdeaconry or other benefices requiring holy orders, he may be compelled to take such orders. 22 Oct. 212. [3479.] ALEXANDER STEWART [ABP. OF ST. ANDREWS] to JAMES IV. (fn. 6)
R.MS. 13 B. II., 79. (No. 212.) B.M. Ep. Reg. Scot. I., 175. Gairdner, Letters of Ric. III. and H. VII., ii. 269. Has written so often lately and received no letters from James that he now sends his servant to the King with a memorial of the injury done his jurisdiction. Understands that the bp. of Aberdeen is raising new lawsuits in the Rota touching the archdeaconry which James conferred upon the writer's tutor (monitori). Hopes the King will relieve him from litigation, which he would do if he considered the pains taken by the tutor in the writer's behalf in Scotland and in Italy. Begs James will confer any greater benefice on him that may fall void in the archbishopric of St. Andrews. The writer would desire to have him within his jurisdiction for his fidelity and zeal. As the servants of others are endowed with the archbishop's minor benefices, thinks it unreasonable that his own should not have enough to live upon. Requests therefore that the patronage of those benefices may be given to the Prior or Archdeacon of St. Andrews, who will confer them only upon his own servants. If anything moderate should fall vacant in the meantime, requests that it may be given to the present messenger, who has suffered many things in the writer's service. Padua, 22 Oct.

Footnotes

  • 1. The error "locumtenentis cum Domino Rege retent." for "locumtenentis cum Domini Regis retinencia" persistently occurs in these accounts about this period.
  • 2. The words are "sterl-tab'le," namely sterlingorum tabule, sterling money current at the rate of the "table" of the staple, in which all these Calais accounts are reckoned.
  • 3. The lieutenant's office fell vacant by the death of Giles Lord Daubeney on the 20th May 1508. (See Memorials of Henry VII., p. 116.)
  • 4. In printing this list, Dugdale has not kept the spelling of the original and has filled in the names there left blank, as they are shown above.
  • 5. So given in the transcript but anno sexto was 1509.
  • 6. This letter was evidently misplaced in the first edition of this volume when it was noticed in the year 1512. It seems really to be as early as 1508, but may be placed here for convenience. The writer was "Marioun Boyd's bairn," still in charge of his nurse, 25 Feb. 1497[–98] (Accts. of Lord High Treasurer of Scotland, I., 378) and already called abp. in 1505 (Ib., III., 162, 176). He left Scotland 27 Sept. 1507, according to Leslie (who makes him joint ambassador with the Earl of Arran to the French king) and this is confirmed by the accounts of the Lord High Treasurer of Scotland, which show (III., 370) that he was in Scotland in February 1506–7 and (IV., 72) departed with his tutor Thomas Halkerstoun, provost of Crichton, in John Barton's ship the Thesaurar, which was wrecked a year later (Leslie, 79). His brother the Earl of Moray went to join him in Padua in August 1508 (Ib., 140). By brief "18 Dec. 1508, anno sexto" Julius II., hearing that he was in the University of Padua studying canon law, granted him (venerabili fratri Episcopo Sancti Andreæ regio nato) an indulgence to study civil law also (Transcript in R.O., Roman Tr., Ser. I., No. 1, ff. 127–9). The further special indulgence by brief 17 Oct. 1509 (see No. 207) was probably obtained at his leaving Italy; for Leslie seems to refer to some time in the winter of 1509–10 when he says "The King, Queen and Prince [whose birth on 20 Oct. 1509 he has just recorded] being resident in the castle of Edinburgh, Alexander new-made archbishop of St. Androis, bastard son to the King, who had been long in Germany at the schools with Erasmus Roteradamus, that cunning clerk, came in Scotland forth of Flanders by sea." Erasmus, who was in Padua during the winter of 1508–9, in his Adagia refers to his intimacy with the Archbishop.
