G.—The Building Accounts.

By the kindness of Mr. Cooke the Society is able to add the following account of the money spent on the building from 1278 to 1281. The translation, partly summarised, has been made by Miss Stokes from the original now in the Public Record Office—Ex- chequer K. R. Enrolled Accounts, bundle 485, No. 22. Leonius son of Leonius was placed in charge of the works of Vale Royal on 8 June 1278 (Cal. Close Rolls, 1272–9, p. 460), and the accounts show what sums he received and how he employed them during the three years he acted. In 1288 he was sheriff of Shropshire, as appears by the Close Rolls. Another official was John de London, one of the king's clerks, who in 1281 was rewarded by a grant of £40 a year for life, for his devotion to the abbey (Cal. Patent Rolls, 1272-81, p. 452).

During the three years and part of a fourth which the accounts cover it seems that Leonius received nearly £2000. The details of the expenditure will be of interest for many reasons—e.g. the different classes of workmen employed, their grouping under leaders and the scale of pay. The wages given varied according to the time of the year, more being paid in the longer days of summer; the ordinary labourer seems to have received 8d. or 9d. a week and the skilled artizan as much as 30d. The master of the works, Walter de Hereford, had 2s. a day, equivalent probably to £700 a year at the present time. He is placed among the masons, who were naturally the most important class of the workmen. From their surnames it is evident that they came to the building from all parts of the kingdom. The wages appear to have been paid in advance. The custom should be noticed of the employers buying the tools of the workmen when the latter came to work with tools of their own.

Several of the words used for tools, &c., are not to be found in the dictionaries; hence a conjectural rendering has had to be em- ployed, the Latin word being added.

For tools in the 6th, 7th, and 8th years.—On Sunday, 16 May in the 6th year, paid to Walter de Dabinham for 3 (gatis) and 3 buckets for the use of the builders of the walls and for other necessaries, 8d.; for 4 sieves for making mortar, 5d. On Sunday, 5 June, paid for 6 large sieves for mortar, 12d. On Sunday, 22 March in the 7th year, paid to the same Walter for 6 sieves, 9d.; for 4 (gatis) and 4 buckets, 10d. On Sunday, 7 April in the 8th year, paid him for 4 (gatis) and 3 buckets, 9d.; for 6 sieves, 9d. Total: 5s. 2d.

For wax and pitch in the 6th, 7th, and 8th years.—On Sunday, 6 March in the 6th year, paid to Richard le Chauf of Chester for 8 lbs. of wax for making cement for broken stones, 5s., at 7½d. a lb.; for 20 lbs. of pitch, 16d. On Sunday, 1 October in the 7th year, paid for one lb. of wax, 7½d. On Sunday, 26 November, paid to Roger de Tudenham for 3 lbs. of wax, 22½d.; for 4 lbs. of pitch, 4d. On Sunday, 1 September in the 8th year, paid to Roger de Tudenham for 7 lbs. of wax, 4s. 1d.; for 25 lbs. of pitch, 25d. Total: 15s. 4d.

For iron bought (1) in the 6th year.—On Sunday, the last day but one of February in the 6th year, paid to William of Newcastle and Robert of Newcastle for 60 dozen of iron bought from them at divers times, 60s., at 12d. a dozen; and each dozen contains 6 pieces, thus worth 2d. apiece. On Sunday, 7 August, paid to Bate Malbole of Middlewich for 15 dozen of iron, 12s. 6d., at 10d. a dozen. (2) In the 7th year.—On Sunday, 5 March, paid to John de Castro (fn. 10) for 50 dozen of iron, 50s. On Sunday, 4 June, paid to William de Castro for 40 dozen of iron, 40s. On Sunday, 8 October, paid to him for 6 dozen of iron, 5s., at 10d. a dozen. (3) In the 8th year.—On Sunday, the last day of March, paid to Roger of Nortwich for 20 dozen of iron, 20s. (2) In the 7th year.—On Sunday, 12 February, paid to Thomas de Tudinham for 40 glanets of steel, 50s., at 15d. each. On Sunday, 24 September, paid him for 8 glanets, 10s., at 15d. each. (3) On Sunday, 7 April, paid John Umffrey for 16 glanets of steel, 20s., at 15d. each. On Sunday, 2 June, paid him for 11 glanets, 13s. 9d. For boards bought (1) in the 6th year.—On Sunday, 17 April, paid Thomas de Marchinton, with his fellows and servants, making boards out of the king's wood, to wit, for 700 large boards, 17s. 6d., at 2s. 6d. for making a hundred; for making 700 larger boards, 21s., at 3s. the hundred; for 2000 boards, 40s., at 2s. the hundred. (2) In the 7th year.—On Sunday, 4 June, paid to Thomas the boarder, with his fellows, for making 4500 [boards], 10s., at 27d. the hundred. Paid to Nicholas de Buddewerre, with his fellows, for making 1400 boards for the new masons' workshop (asteleria), 28s., at 2s. the hundred. (3) For the 8th year.—On Sunday, 7 April, paid to Nicholas the boarder, with his fellows, for making 1000 boards for the new masons' workshop, and for others needed, 20s., at 2s. the hundred. For straw bought in the 6th, 7th, and 8th years.—On Sunday, 1st May in the 6th year, paid to William de Eyton for 60 thraves of straw for making plaster, and for covering the work in the winter, 10s., at 2d. the thrave. On Sunday, 23 July in the 7th year, paid to him for 72 thraves of straw for the houses and covering the work, 12s. On Sunday, 1st September in the 8th year, paid to William le Rede for 77 thraves of straw, 12s. 10d. Total: 34s. 10d.

[M. 2.] For carriage of timber in the 6th, 7th, and 8th years.—On Sunday, the last day but one of February in the 6th year, paid to Ralph de Merton, Richard de Stochalle, William de Buddeworthe, Walter de Weverham, John de Weverham and Robert de Multon, carrying timber from the Forest of Mara to the site of the monastery, to wit, for 18 days, each of them coming once each day with one horse, for 108 such journeys (cariagiis) at 2d. each. On Sunday, 3 April, paid to Ralph de Merton, he being the sixth, (fn. 11) carrying boards and timber for making dwelling- houses (mansionibus) for 24 days, each of them going with one horse once a day, for 144 journeys, 24s., at 2d. a journey. On Sunday, 29 May, paid to Richard de Stochale, he being the fourth, for 96 journeys, each with one horse, 16s. On Sunday, the last day of July, paid to Ralph de Merton, he being the fourth, carrying boards, lathes and necessary timber, for 176 journeys, 29s. 4d. On Sunday, 29 September, paid to Ralph de Merton, he being the second, each of the two having one horse, for 60 journeys with timber, 10s. On Sunday, 27 November, paid to Ralph de Merton, he being the second, for 48 journeys, 8s., at 2d. a journey. On Sunday, the last day but one of July in the 7th year, paid to Robert de Multon, Richard de Stochale, William de Buddeworthe, John de Wevere, Richard de Bradeford and William de Shipbroch, carrying various timber at divers times in the same year, to wit, for 360 journeys, 70s., at 2d. each journey. On Sunday, 25 August in the 8th year, paid to Richard de Bradeford, Nicholas de Kelsale, John de Morisbaruwe, Thomas de Terve, William de Weverham and Walter de Weverham, for carrying various timber at different times during this year, to wit, for 200 journeys, 40s. For carriage of lime (1) in the 6th year.—On Sunday, 12 June, paid to Roger Froysel, Robert de Ruddhell, Richard de Castro, Richard Dun, Simon Strout, Gilbert Porseid, Randolph Pestel, Thomas of the Bridge, Richard son of Dama, Alan Froysel, Randolph de Crouton, William de Therve, John de Thornthon and William of the same place, carrying lime from Chester to Vale Royal on different occasions during the year, for 12 cwt. of lime, £4, 10s., at 7s. 6d. the cwt., and each cwt. contains 120 (estratos), the carriage of each thus costing ¾d. Paid for carriage of stones in the sixth year of the reign of King Edward.—On Sunday, the last day but one of January in that year, paid to Richard Davi, Robert son of Davy, Simon son of Alexander, Dyke Dauwe, Adam Malle and Richard Hubbe, each of them having one horse and making two journeys per day with their carts, from the quarry to the site of the monastery, to wit, for 12 days counted there and back (retrorsum), for 144 journeys, 36s., at 3d. a journey. Paid to William Lesquier, Nicholas de Foresta, William de Nethirton, William de la Lawe, Adam Ubbe and Matthew Lambard, each of them making one journey a day with one horse during the same time, 18s. On Sunday, 20 February paid to Honde son of Emma, Eli son of Igge, Hamond de Sutton, Simon le Dunne, Robert de Sutton, Egbert Wobiet, John Davy, William Lesquier, William de Nethirton, Adam Ubbe, Richard Davy and Robert son of Davy, each of them going twice a day with one horse for 18 days, always counting there and back, for 372 journeys reckoned by the greater hundred, (fn. 13) 108s., at 3d. a journey. On Sunday 10th July, paid to William le Fox, he being the 44th, who were then dig' ing and laying the foundation of the church, of which workmen somg are "bairardores" to the masons' workshop, others are making the dieches and foundation, others making mortar, some carrying this, some thrtowing the sand, some wheeling the barrows, some working at different places in the site of the monastery, each receiving 9d. a week, and the master 18d., for their wages for 2 weeks, reckoned from the said Sunday to Saturday, the 23rd of the same month, 67s. 6d., 3s. 10d. being deducted therefrom for the feast of St. Margaret the Virgin. (fn. 78) On Sunday, 24th July, paid to Robert de Dore, he being the 20th, each receiving 9d. a week, for their wages for 9 weeks, reckoned from the said Sunday to Saturday, 24th September, £6, 15s. Item, paid to the Friars Preachers of Chester, for an alms of 40d. a week, £24, but there is wanting 40s. of the whole, which G. de Badelesmere, justice of Chester, paid to them before the coming of Leonius.
