YORK. Inq. taken at Hedon on Monday, the morrow of St. Luke, 12 Edward III.

Attyngwyk in the liberty of Holdernesse. The manor held of William de Ros of Hamelak, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee. He held nothing of the king in chief within the said liberty.
John his son, aged 30 years and more, is his next heir.

Louseby. Two parts of the manor (extent given) held jointly with Joan his wife, who still survives, of the gift of one Ralph, parson of the church of Barton, to hold to them and the heirs of the said Edmund, of the duke of Cornwall by divers services.

BERKS. Inq. taken at Erle by Radyng, 28 September, 12 Edward III.
La Tuychene. The bailiwick of being forester of the fee of the bailiwick of La Tuychene in the forest of Wyndesore, held at fee farm, rendering at the king’s castle of Wyndesore 10s. yearly.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
John de Fyenles, her son, aged 36 years and more, is her next heir.
OXFORD. Inq. made at Oxford, 10 September, 12 Edward III.
Lynham and Ascote. A messuage and two carucates of land in Lynham, and a messuage and two carucates of land in Ascote, held jointly with Adam de Shareshulle, her husband, who still survives, which the said Adam and Joan had of the enfeoffment of John de Shareshulle and John le Moyne, by fine levied in the king’s court, to hold to them and the heirs of the said Joan. The said messuage and land in Lynham are held of the countess of Lincoln, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee; and those in Ascote are held of the bishop of Lincoln by service of a knight’s fee.

CARMARTHEN. Inq. taken at Kermerdyn, 29 August, 12 Edward III.
Landestephan. He held no lands or tenements of the king in chief, or of others, within the bailiwick of the said justice, for, by the king’s license, he gave the manor of Landestephan to Maud, late the wife of Richard de Vernoun, and Eleanor her sister, daughters and heirs of [the said] William, to them and their heirs for ever; which manor is held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee, and doing suit monthly at the English county [court] of Kermerdyn, and by service of finding a barded horse or four footmen for three days at his own costs, at the summons of the king’s bailiffs of Kermerdyn, on the king’s expedition whenever necessary.
His daughters, the said Maud and Eleanor, Isabel the wife of Gilbert de Burmyngham, Nicholaa the wife of John de Seynt Cler, and Katherine the wife of Robert de Gresseley, all aged 30 years and more, are his next heirs.

He held no lands or tenements of the king or of any other on the day of his death, because (long) before that he demised a messuage, 80a. land, 4a. meadow, 2a. pasture, 10a. wood and 30s. rent, to Robert de Rokwode, and John de Fordham, chaplain, with the king’s licence; which are held of the king in chief, as of the honour of Peverell, by service of a third part of a moiety of a knight’s fee.

Two bovates of land and a plot of lead mine held of Lady Philippa, queen of England, as of the honour of Peverell, of the castle of High Peak, which is in the queen’s hand, by service of keeping the queen’s forest of Campana in the High Peak in person with, bow and arrows; and two bovates of land held of the said queen, as of the said honour of Peverell, by service of 6s. yearly.
Fuwelowe. A bovate of land held of lady Isabel de Monte Acuto by service of 3s. 6d. yearly.
Tiddeswall. Five messuages and 41a. land held of John Turrvill, lord of a third part of Tiddeswell, by service of 13s. yearly.

160. KATHERINE, LATE THE WIFE OF ROGER SON OF PETER SON OF OSBERT.

SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Wangeford, 4 June, 12 Edward III.
Uggechal. The manor and the advowson of the church, held for her life of Edmund de Soterle by the grant which Peter Jernegan and John Noujhion, to whom the reversion of the said manor and advowson pertained after the death of the said Katherine, made thereof to the said Edmund and his heirs by fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster, 14 Edward II, the said Katherine being then in the said court, where she did fealty to the said Edmund for the said tenements. The said Edmund holds the manor and advowson of the earl of Norfolk by service of a knight’s fee, and, immediately after the levying of the said fine, did homage for the same to the said earl.
There is no need to say who is the next heir because the said Katherine held no lands or tenements except for life.
NORFOLK. Inq. taken at Norwich, 7 June, 12 Edward III.
Wythlingham. The manor held for her life, of the inheritance of Peter Jernegan and John Nugoun, knight, of the earl of Norfolk by knight’s service. The manor is charged with a farm of 21 marks yearly to Alice de la Rokele and her heirs.
Peter Jernegan, aged 50 years and more, and John Nugoun, knight, aged 30 years and more, are next heirs of the said manor.
SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Jernemue, 8 June, 12 Edward III.
Wathe and Somerleton. The manors (extents given) held for her life, of the inheritance of Peter Jernegan and John Nougion, knight; whereof the manor of Wathe is held of the king as of the castle of Norwich by service of 4s. yearly for the blanch farm of the said castle, and the manor of Somerleton is held of the countess of Penbroch by service of 34s. 4d. yearly.
Peter Jernegan, aged 50 years, and John Nogion, knight, aged 30 years and more, are next heirs of the said manors.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Estneston by Towcestre, 6 June, 12 Edward III.
Gyldenmorton. A messuage and a virgate of land, parcels of the manor of Gyldenmorton, which is held of the king in chief, as of the barony of Pinkenie, by knight’s service; which messuage and land are held of the king as aforesaid by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee; 12d. rent from 5a. land, which William de Morton held of the said William in fee, who held that rent of the king in chief, as parcel of the said barony, by the service aforesaid; and 10s. rent from a messuage and half a virgate of land, which Henry Ernold held of the said William, as parcel of the said barony, by knight’s service.
Plumpton. The manor held of Sir John de Wodhull by service of half a knight’s fee.
Estneston. Certain lands and tenements held of the honour of Berk[hampstead], service unknown; whereof Richard de Rothing and Isabel his wife, late the wife of the said William de Sancto Johanne, hold a third part as dower of the said Isabel, of the inheritance of Giles, son and next heir of the said William, who is aged 8 years.
He died on 4 July, 5 Edward III.

LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Norton by ‘le Spitule o the Strt’,’ 4 March, 12 Edward III.
Scalby. A messuage and three carucates of land (extent given) held of the heirs of John Paynel of Drax, then minors and in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service, but for how much is unknown. The said tenements are parcels of the barony of the heirs of John Paynel, which barony is held of the king in chief, by service of two knights’ fees.
He died on this side Christmas, 7 Edward III. John his son, aged 8 years, is his next heir.
Endorsed with memorandum that upon a challenge by the king against Robert de Insula, knight, touching the marriage of the heir of Edmund Peverell, deceased, who was in the wardship of the said Robert, a day was given to the said Robert in the chancery, with adjournments to the quinzaine of St. Michael following.
Petition of Robert de Lyle to the king, showing that whereas he had bought the marriage of John, son and heir of Edmund Peverel, from him to whom the same pertained of right, some of the king’s ministers came by commission under the privy seal and seized the body of the said John, as if the wardship and marriage pertained to the king, though neither the said Edmund nor the said John held any land of the king whereby he could have the marriage, as may be found from several writs of diem clausit extremum returned into chancery after the death of the said Edmund; wherefore the petitioner prays that he may again possess the said child as his chattel, which has cost him much. Toft Monachorum and Hadesco. A moiety of the manors (extent given) held of the abbot of Préaux (de Pratellis), an alien, by knight’s service, and by service of 34s. 4d.; of which abbey the king for certain causes reserved to himself the fees and the advowsons of churches.
Hadiscothorp, Ravenyngeham, and Hales. 60a. land, held of Nicholas de Castello, William de Thorpedele and Robert de Hales, by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee, and doing suit at the king’s hundred[court] of Ravenyngeham.
He died on Wednesday next after the feast of St. …. last. James de Stafford, knight (chivaler), his brother, aged 40 years and more, is his next heir.
Writ of certiorari super causa captionis, 6 February, 12 Edward III.
Return by the escheator that he made a simple seisin in the king’s name of a moiety of the manors of Toft Monachorum and Hadesco mentioned in the writ, because he was given to understand that the said Walter held the same of the abbot of Préaux, an alien, the fees and advowsons of which abbey the king has reserved to himself. Writ of plenius certiorari, reciting the above writ and return, and whereas now William de Stafford has given the king to understand that he and the said Walter his son jointly acquired the said moiety, to themselves and the heirs of the body of the said Walter, of Thomas Dages, John de Toft and Adam de Rodesle, by virtue whereof the said William and Walter continued their seisin until the death of the said Walter, when the said moiety was taken into the king’s hand, and has prayed the king to remove his hand therefrom; the escheator is to enquire &c. 25 February, 12 Edward III.

The said William and Walter acquired a moiety of the manors as above, and continued their seisin thereof until the death of the said Walter, viz. from Monday next before the Annunciation, 11 Edward III, to the morrow of the Circumcision last, on which day the escheator took the said moiety into the king’s hand. The enfeoffment by the said Thomas, John, and Adam was made in good faith, and the said moiety is held of the abbot of Préaux, an alien, who is in the king’s wardship, by service of 34s. 4d. yearly.

Lands (extent given) held jointly with Agnes his wife, who still survives, of the king in chief, as of the honour of Boulogne, by service of finding for the count of Boulogne a sack with a pin (spineo) in the king’s war in Wales, and by suit at the court of the said honour, of the gift of Laurence de Stodham, who enfeoffed the said John and Agnes by charter, to hold to them and the heirs of the said John, the king’s charter [of licence] having been obtained.
Great Staneweye. A messuage and lands (extent given), held jointly with the said Agnes of the abbot of Colcestre by service of 3s. yearly.

172. ANNORA, LATE THE WIFE OF JOHN DE LANCASTRE.
Writ, 6 October, 12 Edward III. Teste, Edward duke of Cornwall, &c.
WESTMORELAND. Inq. taken at Kirkeby in Kendale on Saturday before St. Luke, 12 Edward III.
Ridale. The manor held for her life, together with the said John, of the grant of John de Lancastre of Holgill, with remainder after the death of the said John and Annora to Roger de Lancastre for his life, and reversion to the said John de Lancastre of Holgill and his heirs, by charter and the king’s licence; which John still survives, and the said Roger died ten years ago. The manor is held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
Bethum and Witherslak. A messuage and lands in Bethum, and the manor of Witherslak, except a messuage and 20a. of land, held for her life as above, by the grant of John de Cauntefeld, with remainders to Roger de Lancastre for his life, and to Michael son of Robert de Haveryngton and his heirs for ever, by fine levied in the king’s court. The said Roger died ten years ago, and the said Michael son of Robert died nine years ago. John de Haveryngton, knight, brother of the said Michael, is his next heir, and the reversion of the said manor and tenements, after the death of the said Annora, Roger, and Michael, belongs to the said John and his heirs. The manor and tenements are held of William de Councy by service of 1d. yearly.
Heir of the said Annora, unknown; but the reversion of the said manor of Ridale pertains to the said John de Lancastre of Holgill, as aforesaid, who is 30 years of age and more; and the reversion of the said manor of Witherslak, and of the said tenements in Bethum, pertains to the said John de Haveryngton and his heirs, which John is 41 years of age and more. She held no lands &c. as of fee in the county.
NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Corbreg’ on Saturday after St. Denis the Martyr, 12 Edward III.
Angerton and Hedon on the Wall. A moiety of the manors (extents given), including a fishery in the Tyne, held for her life, together with the said John sometime her husband, of the grant of William de Herle, with reversion, after the death of the said John and Annora, to the said William and his heirs, by fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence. The said moieties, with certain tenements in Styford, Ryddyng, Bromhalgh, Spiriden, Thornburgh, Sessynghope (?), Neubigging, Birkenside, Shotteley, and Slaueley, in the same county, which tenements, excepting the moieties of the said manors, William de Herle now holds, are held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of a moiety of a barony, viz.—by service of a knight’s fee and a half, and by rendering to the king yearly, for the ward of the castle of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 33s. 4d. and for cornage, 12s. yearly at the two feasts of St. Cuthbert, and 9s. 6d. at the exchequer of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, for fines of court.
Heir of the said Annora, unknown; but the reversion of the moiety of the said manors after her death pertains to the said William de Herle and his heirs, as aforesaid, which William still survives, and is 50 years of age and more. She held no other lands &c. in the county.
WESTMORELAND. Inq. taken at Appelby on Monday before St. Luke, 12 Edward III.
Barton. A messuage held for her life of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee, by the grant of Ranulph de Dacre, knight, by charter and the king’s licence, with reversion to the said Ranulph and his heirs, which Ranulph still survives; the manor, except the said messuage, and except 67a. land, 23a. meadow, 500a. pasture, and 500a. moor, held for her life, in form aforesaid, of the said Ranulph, by his grant, rendering to him and his heirs a rose yearly, and doing to them and the chief lords of that fee the services due, with remainder, after her death, to Roger de Lancastre for life, who died ten years ago, and reversion to the said Ranulph and his heirs; which tenements, except the said messuage, are held of William de Councy and William de Tweng, by service of two sore sparrowhawks yearly; and the abovesaid 67a. land &c. held for her life, in form aforesaid, of Robert Parvyng, by his grant, rendering to him and his heirs a rose yearly, and doing to him and the chief lords of that fee the accustomed services, with remainder to Roger de Lancastre for his life, who is now long dead, and reversion to the said Robert Parvyng and his heirs, which Robert still survives. She held no lands &c. as of fee in the county.
Heir unknown, but the reversion of the said manor and tenements, after the deaths of the said Annora and Roger, belongs to the said Ranulph de Dacre and Robert Parvyng, as aforesaid; which Ranulph is of the age of 36 years and more.
