Writ, 25 October, 17 Edward III.
KENT. Inq. taken at Pynyndenne on Monday after All Saints, 17 Edward III.
Folkeston. The manor (extent given) held, by the courtesy of England, of the inheritance of Juliana his wife deceased, of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee, and paying for the ward of the castle of Dover 5s. yearly and doing one suit at the county(court) of Kent every fourth week. He held nothing of the said inheritance in the county of other lords.
He died on Thursday next [after] the Translation of St. Edward the King, 17 Edward III. John his son, aged 29 years, is next heir of the said Juliana.

ESSEX. Monday after All Saints, 17 Edward III.
Mortone [or Mertone (sic)]. A moiety of the manor (extent given) held, by the courtesy of England as above, of the king in chief by service of petty serjeanty, viz.—that he and the tenant of the other moiety of the said manor shall together find a horse, price 10s., and a sack of leather, with an iron skewer (uno chevili de ferro) for attaching the said sack, for forty days at his own costs in the king’s army in Wales. He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Thursday next before St. Luke last. Heir as above, aged 30 years and more.
Writ, 25 October, 17 Edward III.
Endorsed by the escheator that he has taken into the king’s hand the manor of Lodenhalle, which manor, with 2a. land which the said John held of John de Hales, is worth 6l. 5s. 9 1/2d. yearly. He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick on the day he died.
NORFOLK. Inq. Sunday after All Saints, 17 Edward III.
Loddon. A manor called Loddenehalle (extent given) held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a quarter of a knight’s fee, rendering 6d. yearly at the manor of Fornesete for ‘waytefe’ due to the king’s castle of Norwich; and 2a. land held of John de Hales, knight (chivaler), by service of 6d. yearly. He held no more lands &c. in the county.
He died on Thursday next after the Translation of St. Edward the King, 17 Edward III. Heir as above, aged 29 years.

464. ALICE, LATE THE WIFE OF STEPHEN DE LOVERAS.
Writ, 1 December, 17 Edward III.
DORSET. Inq. taken at Byere on Monday, the feast of St. Thomas the Martyr, 17 Edward III.
Estmorden. Two parts of the manor held of John Mautravers the younger, for her life, by service of rendering to him 8s. yearly; and the said John holds the same of the king in chief by serjeanty and rendering 8s. yearly at the king’s exchequer, by the hands of the sheriff of Dorset.
She held no other lands &c. for her life of the king in chief or of any other in the county.
She died on Tuesday next before the feast of St. Edmund the Bishop last. Heir unknown, because she was born out of the county and had no lawful heir of her body.
Writ of plenius certiorari as to what estate the said Stephen and Alice had in the abovesaid two parts of the manor of Estmorden, and by what sort of serjeanty the said John held of the king, 4 January, 17 Edward III.
DORSET. Inq. taken at Blaneford on Thursday after St. Hilary, 17 Edward III.
Estmordon. Ingelram Berenger, who held two parts of the manor of the king by service of petty serjeanty, viz.—rendering 8s. yearly, at the king’s exchequer, by the hands of the sheriff of Dorset, granted the said two parts to Stephen Loveras and Alice his wife, to hold of the king by the services aforesaid for their lives, by fine levied in the king’s court three weeks from Easter, 19 Edward II, with the king’s licence, with reversion to the said Ingelram or his heirs; and such estate the said Stephen and Alice had in the said two parts and no other. And the said Ingelram on Monday next after the Invention of the Holy Cross, 1 Edward III, by his writing granted the reversion of the said two parts to John Mautravers, the younger, and his heirs for ever, to hold of the king as above; by virtue whereof the said Stephen and Alice attorned to the said John on Monday next after St. Augustine, 1 Edward III, and did fealty to him and thenceforth paid him yearly the services due from the said two parts, and the said John yearly paid the same services at the king’s exchequer, by the hands of the sheriff of Dorset; and so the said two parts were held of the said John as above from the said day last noted, and those services formerly belonged to the king as chief lord of the said tenements. The serjeanty expressed in the writ is the petty serjeanty as noted above.

Pachenesham. The manor (extent given) held jointly with Joan his wife, who still survives; whereof a moiety is held of the prior of Merton, as of his manor of Ewell, by service of rendering to him 20s. yearly and suit at his court at Ewell every three weeks, and the other moiety is held of Robert de Northwode, lord of Gattone, by service of rendering to him 5s. yearly.
Margaret his daughter, aged 30 years and more, is his next heir.

Dunston. The manor held jointly, for their lives, with Joan his wife, who still survives, of the king in chief by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee, with remainder to John de Argentham and Margaret his wife and the heirs of the body of the said Margaret, with the king’s licence, as well for term of life as in tail, as is more fully contained in the king’s charter.
Stalyngburgh. Divers tenements held jointly as above, with remainder to the said John and Margaret according to the form of the said gift, of Gilbert de Umframvill, earl of Angos, by service of rendering a sparrow-hawk or 2s. yearly.
Great Stretton. The manor held jointly as above, to the said Robert and Joan and the heirs male of their bodies, according to a feoffment made thereof by William de Kyme, knight, of the heirs of the said William de Kyme in chief by service of a rose yearly.
Margaret, daughter of the said Robert and Joan and wife of the said John de Argentham, knight, aged 30 years and more, is his next heir.

WILTS. Inq. taken at New Salisbury on Thursday in the fourth week of Lent, 17 Edward III.
Ablyngton. A messuage and two carucates of land (extent given) held jointly with Katherine his wife, by fine levied in the king’s court, of Henry Sturmy by service of a sore sparrow-hawk or 2s. yearly.
Alton. A messuage and two carucates of land (extent given) held jointly with Katherine his wife, by fine levied in the king’s court at Alton, of the earl of Lancaster by service of half a knight’s fee.
He was drowned in the sea and the day of his death is unknown. John his son, aged 6 years, is his next heir.

DEVON. Inq. taken at Exeter on Thursday in Easter week, 17 Edward III.

SOMERSET. Inq. Tuesday in Easter week, 17 Edward III.
Norton Veel by Taunton. The manor held of the manor of Cheselburgh by homage, fealty and scutage, viz.—15d. when it runs at 40s. John de Sancto Claro, who is tenant of the manor of Cheselburgh, is a minor and in the king’s wardship.
He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick.
Date of death unknown because he was drowned in the sea, as the jurors understand. Heir as last above, aged 15 years.
Writ to the escheator in co. Gloucester, reciting the above inquisition; and whereas the king now understands that the said manor of Torteworth is held of him in chief, and not of Margaret de Meoles, and that the said inquisition was taken by men procured and suspected, at the suit of the said Margaret, to the taking away from the king of the wardship of the lands &c. which were of the said Peter; if he shall find that the manor is held of the king in chief, he is to take it into the king’s hand &c. until further order; 1 July, 17 Edward III.
GLOUCESTER. Inq. 7 July, 17 Edward III.
Torteworthe. The said Peter held the manor in chief of Margaret, late the wife of Nicholas de Meoles, by knight’s service.
Charfeld. He held the manor of the earl of Gloucester by knight’s service.
He held no other tenements of the king in the bailiwick.

467. JOHN SON OF INGELRAM BERENGER.
Writ, 29 September, 17 Edward III.
WILTS. Inq. taken at Wilton on Tuesday before St. Denis, 17 Edward III.
Eblesbourne Wak. The said John held no lands &c. in the county, because long before his death he demised the manor of Eblesbourne Wak, without the king’s licence, to William West and Nicholas de Loundres, to them and their heirs for ever, together with the reversion of a moiety of the manor, which moiety John le Mareschal and Maud his wife hold for the life of the said Maud; which manor and moiety the said John held of the king in chief, before the said demise, by service of finding the king an armed man in his army in England for forty days at his own cost; and the said William and Nicholas, having had full and peaceful seisin of the said manor and reversion, demised the same, without the king’s licence, to Emma, late the wife of the said John Berenger, to hold for her life of the king and his heirs by the accustomed services, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John Berenger; and for that cause, before the coming of the writ, the escheator seized the said manor into the king’s hand.
He died on Friday before the feast of St. Michael, 17 Edward III. Ingelram his son, aged 2 years, is his next heir.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. Wednesday before St. Luke, 17 Edward III.
Wynemanestone, Swathelyngg and Wolhop. 4a. meadow, 8a. wood, and 62s. 2d. yearly rent, held of the king in chief at fee farm, viz. rendering 20s. yearly at the king’s exchequer, by the hands of the sheriff.
Shupton. The manor held jointly with Emma his wife, who still survives, to them and the heirs of their bodies, by fine levied in the king’s court, with remainder to the right heirs of the aforesaid Ingelram, of John de la Ware by service of a rose yearly.
He died 25 September, 17 Edward III. Ingelram his son, aged 2 years on Thursday next before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 17 Edward III, is his next heir.
Writ of plenius certiorari to the escheator in co. Wilts, the king having been given to understand that the said John did not demise the manor of Eblesbourn Wak with the reversion aforesaid in the form aforesaid, but was seised on the day he died of the said manor, 18 October, 17 Edward III.
WILTS. Inq. taken at Wilton on Monday before SS. Simon and Jude, 17 Edward III.
Eblesbourne Wak. The said John by his writing on Friday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross last demised the manor, and the reversion of a moiety of the manor, which moiety John le Mareschal and Maud his wife hold for the life of the said Maud, which said manor and moiety are held of the king in chief, to William West and Nicholas de Loundres, to them and their heirs for ever; by virtue of which demise the said William and Nicholas were seised of the said manor for seven days before the death of the said John, and continued their seisin peacefully for another seven days until Thursday next after the feast of St. Michael next following, when they demised the said manor to Emma, late the wife of the said John, to hold for her life, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John for ever; and the said Emma continued her seisin peacefully for five days until Monday next after the aforesaid feast of St. Michael, when the king’s escheator took the said manor into the king’s hand. As to the reversion of a moiety of the said manor, the said John and Maud never attorned to the said William and Nicholas, nor to the said Emma for the same. The aforesaid demise was not made in any fraud of the king, that the king should lose the wardship of the lands &c. of the said John Berenger.
Writ of plenius certiorari to John Mauduyt and William Randolf, the king having been given to understand that the said John Berenger was seised of the manor of Eblesborne Wak on the day he died, and that the demise or alienation in the form aforesaid was not made, and that the said John held on the day he died divers lands &c. in cos. Wilts, Southampton, Somerset and Dorset, 18 November, 17 Edward III.
Endorsed that the said John and William have taken inquisitions in cos. Southampton and Wilts, but none in Somerset and Dorset, for the said John never had any lands &c. therein.
WILTS. Inq. taken at New Salisbury on Thursday after St. Nicholas, 17 Edward III.
Eblesborne Wak. Robert Lok and Thomas de Tydolveshyde came there on Friday next after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 17 Edward III, asserting that they were attorneys of John Berenger for delivering to William West and Nicholas de London seisin of the said manor, according to the tenor of a charter made by the aforesaid John to the same William and Nicholas, at Shupton, co. Southampton, and by a letter of attorney made there, which they shewed, by virtue whereof the said Robert and Thomas then delivered to the said William and Nicholas seisin of a moiety of the said manor, excepting the rents and services of the prior of Brummore, John Barettour. Henry le Clerk, John le Nywe and William Shottere, free tenants of the same moiety of the manor, who render yearly 42s. for all services and who did not attorn, to hold to the same William and Nicholas and their heirs for ever; who continued their seisin for fourteen days following and then demised the said moiety of the manor, except the rents and services abovesaid, to Emma, late the wife of the said John, to hold for her life, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John for ever; by which demise the said Emma continued her seisin until Monday after the feast of St. Michael then next following, on which day John Mauduyt, the king’s escheator, took the said moiety of the manor, together with other lands &c. which were of the said John, into the king’s hand. In the demise or alienation aforesaid no fraud took place for taking away from the king the wardship of all the lands &c. of the said John or otherwise. The said John died seised of the lordship and reversion of the other moiety of the said manor, which John le Mareschal and Maud his wife held of him, for the life of the said Maud. The whole manor is held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee.
Alvedeston. The manor held jointly with the said Emma his wife for their lives, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John for ever, of the abbess of Wilton at fee farm for 6l. 12s., 60 quarters of corn and malt, and 192 fleeces of sheep yearly.
SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Romeseygh on Tuesday after St. Nicholas, 17 Edward III.

Snodynton. The manor held jointly as above, with remainder as above, of Thomas West by knight’s service, as of the manor of Nyweton by Alresford.
The said John Berenger on Thursday next after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 17 Edward III, made at Schupton a certain charter of feoffment in fee simple of his manor of Eblesborne Wak, co. Wilts, and of the reversion of the moiety of the manor which John le Mareschal and Maud his wife hold for the life of the said Maud, to William West and Nicholas de Loundres, and, similarly, a certain letter of attorney to Robert Lock and Thomas Thyduleshyde, jointly and severally, for delivering seisin of the said manor to the said William and Nicholas, according to the tenor of the said charter; which Robert and Thomas on Friday next following proceeded to Eblesborne Wak, to deliver seisin of the said manor together with the reversion of a moiety of the manor. In the said alienation no fraud took place &c.
He held no other lands &c. in fee in the county.

SALOP. Inq. taken at Shrewsbury (Salop’), 22 October, 17 Edward III.
Lodelowe. A moiety of the township (extent given) held for his life of the inheritance of Isabel his wife, who still survives; which moiety, with the other moiety of the said town, is held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee.
Stoke upon Tyrne. The manor (extent given) held for life as above, of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee.
William his son, aged 13 years at the feast of St. Michael last, is his next heir.
STAFFORD. Inq. taken at Stafford, 18 October, 17 Edward III.
Tetunhale. The manor (extent given) held of the king in chief by homage and fealty, without doing any other service.
Wotton. The hamlet, which is parcel of the manor of Alveton, (extent given) held for his life, as abovesaid, of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee.

ESSEX. Inq. Thursday after the octave of St. Michael, 17 Edward III.
Neuport. The manor (extent given), including assised rent as well of Bilchaungre as of Neuport, ‘wardpans,’ toll of the market there and of the town, with ‘stalpans’ and liberty of the town on Easter Eve, and a leet held on Tuesday after Mid-Lent, held, by the king’s grant to him and his heirs male, of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee.
Stebbynge and Wodeham. The manors held jointly with Isabel his wife, by the grant of William Garing, vicar of the church of Stebbinge, and Hugh de Calk, rector of the church of Aylmaresthorp, to the said Henry and Isabel and the heirs of their bodies, of the earl of Lancaster by service of two knights’ fees.
Great Donmawe. Certain tenements called ‘Merkeshalle’ held jointly with lady Elizabeth de Bourgh, lady of Clare, and Isabel his own wife, by the grant of Robert de Merk, son of Robert de Merk, knight, to hold to the said Henry, Elizabeth and Isabel and to the heirs of the said Henry, of the chief lords of that fee, by the services thereto belonging. The said tenements are held of the king in chief, as of the honour of Boulogne, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee; and are charged to pay 10l. yearly to the aforesaid Robert de Merk and his heirs.
He died on 15 September last. Heir as above, aged 10 [or 12] years and more.
Writ, 26 September, 17 Edward III. Endorsed by the escheator that the said Henry had no lands &c. in co. Bedford.
BUCKINGHAM. Inq. Monday after St. Martin, 17 Edward III.
Ryseburgh. The manor (extent given), including a fish pond around the messuage and a park, held, by the king’s grant to him and his heirs male, of the king in chief, of the honour of Walyng(ford), by service of a knight’s fee. He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick.
Date of death as above. Heir as above, aged 11 years and more.

LEICESTER. Inq. Saturday after St. Denis, 17 Edward III (defaced).
Groby. The manor (extent given, with field-names), including parks called Bradegate Park and Groby Park, the court of Groby, and the court of a liberty called the honour of Wynton, which court and liberty the said Henry held jointly with Alice, late the wife of Henry de Bello Monte, and Maud, late the wife of Robert de Holand, of the pleas &c. whereof the said Maud has a ninth part, and of the residue the said Henry has a moiety and the said Alice the other moiety, held of the king in chief by homage and by service of a knight’s fee. The manor is charged to one Adam le Trompour in 100s. yearly rent for his life.
He died on Monday next after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross last. William his son, aged 11 years on Wednesday next after St. Gregory the Pope last, is his next heir.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Northampton, 10 October, 17 Edward III.
He held no lands &c. as of fee in the county on the day he died.
Writ to the escheator in cos. Warwick and Leicester, commanding him after taking her oath not to marry without the king’s licence, to assign to Isabel, late the wife of the said Henry, a third part of the manor of Groby, and of the said Henry’s pourparty of the court of the liberty of the honour of Wynton, and of the view of frankpledge in co. Leicester, and to deliver her the same to hold in dower, 10 December, 17 Edward III.
Endorsed by the escheator that in the presence of Hugh de Hastynges, knight, attorney of Philippa, queen of England, keeper of the said manor and pourparty, he caused the said third parts to be assigned and delivered to the said Isabel, the particulars whereof appear in the schedule annexed thereto.
LEICESTER. Assignment of dower to Isabel, late the wife of the said Henry.
Groby. A third part of the manor (full extent given with field names and names of tenants) (undated).

Salop, for although by an inquisition made by the late escheator, it was found that the said Henry de Ferariis held no lands &c. in the county on the day he died of the king in chief, nevertheless it has been shown to the king, on behalf of Philippa queen of England, to whom the king granted the wardship of certain lands &c. which were of the said Henry, that Ralph de Ferariis, by colour of a certain grant made to him by the said Henry of 25l. rent yearly for the life of the said Henry from the manor of Claverley, which the said Henry held to him and the heirs male of his body of the king and his heirs by knight’s service by the king’s grant, entered, without the king’s licence, on the said manor and still occupies it, receiving unjustly the issues and profits thereof, pretending that he has a free tenement in the demesne thereof by the grant of the said Henry, when he has not, 1 July, 18 Edward III.

Patyncham. The manor (extent given) held, by the gift of Ralph de Olneye and Robert de Burlyngham, chaplains, to him and the heirs male of his body, by fine levied in the king’s court, with remainder to the aforesaid Ralph son of Ralph son of Ralph and the heirs of his body, of John de Sutton, as of the barony of Duddeley, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died at Drayton Basset on 22 February last. Heir as first above.
He held no knights’ fees in the county, but held the advowson of the chapel of Drayton, viz.—When the chapel is vacant he and his heirs shall nominate a fit person as clerk to the dean and chapter of the collegiate church of Tamworth, who shall present him to the bishop, and so the said clerk shall be instituted by them in the said chapel. There are at Drayton Basset three perpetual chaplains, concerning whom the said Ralph had the advowsons, and they ought to pertain to his heirs, and they have for their living temporalities and manses (mansiones) for themselves separately in the said town of Drayton, for them and their successors for ever. Their names are Robert de Burlyngham, Ralph de Olneye and Samson de Ashwell.
