118. ALICE, LATE THE WIFE OF HUMPHREY DE BELLO CAMPO.
Writ of plenius certiorari on the complaint of Peter Corbet and Beatrice his wife that on the death of Simon de Monte Acuto the escheator had taken into the king’s hand the manor and advowson of Sulfurton, which ought to have remained to them after the death of the said Alice, but which the said Simon entered upon of his own will (voluntarie), 20 October, 11 Edward II.
DEVON. Inq. 30 November, 11 Edward II.
Sulferton. Alice late the wife of Humphrey de Bello Campo died seised of the manor of Sulferton and the advowson of the church, which she held for life by a fine in the king’s court levied between John de Bromfeld and the said Humphrey and Alice, for the lives of the said Humphrey and Alice with remainder to Peter Corbet and Beatrice his wife and the heirs of their bodies; but immediately after her decease Simon de Monte Acuto of his own will entered upon the said manor and held it from the feast of St. Ambrose, 10 Edward II. until Monday before St. Michael following, when he died. The said manor and advowson ought to remain to the said Peter and Beatrice according to the form of the said fine, and it is held of Hugh Curtenay by service of finding a bedel for serving the hundred of Harrigge in making summonses &c.
Memorandum that William de Monte Acuto, son and heir of the said Simon, appeared in the chancery and asserted that he claimed nothing of right in the manor.

119. ELIAS DE ALBINIACO, deceased.
Writ of certiorari to enquire what lands &c. are held in Pederton and Baryngton of the inheritance of Ralph, son and heir of the said Elias, who is in the king’s wardship, in dower, or for life, or by the courtesy of England, or by fee tail, and ought to revert to the said heir, 15 March, 11 Edward II.
SOMERSET. Inq. 7 April, 11 Edward II.
Pedertone and Baryngtone. A messuage, a carucate of land, 20l. rent &c. are held in dower by Isabel late the wife of Ralph de Albiniaco; a messuage, 60a. land, 8a. meadow, 9l. 16d. rent &c. were held in dower by Joan late the wife of Elias de Albiniaco, but the said Joan is dead and the king granted the wardship of the said dower to William Poyns alias Poyntz and his executors until the lawful age of the heir; and a full extent is given of numerous other tenures in the said towns with names of tenants, but none are held by the courtesy of England nor by fee tail, of the inheritance of the said heir.

120. RICHARD DE PULTON.
Petition of Agnes late the wife of Walter de Pulton to the chancellor, showing that the said Richard, who died 11 years ago and more, held certain lands &c. in Walmor and Northwode, co. Gloucester by the courtesy of England of the inheritance of Agnes Muschet, sometime his wife, which Richard and Agnes had issue Richard and Walter their sons, and the said Richard, the father, granted his estate in the said tenements to Walter his younger son, and afterwards Richard the elder brother quitclaimed the same to the said Walter, who enfeoffed Robert de la Watere who refeoffed the said Walter and Agnes his wife, and now the said Agnes is ousted by John de Pulton who says he is son and heir of Richard the elder brother.
Memorandum. The said Agnes came into the chancery 8 August, 12 Edward II. and prayed that nothing might be done to her prejudice without her being summoned.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. 19 July, 12 Edward II.
Walmor and Northwode. A messuage, 50a. arable, and 3a. meadow, held, by the courtesy of England of the inheritance of Agnes Muschet his wife, of the king in chief, rendering three barbed arrows whenever the king should hunt in person in the forest of Dene; which Richard and Agnes had two sons Richard, the firstborn, and heir, and Walter, and the said Richard the younger died after his mother’s death and before that of his father, leaving John de Pulton his son and heir in Ireland under age, and after the death of the said Richard the father, Walter his younger son in the absence of the said John entered upon the said tenements without the king’s licence, and alienated them to Robert atte Watere, who refeoffed the said Walter and Agnes his wife without the king’s licence; by reason whereof the king’s escheator seized upon the said tenements.
John son of Richard, the heir of the said Richard and Agnes, now aged 22, is next heir.

NORTHAMPTON. Proof of age, 26 July, 11 Edward II. (defaced.)
Robert le Juvene of Sprotton, aged 42 and more, says the said Roger was 21 on the feast of the Purification last, for he was born at Sprotton in his father’s messuage in a chamber in the upper part of the hall on that feast 23 Edward I, and baptized in the church there, which he knows because he had a sister married in the following year.
John Tebaud of Sprotton, aged 60 and more, agrees, and knows it because he had a son born three days before.
John Botevyleyn, aged 40 and more, agrees, and knows it because he was in the town when the said Roger was born, and has knowledge of the truth by other children who were born at that time.
Henry le Clechere of Sprotton, aged 50 and more, agrees, and remembers it because he married his daughter the previous autumn.
William le Juvene of Sprotton, aged 50 and more, agrees, and knows it because his father died six years before the said feast.
Bartholomew de Raclynton, aged 60 and more, agrees, and remembers it because Robert de Wanforde had a … on … following after the said feast of the Purification.

SUSSEX. Proof of age, Sunday the octave of Easter, 11 Edward II.
Sir John, perpetual vicar of the church of Hertef[eld], John de Dallingrege aged 60, Robert de Eweregge aged 60, William de Dallingerege aged 42, Gilbert de Boys aged 43, Robert Attehethe aged 45, Maurice de Hodleye aged 41, John Fabyan aged 60, Simon le Bordwryte aged 60, Gilbert Geffrey aged 80, Laurence Bulfinch aged 41, Robert Wildebor aged 40, Thomas Atte Panok aged 60, William Atteboure aged 50, Robert Atterie aged 70, and John de Bosegate aged 41, say that the said John was 21 on the feast of St. Benedict the Abbot last, 11 Edward II, and was born in Hertefeld and baptized in the church there by the hands of the said Sir John, the vicar; and they all know this well, because the said Sir John de Hertef[eld] was admitted and instituted into his vicarage by Gilbert Sancti Leofardi, bishop of Chichester, on 6 nones of October, 1296, 25 Edward I, and because the same Robert de Brom espoused Joan his wife at Lewes on Sunday the quinzaine of Easter 24 Edward I, and led her to Hertefeld on the eve of Whitsunday, and on Whitsunday held his nuptial feast (nuptias) in his hall there, where they were all present and feasted with many others, parents and friends. Neither in the hundred of Hert[efeld] nor in the whole rape of Pevenesse is there any knight dwelling, girt with a sword, except Sir William de Echingham, who holds by barony as the jury believe.

123. FULK, SON AND HEIR OF FULK DE RUCOTE.
OXFORD. Proof of age, 6 December 11 Edward II.
William de Draicote, aged 50 and more, says that the said Fulk was of full age on 16 November, 11 Edward II, and was born at Rucote, on 16 November, 23 Edward I, ending, and was baptized in the chapel there, and Master Hugh, rector of the church of Aldeburi, Fulk son of William de Draicote, and Joan de Rale, lifted him from the sacred font; and this runs in his memory because he was then steward of the said Fulk de Rucote, who announced to him that he had a son, for which news he gave the said Fulk a great pair of gloves.
Ralph Aungevyn, aged 46 and more, says the like, and remembers it because on that day he was with Sir Adam le Despenser, father of Margaret the said Fulk’s mother, at Ewelm, when a messenger came from her with news that she had a son, and he went with the said Adam to Rucote to see him.
William de Rofford, aged 50 and more, says the like, and remembers it because he was then clerk to Fulk de Rucote and wrote a letter which the said Fulk sent to Drew Barentyn at Chalgrove to announce that he had a son.
William le Blount, aged 44 and more, says the like, and remembers it because on the same day Robert his father died at Hasele where the parish church of Rucote is.
John de Scalebrok, aged 48 and more, says the like, and remembers it because at that time he was esquire of Fulk de Rucote, his uncle, who sent him to Lady Joan de Grey at Schobyndon to announce that his wife had a son.
Alexander de Scalebrok, aged 43 and more, says the like, and remembers it because on that day he went with Lady Cecily de Scalebrok his mother, daughter of Fulk de Rucote the father, and saw the said Fulk (the younger just) born.
Robert le Taliour, aged 60 and more, says the like, and remembers it because on the same day Joan his daughter was married in Rucote to Robert Fouke of the same.
John Bikesthrop, aged 56 and more, says the like, and remembers it because on the same day Fulk the father came to Hasele and lifted from the sacred font his firstborn son Fulk, who is now of full age.
John atte Watre, aged 46 and more, says the like, and remembers it because at that time he was serving Fulk de Rucote, and on the same day William his father died at Thame.
Henry Bate, aged 60 and more, says the like, and remembers it because on that day he married his wife.
Richard le Lutle, aged 44 and more, says the like, and remembers it because at that time he was serving William de Draicote and by his command went with Fulk his son to Rucote, who there lifted the aforesaid Fulk from the sacred font.
Robert Fouke, aged 52 and more, says the like, and remembers it because at that time he was serving Joan de Rale and went with her to Rucote, who lifted the said Fulk from the sacred font.
The executors of the testament of Roger de Bello Fago were warned to be present to show cause why the lands of the said Fulk in their custody should not be delivered to him as of full age, but came not.

124. HUGH SON OF HUGH DE PLESSETIS.
Writ to the escheator to take the proof of age of the said Hugh, whose lands &c. are in the wardship of John de Harecurt, 8 November, 11 Edward II. (defaced.)
OXFORD. Proof of age taken in the church of Cudelinton, 1 December, 11 Edward II. (much defaced.)
The said John had nothing to say why the said Hugh ought not to be admitted to proof of his age.
John Giffard, knight, aged 50 and more, says that the said Hugh was born at Cudelington on 25 April, 23 Edward I, at the first hour, and baptized in the church there on 26 April at the third hour, and was of full age on 25 April, 10 Edward II; and this he remembers because he came to Cudelington a month after, when Margaret mother of the said Hugh was purified, and there eat with Hugh the father, and on the following night his palfrey was burned at Bekebrok by Cudelington.
John de la More, aged 60 and more, says the like, and remembers it because on that day he came to Cudelington with John sometime abbot of Osenye who baptized the said Hugh.
Ralph Chastiloun, aged 51 and more, says the like, and remembers it because on that day he came with his lord Sir John Dene who there on that day did homage to Hugh the father.
Robert le Butiler, aged 52 and more, says the like, and remembers it because he was then with Lady Isabel de Grey, and by her command went to Cudelington with Joan her maid, who was sent there to Margaret, mother of the said Hugh, six days before his birth, and there stayed until the said Hugh was born.
Hugh de Barton, aged 62 and more, says the like, and remembers it because on the day the said Hugh was born he came to Cudelington and lifted from the sacred font Hugh son of John son of Thomas(?) de Cudelington, who is now of full age.
John de London, aged 44 and more, says the like, and remembers it because …………………

125. RALPH SON OF WILLIAM.
Writ of certiorari on the complaint of Roger de Bilneye, that since the manor of Dufton came to the king’s hand by the death of Ralph son of William, who held the same of Roger son and heir of Robert de Clifford, a minor and in the king’s wardship, he has not been able to obtain 100s. rent out of the said manor, which John de Craystock granted him for life, 22 November, 11 Edward II.
WESTMORELAND. Inq. Monday after the Conversion of St. Paul, 11 Edward II.
Duffton. John de Craistok granted to Roger de Bilneye 100s. rent out of the said manor for life, which he has always hitherto received, and which the escheator by virtue of this writ has caused him to receive.
The residue of the manor with the dower assigned to Lady Elizabeth, late the wife of Robert son of Ralph, is worth 15l. yearly.

The said William a month and more before his death enfeoffed William Noyl of the above, to hold to him and the heirs of his body, who continued peaceful seisin thereof until Henry de Bergh bailiff and farmer of the manor of Banstede for Lady Margaret, late queen of England, [ejected him?] on Friday after St. John the Baptist, 9 Edward II.

Stephen le Glacior (?) the fifth juror says that the said Richard was 21 on the day of St. Peter ad Vincula last, and this he knows because he has a son, Roger, who was born in the night of the same day and is 21 and more.
Edmund Topsy (?) of Brekles, says the like, and knows it because one Peter de Brekles died in Lent before the said Richard was born, and was buried at Tompston, whose lands in Brekles descended to the said Edmund, who has held them for twenty-one years and more.
Robert Puteys says the like, and knows it because he purchased lands &c. in Wilton by Wetyngg, and by the date of his charters knows the truth thereof.

Writ of certiorari to Roger de Mortuo Mari of Chirk, justice of Wales, to enquire when the said Madoc died, 20 June, 11 Edward II.

He died on the morrow of St. Martin next, 14 years ago, in his manor at Ruthalt in Glyndoverdo, co. Merounyth.
Writ of certiorari to the bishop of St. Asaph, to enquire when and where Griffin son and heir of the said Madoc, married Elizabeth, daughter of John Lestraunge, 20 June, 11 Edward II. Endorsed with return, that the marriage between the said Griffin and Elizabeth was made at Ruthallt on the quinzaine of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 1304, by means of (mediantibus) their parents, as he learns from many trustworthy persons who were present.

Kernetby. The manor, held in fee tail to the said Peter and Isabel his wife and the heirs of their bodies, of Sir Henry de Percy by homage and suit of court at the manor of Topclyf, rendering yearly to Sir Robert de Percy, father of the said Peter, 80l. for the life of the said Robert.
Quarrom Percy. The manor, sometime held of the king in chief by service of finding an armed serjeant in the king’s wars for forty days at his own costs, and doing suit at the county (court) of York; but by the king’s licence the said Peter demised the same to the said Robert his father for life. And the said Peter died seised of no other lands in the East Riding.
His daughters, Eustacia (Wstancia) aged 4, and Joan aged 2, are his next heirs.
Writ of certiorari super vero valore, concerning lands &c., as well held in dower or otherwise for life of the inheritance of the said Peter’s daughter and heir, as in the king’s hand, 11 October, 14 Edward II.

Kernetby. The manor is held by Isabel late the wife of the said Peter in villenage, of the inheritance of Eustacia his daughter and heir, of Henry son and heir of Henry de Perci by knight’s service.
Ilkele. The manor is held for life by the said Isabel, of the said inheritance, of the said Henry by knight’s service.
Wharrum Perci. The manor is held for life by Robert de Perci, of the said inheritance, of the king in chief by service of finding an armed serjeant in the king’s wars in England at his own costs.
Boulton Perci. The manor is held for life by Isabel late the wife of John de Vesci, of the said inheritance, service unspecified.
Skoreby. The manor with certain lands &c. in Stamford Bridge (Ponte Bello), is held for life by the said Isabel, tenure unspecified.

Wharrom Percy. The manor with the advowson of the church was sometime held by Robert de Percy, who gave it to Peter his son and his heirs for ever, and he demised it to the said Robert for life with reversion to himself and his heirs.
Ilkele. The manor and town, 12s. rent in Sutton upon Derwent from a messuage and 12a. land which Peter de Steynford sometime held for life, and 24s. rent in Stamford Bridge from lands which John le Clerc of Ponte Belli sometime held, were sometime held by Peter de Percy, who gave them to Isabel daughter of William de Ergham, knight, for life, who now holds them, with reversion to the said Peter and his heirs.
Boulton Percy and Scorreby. The manors, with certain lands &c. in Stamford Bridge were sometime held by Robert de Percy, who demised them to Isabel de Vescy for her life, who still holds them, with reversion to the said Peter and his heirs.
Sutton upon Derwent. The manor with certain tenements in Cathewait and Kyngeston upon Hull, and 10l. rent in the city of York, were held by the said Peter by the gift of Robert his father.
The manor and town of Ilkele are held of Henry de Percy by service of 24s. yearly; the 12s. rent in Sutton are held of the said Henry and of Peter de Malo Lacu as parcel of the manor of Sutton by knight’s service; and the 24s. rent in Stamford Bridge are held of the said Henry by knight’s service.
The manors of Boulton Percy and Scorreby, with the lands in Stamford Bridge, are held of the said Henry by knight’s service.
The manor of Sutton with tenements in Cathewait, is held of the said Henry and of Peter de Malo Lacu by knight’s service.
The tenements in Kyngeston upon Hull are held of Gilbert de Aton, service unknown.
The 10l. rent in the city of York are held of the king in free burgage.
After the death of the said Peter 12 years ago, Isabel late his wife and Eustacia his daughter and heir, then under age, entered upon the manor of Sutton and tenements in Cathewait, as the right of the said Eustacia and held them peacefully for a quarter of a year, and afterwards Robert de Percy intruded upon the said manor &c. and held them for six years, and after his death Beatrice late his wife held them for five years three quarters and still holds them. Joan, sometime the daughter of the said Peter and sister of the said Eustacia, died and was buried at Grymesby three years ago and more. The said Robert also intruded upon the tenements in Kyngeston upon Hull, held them for two years and then gave them for a debt to William Gra of York, who stills holds them, until he should have levied the debt. He also intruded upon the said rents in the city of York, received them for two years and similarly granted them to Thomas de Horneby and Katherine his wife for a debt, who received the same for six years, and after the death of the said Thomas the said Katherine received the same, and still receives them.

131. NICHOLAS DE MOELES.
Writ to the escheator, on the complaint of Nicholas de Wedergrave, clerk, that Richard Lovel to whom the king committed the wardship of the lands &c. of Nicholas de Moeles had hindered him from receiving 106s. rent in Halghton which he had for life of the grant of the said Nicholas, ordering him again to make enquiry &c. 25 July, 11 Edward II.

Halghton. The said Nicholas de Moeles gave 106s. rent &c. there by writing to Nicholas de Wedergrave for life, who was peacefully seised thereof all the time that the lands &c. were in the king’s hand, until Richard Lovel, to whom the king committed the wardship by reason of the minority of the heir of the said Nicholas de Moeles, hindered him and still hinders him. The rents are held of the abbot of Glastonbury by service of 1/2 knight’s fee.

Writ of certiorari on the complaint of Henry de Went and eleven others (names given) that the escheator had distrained them for 21s. rent for lands in Merston which they held of Roger de Leye by service of 5s. yearly, which rent has now come to the king’s hand as escheat by the death of the said Roger without heir, 27 May, 11 Edward II.

Merston. The said Henry and the others (names given) held certain lands &c. there of the said Roger by service of 5s. yearly, which rent has come to the king’s hands as abovesaid, and neither they nor their ancestors have done any other service to the said Roger or his ancestors for the same, or ought to do.
The said Roger held no other lands &c. in the said town on the day he died.

133. MAUD DE HOWE.
Writ of plenius certiorari on the complaint of John son of Geoffrey de Brauby, kinsman and heir of the said Maud, who held a messuage and 1 1/3 bovate of land in Howe by Malton of the manor of Malton, which Isabel late the wife of William de Vescy held for life of his inheritance, and the said Isabel seized the same into her hand as escheat after the said Maud’s death, because no heir appeared, the said John being then in remote parts and ignorant of the death of the said Agnes (sic) his ancestor, and the same have now come to the king’s hand by the death of the said Isabel, 4 September 11 Edward II.

Home by Malton in the manor of Malton. A messuage and 1 1/3 bovate of land were held by the said Maud of Isabel de Vescy, who held the manor for life, of the inheritance of William de Vesci, by service of rendering 2s. 2 3/4d. yearly, and doing suit at the court of the manor. After the death of the said Maud the said Isabel seized the manor into her hand as her escheat, because no heir appeared; and after the death of the said Isabel, the said messuage and land came to the king’s hand together with the manor.

Bresete. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief as of the honour of Peverel by service of a knight’s fee. Whether he was seised of the other moiety of the manor on the day he died, or not, is unknown to the jury because by a writ called eligit the sheriff delivered the same to Walter de Langeton bishop of Lichfield and Coventry for a debt of 260l., until he should have levied the debt, but he did not deliver it by fixed boundaries until after the said Richard’s death.
His sisters, Margaret aged 30, Anna aged 28 and married to Richard Hakoun, Eleanor aged 26, and Katherine aged 24 and married to Roger de Tychebourne, are his next heirs.
