Certese. A tenement jointly held by the said Walter and Hawis his wife of the abbot of Certese, which they acquired of Peter de Huntyngfeld and Giles de Hengstone and Margery his wife, to hold to them and the heirs of the said Walter, service unspecified.
Suwerk. A tenement jointly acquired and held, as above, tenure unknown.

Tadlinton. The manor (extent given), held of the bishop of Worcester by service of 1/2 knight’s fee.
Walter his son, aged 17 on 15 Jan. last, is his next heir.
LINCOLN. Inq. 18 Sept. 5 Edw. II.
Lincoln City and suburb. Certain tenements held of the king as of his ancient demesne by service of 1d. yearly; a messuage, 63a. arable, and 28s. 4d. yearly rent, held by the said Walter and Hawis of her inheritance of the king in chief as of his ancient demesne; and 23a. arable, and 9l. 17s. yearly rent, jointly purchased by the said Walter and Hawis, and held, as above, of the king in chief as of his ancient demesne; out of which yearly rents are payable, to the mother church of Lincoln 3s., to the altar of St. Mary in the same church 5s., and to the altar of St. Denis there 2s. 8d. for finding lights.

Calewarethorp and Swarreby. A capital messuage, 124a. arable, 5a. meadow, a windmill, rents, &c., jointly purchased, as above, to be held of Philip de Lindeseye by knight’s service, and rendering to the king for sheriff’s aid 16d., and to Agnes, late the wife of Walter Ulf, for her dower, 1 qr. corn, price 5s., and 1 qr. beans, price 3s.
Haidore. A capital messuage, 8 bovates arable, 15a. meadow, 12a. wood called ‘Le Suthwode,’ rents, &c., jointly purchased, as above, of Richard de Corfe, to be held of Henry de Bello Monte by knight’s service, and rendering to the king 6s. 8d. for sheriff’s aid, and 2s. to the mother church of Lincoln; and a capital messuage, 8 bovates arable, 15a. meadow, 8a. wood, rents, &c. jointly acquired by the said Walter and Walter his son, to hold to them and their heirs for ever, of Philip de Lindeseye by knight’s service, and rendering to the king for sheriff’s aid 4s. 2 1/2d., and to the abbot of Vaudey 1/2 mark.

(extent given with names of tenants), held by the said Walter and Hawis his wife, of Thomas de Berkeley, service unknown; a messuage and 1 virgate land (extent given), including a water-mill, similarly held of the heir of William de Berkeleye, service unknown; and a close of 10a., 120a. arable, 10 1/2a. meadow, a pasture, 50a. wood, rents, &c. (extent given with names of tenants), held by the said Walter of Thomas de Berkeleye, service unknown. Out of which Eleanor late the wife of Walter le Bek receives 4l. 13s. 4d. yearly for her dower.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at the bridge of Lechton Busard. (undated.)
Linchelade. Certain tenements rented at 69s. 6d. yearly, held by the courtesy of England, of the inheritance of Maud de Mountbray sometime his wife, tenure unknown; and certain tenements rented at 69s. 6d. yearly, held for life by the demise of Roger de Mountbray.
John de Moubray, son and heir of Roger de Mounbray, aged 22 and more, is next heir of the said Maud.
BEDFORD. Inq. 19 Aug. 5 Edw. II.
Bedeford. The site of the castle, with the manors of Hawnes, Wylyton, and Stottefold (full extents given), held by the courtesy of England, including a court called Barounescourt of Bed(eford), of the inheritance of the said Maud, of the king in chief, by service of a third part of a barony of Beauchamp of Bedeford for 1 knight’s fee.
Wotton, Brumham, and Bereford. Certain tenements held for life, as of a third part of the barony aforesaid, by the demise of Roger de Mountbray, for 200l. which he owed him.
Heir as above, aged 22 and more.
The said Roger was still alive on the 26th when the king by his writ supposed him to be deceased, but died on the last day of July.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. 10 Octember (sic), 5 Edw. II.
Faxton. A messuage, 2 virgates land, and 4s. rent, held of Isabel de Welle by service of a fourth part of 1/2 knight’s fee, 3s. 7d., and 1/2 lb. pepper, price 6d.; and the said Isabel (held) of Sir John de Brutayn of the fee of Bailol.
Robert his son, aged 16, is his next heir.

Bradele. A capital messuage, 60a. arable, 10a. meadow, 2a. pasture, 10a. wood, 2 crofts, another croft called Aykeholme, and 68s. rent, &c., held of the king in chief by fee farm, rendering 37s. 5d., yearly at the king’s exchequer; and 1 bovate land held of the burgage of Grimmesby by fee farm.

Wyberton. The manor (extent given), including a pasture called ‘Le Houtmerske,’ jointly held by the said Adam and Joan his wife as of his purchase from John de Britania, earl of Richemunde, by fee farm, rendering 25s. 7d. yearly to the said earl.

Abi and Strubbi. Certain lands, &c., held of the king as of the honour of Dover, by service of 1 knight’s fee, rendering 1/2 mark yearly for the guard of the castle of Dover; viz.—
Aby. A capital messuage, 107a. arable, 20a. meadow, 6a. pasture, 2 mills, 40a. wood called Suntwith, rents, &c. (extent given).
Strubby. A messuage with a croft, 15a. arable, 6a. meadow, and rents of free tenants.
A pasture called Wellepark containing 40a., purchased of Juliana de Gandavo, one of the heirs of Gilbert de Gandavo, to him and his heirs for ever, and held as parcel of the manor of Skendelby, which, with the manors of Folkyngham, Edenham, Hekington, and Barton, now in the hands of Henry de Be(llo) Monte, is held of the king in chief by barony.
Welle and Witherne. The manors, and two parts of the manor of Hellowe and Swaby, together with lands &c. in Alford (extents given), including woods called Withernwode and Hunstanwodelound, a pasture called Ternholme Wodewong, and rents in a plot called Malthorpe, Malberthorp, and Billesby, held of Henry de Bello Monte, as of the barony of Ghent, by service of 3 1/2 knights’ fees and 1/14 knight’s fee, excepting a fifth part.
Welle and Alford. 2 tofts, 4l. 6s. 10d. rents of bondmen, works, &c., held of Thomas de Riggesby by service of 1/2 knight’s fee, rendering 20s. yearly.
Brumthorp. The manor (extent given), including a pasture called Pauntholm, and free tenants in Anderby and Hoggesthorp, held of Philip de Kyma by service of 1 knight’s fee.
Sutton. A capital messuage, 21a. arable, 30a. meadow, pastures, rent, &c., held of John de Orreby and Isabel his wife, an heir of Robert de Tatteshale, by service of 1/20 knight’s fee.
Out of all which there are rents payable for the guard of the castle of Dover 6s. 8d.; for sheriff’s aid 25s. 5d. for the manors of Welle, Withern, and Brumthorp; to the prior of Sixel 24s.; to John Flori for the manor of Welle 20s.; to Alice Warde of Aleby for a tenement purchased in Welle 5s. and 3 qr. corn price 12s.; to Philip de Kima for lands in Sutton 2s.; and to Simon le Chaumberlayn for 2 bovates land in Brumthorp 4s.

Extent or summary of the above lands.
Return by the escheator that the said Adam held no other lands in his bailiwick, but those contained in these inquisitions, excepting 21l. of land and rent in Beseby, Hawordeby, Gunnerby, Alwaldeby, Waldeneuton, Askeby, Fenneby, Northcotes, and Briggesle, which the king gave to the said Adam after 16 March in the third year of his reign, to hold to him and the heirs of his body for ever, and which by the king’s writ lately directed to him the escheator has resumed into the king’s hand, by pretext of an ordinance lately made by the prelates, earls, and barons of the realm of England, and approved by the king.
Writ of dedimus potestatem to the escheator to receive the oath of Joan, late the wife of the said Adam, who from severe weakness cannot come to the king, not to marry without the king’s licence, and to receive her attorneys seeking her dower, 20 Oct. 5 Edw. II.

354. ISABEL DE FORTIBUS, SOMETIME COUNTESS OF ALBEMARLE.
Writ to the escheator. Whereas before the justices of oyer and terminer it was agreed that, of the lands &c. that were of the said Isabel, the manor of Heyford Warin, co. Oxford, excepting 2 1/2 virgates land, and the manors of Passebury, co. Hertford, and Harewode and Kirkeby, co. York, excepting a messuage and 1 carucate land in Lofthous in Harewode, ought to descend to Robert de Insula, as her next heir of the inheritance of Margery, the wife of Baldwin de Vernoun, her grandmother; and that the manor of Newenham, co. Oxford, 2 1/2 virgates land in Heyford Warin, and a messuage and 1 carucate land in Lofthous, ought to descend to Hugh de Curtenay, as her next heir of the inheritance of the said Baldwin, her grandfather; he is to enquire whether the advowson of the church of Briggeham, co. Cumberland, which was of the said Isabel, pertains to the said Hugh or to the said Robert, 13 March, 5 Edw. II.

Brigham. The advowson of the church is not of the inheritance of the said Baldwin nor of that of the said Margery, but one Thomas de Hothwayt who married Joan daughter and one of the heirs of John de Brigham, sometime lord of the manor and advowson of Brigham, and who, after the said Joan’s death, held a moiety of the same by the courtesy of England, by fine levied before the justices of King Henry III, quit-claimed the said advowson to the said countess and her heirs for ever; by reason whereof she was seised of the advowson at alternate turns, and Hugh de Curtenay who is her nearest kinsman on the side of her said grandfather, and not Robert de Insula, is her next heir of this advowson because she thus acquired it, and by reason of the dignity of male blood.

355. NICHOLAS SON AND HEIR OF WILLIAM DE CAVE of Dornee.
BUCKINGHAM. Proof of age 26 June, 5 Edw. II.
Richard atte Lente, aged 40 and more, says that the said Nicholas was 22 at the feast of the Purification last, for he was born at Dornee on that day in the 18th year of King Edward the king’s father, and baptized in the church there on the morrow, and this he knows because in the same year Richard atte Lente his father died, from which time he has held his inheritance in that town and has had knowledge of the said Nicholas all the time.
Thomas Andreu of Burnham, aged 50, says the same, and knows it because in the same year he married Margery still his wife.
Thomas de Worthingpole, 50, agrees, and knows it because in the same year he, with Richard his brother then returned from Gascony where he was in the king’s service, went to the said William’s house, where he saw the said Nicholas in his cradle.
William Dente, 60, agrees, and knows it because in the same year he lifted from the sacred font William, son of Richard Kynebaud, whom he has always accounted of the same age as the said Nicholas.
Robert Thomas, 60, agrees, and knows it because he has a son Richard whom he has always accounted of the same age.
John de Alderugge, 60, agrees, and knows it because he has a son Richard whom he has always accounted to be of the same age.
Walter Goron, 40, William Clavering, 50, John de Burnham, 40, Robert de Aldeworth, 40, John de Worthingpole, 40, Edmund Osgod, 50, and John de Dornee, 40, agree, and know it because from the time of his birth they have had sufficient knowledge of the said Nicholas, and of Walter son of Walter son of Robert de Dornee, who is of the same age, whom they well know to be 22.
Adam de Braye, who had the wardship, &c. sent his bailiff, who had nothing to say why the king should not render his lands, &c. to the said Nicholas as of full age.

356. NIGEL SON AND HEIR OF WILLIAM DE BROY of Ayliston.
HEREFORD. Proof of age. Saturday after the Decollation of St. John, 5 Edw. II. (defective.)
William de Schabenore, knight, aged 44 and more, says the said Nigel is 21 and more, for he was born at Lamboghan on the morrow of St. [Laurence and baptized] in the church there, 16 Edw. I, and this he knows because Robert his firstborn son was born on the said day, and baptized in the said church (the same) day and year.
Richard Comyn, knight, aged 54, says the same, and knows it because on the said day he married Maud, daughter of William de Aston.
Alan son of Morice, aged 60 and more, says the same, and knows it because he is his godfather.
Nigel ap Jervarth, aged 54, says the said Nigel is 22 and more, for he was born and baptized as abovesaid, [which he knows] because he is his godfather, whose name he has.
Simon de Weston, aged 54 and more, says the said Nigel is 21 and more, for he was born and baptized as abovesaid, and he knows it because Isabel ………… was buried in the cemetery of the said church the same day and year.
Thomas de Wyke, aged 65, says the same, and knows it because Robert his son the same day and year married ……… of Nigel ap Jervarth, the said Nigel’s godfather.
Thomas de Piribrok, aged 51 and more, says the same and knows it because Juliana his wife was godmother of the said Nigel.
………, aged 44 and more, says the same ………. because Richard his brother was presented to the church of Lambister the same day and year.
Roger de Motlowe, aged …., says the same, and this …………….. bailiff of William the said Nigel’s father on the day he was born.
Walter le Freman, aged 60 and more, says the same, and this he knows because William his brother ………. baptized the said Nigel.
Adam de Loky … n, aged 48 and more, says the same ……… Richard his son was a clerk, rector of the said church at that time.
(Peter?) Geffard, ……., says the same, and this he knows because at that time he was bailiff of Sir Edmund, brother …………
Robert de Klipston, having the wardship of the lands, &c. …………. had nothing to say, but that the said Nigel is of full age.

357. JOHN SON AND HEIR OF WILLIAM HEVED of Herdewyk.
CAMBRIDGE. Proof of age, 16 July, 5 Edw. II. (defective.)
Geoffrey de … one (?), aged 46 and more, says that the said John was 21 on the day of St. Benet, 4 Edw. II, for he was born at Conytone in the said county on that day 17 Edw. I, and baptized on the morrow in the church there, which he knows because he is his godfather.
Walter Hampt .., aged 50 and more, says the same, and knows it because one William Golene his next neighbour died on …….. St. Thomas the Martyr in the said year, and was buried in the graveyard of that church on the morrow …… [Be]net aforesaid, when he saw the said John baptized.
William the clerk, of Conytone, aged 60 and more, says the same, and knows it by this, that his father died in 17 Edw. I, and was buried on the eve of the same feast of St. Benet on which the said John was born.
Richard Golene, aged 48 and more, says the same, and knows it because on the same day of St. Benet he made his hom(age) …….. Segrave at Conytone.
John Kaym, aged 43 and more, says the same, and knows it because John, brother of the rector of Conytone, on the same day in the said church, married his sister Alice, and he with another named Henry led her to the church and back.
William Quyntyn, aged 52 and more, says the same, and knows it because he had a wife named Thiffany (Thiph’), who died on the day of Holy Trinity, 18 Edw. I, and was buried on the Sunday following in the graveyard of Conyton; and for the sale of an ox on the same day of St. Benet he was excommunicated by the rector in the said church.
Bartholomew de Glemesford, aged 50 and more, says the same, and knows it because he has a son John who was born on the same day, and baptized in the same water.
Wymund de la Grave, aged 70 and more, says the same, and knows it because on the same day of St. Benet he married one Isabel, and the father of the said John was at his house at a feast and told him of the birth on the same day.
William Morel (?) …. rdewyk, aged 80, says the same, and knows it because he had a son Henry who the same day and year set out on pilgrimage (peregre) for Rome, and never returned.
Robert Atebrok, 60 and more, says the same, and knows it because he has a son William, who on that day celebrated his first mass in Conytone, and baptized the said John.
William Habraham, aged 44 and more, says the same, and knows it because his mother Margaret gave him an acre of land in Fendrayton on the same day of St. Benet, and on the morrow he caused the charter to be read …….. Conytone at the celebration of a new mass there, and saw the said John baptized after the mass.
John de Conytone, aged 41 and more, says the same, and knows it because he lent his houses to a chaplain named ……. on the day the said John Heved was baptized, to hold his feast because he celebrated his first mass on that day, and the same day his kitchen was burned.
Robert Cosyn was there and said nothing why the king should not render to the said John the lands &c. of his inheritance, as of full age.

359. THOMAS DE LA MARE.
Writ, 25 Aug. 5 Edw. II.
HERTFORD. Inq. Saturday the feast of St. Katherine, 6 Edw. II.
Offeleye. A messuage and 1/2 virgate land, held of Thomas son of Peter de la Mare, by service of 1lb. pepper at Easter; 10a. land held of Giles de Breaunzon and Isabel his wife by service of 3s. yearly; and 7a. land held of William de la Leye by service of 14d. yearly. The said Thomas sometime acquired 1/2 virgate land of Peter son of Robert de la Mare, to hold for life by service of 6d. yearly, with reversion to the said Peter and his heirs; but the said Peter afterwards quit-claimed the said reversion for ever to Peter, son of John de la Mare and brother of the said Thomas, and 14 weeks before his death the said Thomas rendered up the said land to Thomas, son and heir of the said Peter son of John, and so had nothing therein on the day he died.
William his son, aged 24 and more, is his next heir.
