Bothale. A capital messuage, 330a. arable, 10a. meadow, a park containing nearly a league in circuit, 2 foreign woods, pasture, a forest, rents, &c. (extent given), held of the king by service of 3 knights’ fees. The said lands were in the hand of the late King Edward for four weeks after the said Robert’s death, and afterwards the wardship was granted to Margaret sometime queen of England until the lawful age of the heir, who sold it to Master Richard de Haveryng, late escheator, who sold it to Sir William de Hamelton, and he to Sir Simon Ward, who still holds the same.
Robert the petitioner is his kinsman, and next heir.
John de Seton says that the said Robert was 21 on Thursday the feast of St. George last, which he knows because at the command of Robert Bertram he came on the morrow of St. George to Bothale and bought of him 16 oaks of his forest for 2 marks, for constructing his building of Seton, which was accidentally burned at Christmas before, and was present and saw the same (Robert) baptized in the church of St. Andrew, Bothale, and it is twenty-one years ago last Christmas since the burning of his houses.
Robert de Fenrother says the same, and knows it because at the feast of St. Marcellus (?) before the birth of the said Robert he married Isabel his wife, who died on the day of St. George following, and was buried in the cemetery of St. Andrew, Bothall, on the day the said Robert was baptized, and it is twenty-one years ago at the same feast of St. George.
John de Offeley says the same, and knows it because his father (?) married Avice his stepmother at the feast of All Saints before the said Robert’s birth; it is twenty-one years ago, and that marriage can never depart from his memory.
Bernard Tuket of Wodhorn ……….. says the same, and knows it because Sir John de Gretham, chaplain, at Christmas ……. was instituted perpetual vicar of the church of St. Edeline the Virgin, Wodehorn, and on Sunday before the Ascension following, the witness …... was at the vicar’s feast at Bothal with Robert Bertram, deceased, and then the said Robert (the petitioner) was 4 weeks old, and it is twenty-one years since Sir John was instituted.
Robert le Warenner says the same, and knows it because Robert his first-born son was born on the eve of St. George, and the said Robert on the morrow, and his son was 21 on the said eve last past.
Maurice de He ….. says the same, and knows it because Roger his brother whose heir he is, (died) on Whitsunday after the said Robert’s birth twenty-one years ago at next Whitsunday, and he made his homage to Robert Bertram, who said that he who ought to be his lord was aged 6 weeks.
William son of Maurice says the same, and knows it because on …… before the said Robert’s birth he came into England from parts across the sea, and on the morrow of St. George following, on which day the said Robert was baptized, John de Seton and he feasted at Bothal with Robert Bertram, and it is twenty-one years ago since he came into England.
Simon son of Richard de Pyndemore says the same, and knows it because as he came from Newbiggin to Pyndemore he saw his own house burning, and endeavoured to save his valuables (?) but could not for no one dared enter the house for the flames, and he lost many goods, and the same afternoon came his servant from Bothal announcing that Alice Gobyon, mother of the said Robert, had born a son, and on the morrow he was present when he was baptized, and Robert Bertram gave him an oak because his house was burnt, and there he saw John de Seton present, and it is twenty-one years since the burning of his house.
John del Side says the same, and knows it because on Sunday after the said Robert’s birth he fell from his horse between Morpath and Wheteworth, and it is twenty-one years ago, which he well recollects, for the small bone of his leg (?) (exilla tibie) being broken, he still limps.
William son of Richard de Essynden says the same, and he knows it because Ralph de Essynden, knight, took all his beasts and detained them for 10 marks which he owed him for the farm of his mill, and on the morrow of St. George he went to Sir Roger Bertram, rector of St. Andrew’s, Bothal, to borrow some money, and found him in the church whilst the said Robert was being baptized, and the said rector lent him 5 marks; it is twenty-one years ago since the taking of his beasts and he will all his life remember it.
John le Maresscall of Hayden says the same, and knows it because William his son was born four weeks after the said Robert, and will be 21 on Sunday before the Ascension next.
Robert de Balliolo says the same, and knows it because on the day of the said Robert’s birth as he came from Corbryg, robbers attacked him near Stanfordham with bows and arrows, &c. and killed his horse with an arrow, and he scarcely escaped their hands, and the same day reached Morpath on foot, and on the morrow went to Ellyngton by Bothall, where he heard his mass in the church and was present when the said Robert was baptized, and the robbers’ attack happened twenty-one years ago on the feast of St. George last.
