Writ to the escheator, whereas on 27 Nov. 26 Edw. I, the king commanded the sheriff of Oxford to assign to the said Joan, who had taken her oath not to marry without the king’s licence, her dower of the manor of Rolandrith, which the said Adam held of the king by serjeanty, and which was taken into the king’s hand because Philip Burnel, lately deceased, entered [upon it] without the king’s licence, and to send the same assignment to be enrolled in the chancery, and Henry de Thistelden then sheriff of that county, has asserted that he assigned the said dower, and prays remedy because 30 marks for three years after the said assignment are exacted of him as if he had not assigned the said dower; the king, although the assignment was not returned into the chancery, willing nevertheless to spare his carelessness this time, orders the escheator to enquire whether the said Henry made the said assignment or not &c., 22 Jan. 34 Edw. I.

Somerset, which the said Herbert held on the day he died of Baldwin de Caune of Flanders, and which by reason of the war with the king of France, on account of the minority of the said Herbert’s heir, was taken into the king’s hand because the said Baldwin was an alien, and Margery de Caune and Joan her sister, asserting that they are next heirs of the said heir, who died under age as is said, and of full age, have prayed for the manor to be rendered to them; the escheator is commanded to enquire of whom the said Herbert held the said manor, and who is his next heir &c. warning the said John to be present to show why the same should not be rendered to the said Margery and Joan, 26 Nov. 34 Edw. John de Meriet, being warned, came in person and said that the said Margery and Joan are not yet of full age, which he remembers by inquisitions taken ten years ago on the death of the said Herbert, and by other evidences it seems to him that the king ought not to render the manor to them until of full age.
