Inquisitions Post Mortem, Edward I, File 66

121. RICHARD DE CHELESHAM.
Writ, on the complaint of John de Ludham that whereas Richard de Chelesham, lately deceased, held immediately of the same John by knight’s service and held nothing of the priory of Bermundeseye, yet after the death of the said Richard his lands had been taken into the king’s hand by reason of the voidance of the said priory, 18 October, 21 Edw. I.
SURREY. Inq. made at Lamhyth on Monday before SS. Simon and Jude, 21 Edw. I.
Richard de Chellisham held nothing of the priory of Bermundeseye, but held certain lands &c. in Chellisham of John de Ludham by homage and knight’s service, rendering to him, when scutage runs, 16d., so that the wardship of his heir and lands pertains to the said John and not to the king by reason of the voidance of the said priory.
C. Edw. I. File 66. (1.)
122. HENRY DE SOBIRY alias DE SUBBIRI AND ALICE HIS WIFE.
Writ to the escheator, concerning the houses and rents in the city of London held by the said Henry de Sobiry and Alice his wife, as her dower of the inheritance of Stephen de Oistergate her first husband, which belonged to King Henry III by the forfeiture of John de Oistergate, son and heir of the aforesaid Stephen, and which the said king granted to the said Henry and his heirs, 30 May, 21 Edw. I.
LONDON. Inq. 3 July, 21 Edw. I.
A messuage opposite Oystergate, partly in the parish of St. Magnus and partly in that of St. Michael, held by the said Henry and Alice, by reason of the said Alice, of the heirs of Stephen de Oystergate, her first husband, rendering yearly to the abbot of Westminster 10d., to London Bridge 10s. and to the prioress and nuns of Clerkenewelle 10s.
A messuage in the parish of St. Magnus, sometime of John Hanin, similarly held, rendering yearly to the prior of Christ Church, Canterbury, 20s. and to the heirs of John Hanin 2 marks.
Alice aged 13, and Rose (Roesia) aged 10, daughters of Agnes daughter of the said Henry and Alice, are next heirs of the said Henry.
Writ (ad melius inquirendum), no mention being made in the previous inquisition of whom the houses and rents abovesaid were held, 21 July, 21 Edw. I.
Answer by the escheator that whereas it is asserted in the writ that King Henry III granted the tenements abovesaid by charter to the said Henry, it seems to him that it was not for him to enquire of whom they were held, when the king by his writ testifies that they are now held of the king, and this ought to be contained in King Henry’s charter.

After the death of the said bishop Robert de Reydon, now sub-escheator, re-seized it and delivered it to the bishop’s executors, who now hold it.

Afterwards the manor was demised by the king’s letters patent to Matthia, late the wife of William de Stokes until the lawful age of the heir of the said William de Stokes; and William Burdet for himself and Matthia his wife, was present at this inquiry and said that he had rendered seisin of the said manor to William, son and heir of William de Stokes, who now holds it.
