423. EDMUND THE KING’S BROTHER.
Writ to the escheator this side Trent, whereas the said Edmund on the contract of marriage between him and Lady Blanche, queen of Navarre, Campania and Brie, countess Palatine (Palentine), granted to her by letters patent, confirmed by the king, a third part of all his lands &c., and his whole right in the earldom of Ferrers, to hold in dower for her life; the escheator is commanded forthwith to deliver to the said queen what the said Edmund had in the said earldom, which is in the king’s hand, to hold in dower; and also to extend all the other lands &c. which the said Edmund held &c. in his bailiwick, and which are in the king’s hand by reason of the minority of his heir, that the king may assign her dower thereof to the said queen, 3 July, 25 Edw. I.
BUCKINGHAM. Inq. made at Little Browton by Eylesbury on Thursday the feast of the Assumption, 25 Edw. I.
Little Browton, Bebbegrave, Weston and Caldecote. The manor (extent given), including a free court at Weston every three weeks and two views of frankpledge yearly, held of the king in chief of the earldom of Leicester (service unspecified).
Endorsed: Sum of these extents 639l. 3s. 5d., from which 114l. 16s. 7d. are subtracted for the manors of Reddleye, Menstreworth and Shapewyk, demised by Sir Edmund for life. Sum remaining clear, 524l. 6s. 10d., whereof a third part is 174l. 15s. 7 1/4d.

Everle and Colynggeburn Earl’s alias Colynggeborn. The manors (extents given), tenure unspecified.
DORSET. Inq. Thursday after St. Katharine, 26 Edw. I.
Schapewyke. The manor (extent given), including a fair (nundine) on the feast of St. Bartholomew, and church-scot (cheresetto) of 60 hens and 20 cocks on the feast of St. Martin, held of the king in chief for 1 1/2 knight’s fee, and granted by the said Edmund to Peter de Champayne for life for 30l. yearly.
Schapewyke. Three parts of a knight’s fee are held by Peter de Champayne; 1/4 knight’s fee is held by Richard de Haveringes; and 1/2 knight’s fee is held by John de la Granette; all by service of scutage.
No advowson of a church pertains to the said Edmund in the county.
WARWICK. Extent, Wednesday before St. Bartholomew, 25 Edw. I.
Kenleworthe. The castle and mill with the dams (cum bayis), meadow land with moor, a park, herbage and pannage of a foreign wood, 20 marks assised rent, and pleas &c. of courts worth a mark, tenure unspecified. The custody of the castle exceeds the value of this extent by 100s. at least, besides works and the repair of the castle.
There is in the county a view of frankpledge of the honour of Leicester worth 20s. yearly.
LEICESTER. Extent (undated).
Leicester. A chief manor in the town which is not extended propter recaptionem, 320a. land, 44a meadow, a hide of pasture, 34l. 4s. 3 1/2d. rent of free tenants, free tenants outside the town rendering 39s. 6d. and 1lb. cummin yearly, two water-mills, and two windmills, with the ovens (furnis) of the town, pleas &c. of the court of Leicester and of the great foreign court of Leicester (magne curie Leyc’ de forinces’), and tolls of the market (de foro).
Hynkele. A manor (extent given), including pasture called Scydleye, an oven and tolls.
Sculton [alias Shulton]. A manor (extent given), including the park of Tolowe [alias Tholawe], which is not extended because the earl’s bailiff has all his animals there at his will.
Dersford. A manor (extent given), including a park.
Sir Edmund paid from the manor of Leicester 29l. 17s. 5 1/2d. in ancient alms.
Leicester. The forest, which is worth 10l. a year.
Tenures unspecified.
Endorsed: Memorandum of 40 marks which are rendered yearly from the manor of Gunthorp at the castle of Leicester and are not put in this extent.
STAFFORD. Inq. Sunday after St. Margaret, 25 Edw. I.
Lands and tenements in the foreign (in forinceco) of Newcastle, viz.—
[Newcastle.] A capital messuage which is the site of a castle not built, surrounded by a great preserve (magnus vivarius), and 4a. meadow and a wood near Newcastle.
Penkel. 8 bovates in demesne held by customers, 34 bovates held by 18 sokemen, 144 1/2a. held by the men of Penkel, a field called ‘le Colhokesfeld’ with 5a. meadow in Wateleg, 38 1/2a. on ‘le Stuwes’ held by the men of Newcastle, pasture called Gonemedemor, an enclosure (defensum), and a plot of meadow called ‘le dungmemor’ and 8a. villenage land held by 8 customers who do hay services jointly with 4 customers of Wlstaneton.
Wlstaneton. 8 bovates of land in demesne held by 18 men, 8 men who hold 10 bovates, 4 customers holding 4 bovates who ought to do similar works with the 8 customers of Penkel; waste lands enclosed and let (arrentatis) in the time of Ralph de Burgo and other bailiffs, 127a. held by the men of Wlstaneton and Newcastle, ‘le Gosegrene,’ a plot of land held by Ralph Wrchip, two meadows held by Ralph de Wlstaneton at will, 9 cottages, and a plot called ‘le Brademede’ held by Ralph Wrchip.
Scheperug. 4 bovates of land held by 6 customers, 115 1/2a. held by the men of Scheperug and Newcastle, 2 cottages and a water-mill.
Clayton. 16 bovates of land held by customers, 106 1/2a. held by Walter Stoyl and others, 5 cottages and a little plot called ‘le Dunamemor.’
Schelton. 10 1/2 ware of land containing 42 bovates held by sokemen, 61 1/2a. of assart held at will by the men of Schelton, 1a. held by Walter de Boterton, 2a. in the lord’s hand, a water-mill, 6 cottars (named), and a coal mine.
Hanley alias Hanleg, held in fee by Robert lord of Hanley, who renders 6s. yearly, and 1/2 mark for licence to enclose 31a. waste, and owes homage, wardship, marriage, relief, and suit every three weeks, and he shall find a man on foot in the castle for forty days at his own charges in time of war, but in time of peace he gives nothing for the said guard.
Schertelyme. 169a. of enclosed waste, part held by the lord of Boterton, rendering 6s. yearly, and part held by the township of Boterton rendering ….
Fenton, held in fee by Robert de Standon, rendering 7s. 4d. yearly and doing homage, and doing other services as the lord of Hanley above.
Longeton, held as above by Roger de Bogenholt, rendering 5s. yearly, and for his foreign (alienis) lands 11s. 6d.
Stafford. The burgesses render 12d. yearly on the feast of SS. Peter and Paul by the hands of the reeve of Penk[hull], and they used of old to render 2s. (?)
Cnotton alias Curtton. The manor held by Peter de Arderne, Ranulph de Bromley and Robert de Cnotton for a knight’s fee for …. yearly, and they owe homage, wardship, relief, suit &c.
Views of frankpledge are held twice yearly at the courts next after Michaelmas and Easter.
Perquisites of the court are worth 40s. yearly.
The ferry of ‘la mere’ is worth 40d. yearly.
The church of Stoke with its chapels, viz.:—Newcastle, Wytemor, Norton, Burwardeslym, and the chapel of St. Mary by the preserve (vivarium) of Newcastle, are in the lord’s gift (spectant ad donationem domini).
The church of Wlstaneton with the chapel of Kel are likewise in his gift.

A capital messuage, viz. the castle &c., two parks capable of sustaining 12 mares with three years’ progeny besides deer, pasturage &c. of the forest besides Wyresdale, twenty places of vaccaries and four places ‘sicsewarde,’ whereof each can support 60 beasts, in Wyresdale, and a water-mill on the river Lon of which John de Parkes holds a moiety for life without rent; the borough held by the burgesses at a yearly rent of 20 marks; and rents of the town in fee (extent given with names of tenants), including a tenement in ‘le Hehefeld’ and a tenement called ‘le Milnefeld.’

Halverston or Holverston in Furneys. The manor which is held by John de Huddeleston for life by the demise of Ingram de Gynes and Sir John de Lancastre, who render 10d. for the same for the guard of the castle of Lancaster.

Pulton. A carucate of land held by John le Gentyl, rendering 15s. yearly.

Oxclive. Three parts of a carucate of land held by William de Oxclive for homage and serjeanty of finding a carpenter in the castle of Lancaster with the lord’s carpenter, when necessary, and he shall receive a penny a day from the lord’s purse and does suit at the county (court) and wapentake and renders 9d. yearly instead of plough service (pro arrura) to the reeve of Skerton: the fourth part of the carucate is held by Sir William de Dakre and used to render 1/2 mark yearly, which Sir Edmund remitted to Sir Edmund de Dakre, father of the said William.
Bolton. 4 bovates of land held by [the prior of Lancaster (fn. 2) ] rendering 9s. 10d. to the chief lord yearly; 2 bovates of land held by William son of Simon, rendering 6s. yearly and doing suit at the county (court) and wapentake, and homage; 2 bovates of land held by John son of Ede by the like services; 12a. land held by the heir of Fraunceys, rendering 11s. 8d. yearly, and doing suit &c. as above; two fees, that of Durbald and that of Adam son of Gilbert, whereof a moiety of each is held by the prior of Lancaster, rendering 9s. 10d. yearly, and the other moiety held by Thomas Travers, which two fees owe suit (as above) and render 9s. 10d. yearly; 2 messuages and 39a. 1r. land held by Sir Edmund in demesne; and a water-mill which renders 40s. yearly.

A carucate of land held by Orm de Kelle and Eufeme his wife, rendering 13s. 4d. yearly; a carucate of land held by Lady Joan de Dak[re] and Richard de Riggemaydin, rendering 13s. 4d. yearly; and a carucate of land held by William de Burgo, rendering 8 1/2d. yearly and doing suit at the county (court) and wapentake.
Stappilterne. 3 carucates of land held by the abbot of Furneys rendering 40s. yearly; and a tenement called ‘Douneflat’ held by the same rendering 4s. yearly.

Hest. An escheat called Hest with a mill, worth 6l. 14s. 4d., and 8s. free rent of the same (libera firma ejusdem).
Overton. 40a. land held by Robert the reeve as reeve (in provostria), who is reeve in fee to do the service of that office, and owes homage and relief; a bovate of land held by John son of Robert son of Ricoun, rendering 8s. 1 1/2d. yearly; 2s. ‘coumale’ from Robert the reeve; 144a. land and other lands (extent given) in demesne, 10 bovates held in bondage, and 16d. ‘coumale’ from the same; 9 cottars; fisheries held by William de Oxclive, the keeper of Kokirham, and Hugh son of John, each rendering 2s. yearly; and 7d. yearly from the poor of Overton for shearing (?) (pro cissura).
Lanc[aster]. The church held in frank almoin by the prior of Lancaster, with its chapels and two manses (manciones), viz. Aldeclive and Neuton.
Nethirhessam. A carucate of land similarly held by the same prior.
[Unspecified.] A carucate of land similarly held by the leprous brethren of Lancaster, and a manse in Lancaster.
Lanc[aster]. A messuage and 12a. land held for homage by Philip Blound of Lanc[aster], who is carpenter in fee in the castle of Lancaster with the lord’s carpenter and ought to have (capiat) 1d. a day from the lord’s purse.
Orm de Kellet is bailiff in fee and appoints (facit) under him six serjeants, two in Furn[eys] and Kertemel, two in Lounesd[ale], and two beyond the wood. It is worth 100s. yearly.
Perquisites of the wapentake of Lounesd[ale] are worth 40s. yearly, perquisites of the demesne court 1 mark, and perquisites of the county (court) in the wapentake of Lounesd[ale], 20s.
Bolrun. 4 bovates of land held by Thomas de Bolrun for homage, doing suit at the county (court) at the wapentake, and rendering 5s. yearly; a bovate of land held by the same Thomas, rendering 3s. 8d. yearly; and 3 bovates of land held by the abbot of Kokirsaund, which owe 6s. 8d. yearly to the lord.

Hecham Fereris. A capital messuage, lands, rents &c. (extent given), including a fishery pertaining to the mills, 10s. 1d. rent of free tenants at Caldecote, and rents of customers at Caldecote and Chelviston, a market, a fair on the feast of St. Botulf, and pleas &c. of the foreign hundred, view of frankpledge, and halmote. And by charter of the said Edmund there are 20s. yearly for life in alms to Roger the chaplain celebrating divine service.
Rissinden. A grange &c. lands, rent, &c. (extent given), including 2 mills, a park, and pleas &c. of the court and halmote.

LEICESTER. Torp and Wymondham. A virgate of land in the fields which the earl had of the gift of Robert Payn.
Stapilford. Two parts of a bovate of land with the reversion of the third part, which he had of the gift of Ivo Stok; 18s. 9d. and 1 1/2lb. cummin worth 1d., rents of free tenants in the soke; and a court every three weeks worth 34s. a year.

Beltisford. Lands &c. and fishery in demesne, worth 6l. 8s., 10 bovates of land in villenage, cottagers, free tenants, and 8d. from those in his protection (de illis qui sunt in protectione sua), and a court worth 6d. yearly. And they beg to be allowed to give in aid at Michaelmas 1 mark as they have given before and have for long been accustomed to give.
Donyngton. Lands &c. in demesne worth 4l. 18s. 6d., 19 bovates of land in villenage, free tenants, cottagers, 15d. yearly from those in his protection, a court worth 3s. yearly, and a wood. And they beg to be allowed to give at Michaelmas 20s. in aid.

William son and heir of Richard de Walton, a minor and in the lord’s wardship, ought [to be] bailiff in fee of the crown and to hold the master serjeanty (magistram serjantiam) of the whole wapentake of Derby from the lord; and he ought to provide (habere) a bailiff on horseback, himself or another, and two underbailiffs on foot to perform the said office. There used to be a bailiff in fee to perform the office in the wapentake who had 2 bovates of land in Derby, which are now in the lord’s hand.
The lord has a bailiff at will (ad voluntatem) on horseback and one on foot to do the office in the wapentake; which office is worth 2 marks; and the perquisites of the wapentake are commonly worth 100s.

Gunthorp. The manor, held by John de Monte Forti, rendering 40 marks yearly to the said Sir Edmund, is now in the hand of Sir Edmund’s executors by reason of the minority of the heir of the said John.
