Inquisitions Post Mortem, Edward I, File 60

815. Peter Mauluvel alias Maulovel.
Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint of Robert le Cartewright of Gaynesburgh, that the escheator had ejected him from certain lands in Gaynesburgh of which the said Peter had enfeoffed him, asserting that the said Peter was not of sound mind (compos mentis), 13 Aug. 19 Edw. I.
Lincoln. Inq. Tuesday after St. Michael, 19 Edw. I.
Geynesburg. The said Peter when he enfeoffed the said Robert of the said lands was sufficiently of sound mind, but in what state he now is the jury are ignorant, because he remains in distant parts.
C. Edw. I. File 60. (1.)
816. John son of Robert atte Halle, of Navenby.
Writ to the sheriff of Lincoln to enquire whether the said John is an idiot, so that the wardship of his lands &c. in Navenby ought to pertain to the king, 28 Aug. 19 Edw. I.
Lincoln. Inq. made at Ancastre on the eve of St. Matthew, 19 Edw. I.
Navenby. 27a. land held of the lord abbot of Fischam by service of 4s. 9d. yearly, and 40d. to the Templars of Bruar' in alms.
The said John was of good memory until the age of 26, and then on account of a great sickness which he had for a quarter of a year, want of nursing (?) (custodie), hunger, and misery, whilst he lay in that sickness, he was not of good memory, and in no other manner: how it happened the jury know not unless by the will (gratia) of God: he is now 29 years of age. He held the said lands until the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last, when the king's escheator took them into the king's hand; a year after he was in that sickness, he sold 1a. land to John Knol, and 1a. to Thomas Godewyn and now holds 25a.
C. Edw. I. File 60. (2.)
817. Alice and Joan, daughters and heirs of Henry de Pidele.
Writ to the escheator, to take the proof of age of the said Alice and Joan, who were born at Pidele Athalamston, co. Dorset, and say that they are of full age, and seek their lands &c. which are in the wardship (custodia) of Joan their mother, by the king's grant, 12 Sept. 19 Edw. I.
Dorset. Proof of age taken at Dorkecestr', ... Dec. 20 Edw. I. (defaced.)
John de Muleborne says that the said Alice is 18, and this he knows because he has a daughter Isabel born a fortnight after in the king's second year; and the said Henry her father was his next neighbour. The said Joan is 14, which he knows for he was present with the said Henry at that time at a certain love-day (diem amoris) between the same Henry and the prior of Christchurch.
John Siffriwast says the same, and knows it because his son Simon was born a fortnight after the said Alice, and his wife Edith lifted her at the font in the king's second year; and he was at the said Henry's house when the said Joan was born in the king's sixth year.
Ralph de Rocheford says the same, for he knows of the age of the said Alice from his neighbours, and was present at the house of the said Henry for a love-day against the prior of Christchurch for a contention between them concerning common of pasture, about the feast of St. Margaret in the king's sixth year, on which day the said Joan was born.
Thomas Petevin says the same, for he was brought up from infancy with the said Henry and was there when the said Alice was born in March in the king's second year, and the said Joan was 14 at the feast of St. Margaret last, which he knows because he was in the said Henry's service when she was born.
John de Cheselborne says the same and knows it from neighbours who were present.
Philip Harang and Richard de Musters agree with John de Cheselborne.
John le Someter agrees, and Alice his wife lifted the said Joan from the font.
Geoffrey le Waleys agrees, and knows it from a certain writing made between him and the said Henry concerning 3½a. meadow which he then granted to the said Henry to farm.
Adam Friday agrees, and knows it because his daughter was then brought up with the said Henry's wife.
Nicholas Cole agrees.
William Jurdan says that the said Alice was 16 and more in March last, and Joan 14 on the feast of St. Margaret last.
C. Edw. I. File 60. (3.)
818. William son and heir of John de Hardredeshill alias Hardredeshull.
Writ to the escheator, to take the proof of age of the said William, who was born in the county of Lincoln, as he says, and seeks his lands &c. which are in the wardship of John de Monte Alto, 24 Oct. 19 Edw. I.
Return (from the escheator) that he had warned John de Monte Alto to be present, who came not, but a letter patent from him was shown, that he had restored the lands &c. to the said William, and quit claimed.
Lincoln. Proof of age, Monday before St. Edmund the King and Martyr, 19 Edw. I.
Thomas de Nevill, knight, says the said William was born at Scotton in co. Lincoln, and was 22 at Palm Sunday, 19 Edw. I, which he knows because he was in the service of Sir Philip de Nevill when the said John married Joan the said Philip's daughter and mother of the said William, and when the said William was born, and 18 years ago the said Philip died at Easter, 1 Edw. I, and then the said William was 4 years of age.
John de Bosco, knight, agrees, and knows it because the commonalty of the country (communitas patrie) say he is 22.
John Knicht of Nettelham says the same, and knows it because Robert de Scotton, chaplain, who lifted the said William from the sacred font, swore it to him in the word of God (in verbo dei).
Ralph de Stures of Faldingworth, Henry son of Simon de Wadingham, Alan le Clerk of the same, and John Oliver of Hibaldestowe agree with John Knicht.
William Kissing of Hibaldestowe agrees, for he was at the burial of Sir Philip de Nevill, grandfather of the said William, where he saw the said William and saw well that he was 4 years of age; in the same year he was impleaded at Lincoln by Ralph Northyby his neighbour.
Simon le Taillur of Appelby agrees, and knows it because Sir John father of the said William about Whitsunday, 2 Edw. I, when the sickness of which he died had hold of him, passed by his house in Appelby, when they spoke of his heir, and then it was said that he had a son and heir named William, who was 5 years of age at Palm Sunday then last past.
Walter le Cu of Crosseby agrees with John Knicht, and knows it by the relation of the country.
Richard del Hill of Scotthorn and Robert Beneyt of Wadingham, agree with John Knicht.
C. Edw. I. File 60. (4.)
819. Philip Paynel, brother and heir of John Paynel.
Writ to the escheator to take the proof of age of the said Philip, who seeks his inheritance, as well in the king's hand as in the wardship of Katherine Paynel, his mother, 5 Dec. 19 Edw. I.
Wilts. Proof of age made at Malmesbury on Sunday the feast of St. Swithin, 19 Edw. I. (defective.)
John de Cantebr' (?) says that the said Philip was born at Pyriton in the hundred of Stapel' on the day of the Assumption about the first hour, 53 Hen. III, and was baptized in the baptistry of St. Mary's church, Pyriton, by Richard then vicar, on the morrow at the morning hour (hora matutina). Philip Basset, uncle of the said Philip's mother, who was then at his manor of La Fasterne, being asked to be godfather sent his friends (familiares) Hugh de Courteney and John de Pyriton to lift him from the font and give him the name of the said Philip Basset, and Agnes then the wife of Roger de Writel' held him and was his godmother. He is certain of the time, for one John le Frie of Pyriton married one Emma at Hockday before the said Philip's birth, and the witness met him leading his wife with a great company and struck one William Champeneys, who was very abusive, heavily on the head with a staff, for which he was heavily amerced in the hundred (court) of Worth, and made great pecuniary amends.
Thomas le Teyeis says that on Friday of Whitsuntide, 50 Henry III, he married Hugina (?) de Chanu, and in the second year after a daughter Joan was born, now 22½, and the said Philip was born in the year following.
Thomas Malreward agrees with the above, except as to the hour which he does not recollect, and knows it because on the day of St. Andrew, 53 Hen. III, a son Andrew was born to him who now is 22 years of age and more.
William de Nevile agrees, for in 53 Hen. III, at Whitsunday was born to him a daughter named Margaret, who in her 15th year was married to one Henry de Stok, and in the following year bore a daughter named Alice who is now 6 years of age and more.
John le Frie agrees, for on the morrow of Hockday, 53 Hen. III, he married Emma his wife, who in the following year on the morrow of the Annunciation bore a daughter Alice; the said Philip was born at the (feast of the) Assumption following those nuptials.
Geoffrey de Marisco agrees, for he is a near neighbour and his son Robert was born at the feast of St. Peter ad Vincula, 53 Hen. III, and the said Philip at the feast of the Assumption following.
William Crups agrees, for one John Balle married Juliana his kinswoman in 53 Hen. III soon after Easter, and witness attended (ministravit) at the nuptials, and the said Philip was born at the (feast of the) Assumption following.
Philip de Forde agrees, adding that the aforesaid vicar who baptized the said Philip was born at Cirencestre, and that one John de Quernakere his special companion married one Emma de Hanedon before Whitsunday in 53 Hen. III, and the said Philip was born as abovesaid.
John de la Rochel' agrees, for the said John de Quernakre, his next neighbour, married his wife in the said year, as abovesaid.
Elias de Mandevil and Henry de la Burn agree ...
Nicholas de Garderoba ...
