Inq. Tuesday before St. Laurence, 18 Edw. I. Lydom. The manor was held by Robert de Boulers, sometime lord of Montegomeri all his time, as his other manors within the land of Montegomeri, pertaining to the liberty of Montegomeri; who died without heir of his body, as did also Baldwin his brother who succeeded him; after whose death the said manor with other members of Montegomeri came to the king's hand, and Wentlyana Thek, wife of the said Baldwin, was dowered of the manor of Lidom by the king; after her death the king conferred it upon a knight named William de Hautentot for his service, who wearied with war surrendered it to the king; and so it has always remained pertaining to the castle of Montegomeri until the king that now is, during his father's lifetime, conferred it upon Adam de Montegomeri for his service, but for what service he held it the jury know not. Thomas his firstborn son, aged 30 and more, is his next heir. Stocton. 3s. rent, held of Philip de Smethecotes; and 3s. rent similarly held were confiscated into the king's hand before the death of the said Adam, because he wished to have given them to Adam his younger son, and so they have remained. Inq. made by jurors of the hundreds of Kyngeston, Emelebrugg, Coppedethorn and Effyngheham, on Friday the feast of St. Thomas the Martyr, 18 Edw. I. Longeditton. A certain tenement was held by William de Brademere, father of the said Richard, of Robert le Tut, who married Alex(andra) daughter of Robert Arsic, rendering to him 25s., which tenement the said Robert held of the king in chief, rendering 10s. every 24 weeks at the castle of Dover; and the said Robert received the 25s. yearly, and did not acquit the said William of the said 10s., until the said William was in arrear 20 marks, and the constable of Dover distrained him for the same; the said William prayed the said Robert to acquit him as he was bound to do, but he refused, and the said William paid the said 20 marks; and since then the said William and Richard his son have rendered 10s. every twenty-four weeks up to this time at the Castle of Dover. The said Richard died in Easter week, 16 Edw. I. William his son, aged 16, is his next heir. Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint of Thomas de Gardinis, grandson of the abovesaid Alexandra, that the escheator believing that the above-said Richard held his lands &c. of the king because he paid the said 10s. for the guard (custodiam) of the king's castle of Dover, had taken the lands &c. into the king's hands; offering to pay the said rent as the abovesaid Robert and Alexandra, and her ancestors used to do; and asserting that the wardship of these lands &c. ought to pertain to him as next heir of the said Alexandra, 28 July, 18 Edw. I. |

Certain lands were held by Robert le Tute [alias de Tute] and Alexandra his wife of the king in chief of the inheritance of the said Alexandra, which William de Brademere held of them, rendering 25s. yearly whereof they rendered 10s. every 24 weeks for the guard of the castle of Dover; but after the death of the said Alexandra, the said Robert who held the said lands &c. by the courtesy of England, ceased the said payment, and the said William and Richard his son, for default of his acquittance, have paid the same by distraint of the bailiffs of the said castle. The said Thomas de Gardinis is next heir of the same Alexandra. |
