Writ to the sheriff of Surrey to enquire whether Arnold (Ernaldus), son of Richard de Tangbeleye, who has arraigned an assize of morte d'ancestor against Richard de Exon' and Walter de la Haye, concerning certain lands in Ireland of which the said John, his uncle, was seised of fee on the day he died, is next heir of the said John, as he says, or not, 16 July, 7 Edw. I.
Inq. made at Guildford in full county (court), Wednesday after St. James the Apostle, 7 Edw. I.
Arnold, son of Richard de Tangelye his elder brother, is next heir of the said John, who died seised in his demesne as of fee of certain lands &c. in Ireland.

340. Roger de Sancto Andrea, nephew and heir of Maud de Sancto Andrea.
Writ (missing).
Cambridge. Proof of age (undated and defective).
Ralph son of Fulk, knight, says that the said Roger is 22, which he knows by the relation of the said Maud, who died six years ago, and then told him the said Ralph was 16. He was born at Hengeston in co. Cambridge about the feast of All Saints.
John de Akeny, knight, says the same, and knows it because his brother Roger is of the same age.
Sayer de Rosey says the said Roger will be 22 the second or third day after All Saints, which he knows because he was in the wardship of the earl of Warenne, and received his land on the feast of St. Michael before, twenty-two years ago, and the said Maud who was his neighbour, gave him the report of the birth of the said Roger within eight days after.
Ralph de Dokeworth agrees, and knows it by the age of William his brother who was born the same week; and also through Walter, then vicar of Hensington, who has held the vicarage for twenty-two years.
Roger Barbedor agrees, for he was born in the same town on the feast of St. Martin in the same year, and they were always comrades; and he will be 23 on the feast of St. Martin next.
Robert Tristram agrees, and knows it because his sister Uriana had a son Robert who was 22 a little before St. Michael last.
William Erkebaud agrees, and knows it because ... he has a son Robert who was born on Sunday before the said feast of All Souls.
William de Exon', Robert Atteburi, Philip de Berkhamme, William Brun and Richard de Lammesse also agree.
Endorsed:—It is testified by the sheriff that James de Sancto Andrea as attorney for Alice de Sancto Andrea, sister and executor of Ralph de Sancto Andrea, to whom the king committed the wardship of the heir of the said Maud, said that the executors knew nothing why the king should not render the lands &c. to the said Roger.

Walkerne. The manor (extent given), held with the manor of Kinggestan, co. Somerset, and other manors, of the king in chief by service of 1½ knight's fee as the jury believe, of the barony of Launvaleya. Ralph de Hauvile has in mortgage twelve of the customary tenants, eleven holding ½ virgate each, and one holding 7a., with 12a. 1r. of the lord's demesne, for 100 marks received from him, to be paid to the said Geoffrey (sic) on Palm Sunday, 8 Edw. I, the bond whereof remains in the hands of the vicar of Walkerne, and if the money should be paid the lands, &c. should revert to the heirs of the said John de Burgo. Similarly one Geoffrey de Hauvile has in mortgage 2a. of the meadow for 60s. to be paid at the same day.

Rokingham. A messuage, and a free tenant called Nicholas de Eketon holding 2 carucates land by doing 1/7 knight's fee; and he held that manor as aforesaid, and the manors of Abindon, Shenle, Cleyndon (and) Lillinston of the king for 1 knight's fee.
Benifeud. The manor (extent given), except the tenement held of the king as aforesaid, held of the abbot of Peterborough (de Burgo), for 4 knights' fees. And the said Humphrey long before his death seven years ago delivered to the queen, the king's mother, the whole manor of Benifeud wholly for her life.
