She held in dower:
Lechlade, the manor and the advowsons of the priory and the church, of the king in chief; annual values in assize rents payable by equal parts at Easter and Michaelmas £30 11s.11 1/2d., demesne lands, meadow and pasture £34 7s.11d., perquisites of court 33s.11 1/4d., advowson of the priory £31 and of the church £10.
Barnsley, the manor, of the king in chief; assize rents £12 8s.7d., demesne lands, pasture and meadow at farm 66s.11 1/4d. and perquisites of court 29s.5 1/2d.
Miserden, the manor and advowson, of the king in chief by knight service; assize rents 112s.9d., demesne lands and pasture 44s.2d., perquisites of court 13s.4d. and advowson 10 marks.
Siddington, the manor, of the king in chief by knight service; assize rents 100s., demesne lands, meadow and pasture 33s.4d.

Colesborne, half a knight’s fee formerly held by Robert Gyfforth in right of Elizabeth his wife, value 20s.

All the premises were part of the grant of Edward III by letters patent [CChR, 1327–41, pp.2–5] to Edmund earl of Kent and the heirs of his body. From him they descended to his son Edmund and then to John, brother of Edmund, whose wife Elizabeth was. John’s heir was Joan his sister, late princess of Wales. From her the right to the reversion descended to her son Thomas, and then to his sons Thomas and Edmund, successive earls of Kent. The heirs are now Edmund earl of March, son of Eleanor countess of March, first sister of Thomas and Edmund; Joan duchess of York, wife of Henry Lescrop, knight, the second sister; Margaret widow of John late earl of Somerset, the third sister; Eleanor wife of Thomas earl of Salisbury, the fourth sister; and Elizabeth wife of John Neville, knight, the fifth sister.
Elizabeth died on 6 June last. The ages of the heirs are Edmund 20, Joan 28, Margaret 26, Eleanor 24 and Elizabeth 23 years.

She held the manor of Pirbright in dower. It was granted by Edward III to Edmund earl of Kent and descended to John her husband. The reversion was to Joan princess of Wales and descended to the five heirs as above [no.861]. It is held of the king in chief by knight service, annual value £4 payable by equal parts at Easter and Michaelmas.
By a fine of 1363 [CP 25(1)/230/54, no.23] Eustace Dabriggecourt and Elizabeth his wife granted the manors of Woking, Sutton and Bagshot to Edward prince of Wales and Joan his wife, from the dower of Elizabeth. Elizabeth wife of Eustace was Elizabeth widow of John earl of Kent and Joan princess of Wales was the sister of John. Joan gave them to Thomas earl of Kent her son and Alice his wife and Alice still holds.

In the chancery of Richard II she was given in dower a rent of £4 16s.8d. from the fee farm of £8 from the manor of Iden. The manor was part of the grant of Edward III to Edmund earl of Kent and descended to her husband, and the reversion descended as above [no.861].

875 MARGARET HILLARY

She was one of the sisters and heirs of Nicholas Lord Audley but she did not hold in free tenure. Long before the death of her husband Roger Hillary, knight, they granted half the manors of West Raddon and George Nympton, half of a quarter of the manor of Kilmington and half of 6s. rent in East Anstey and West Anstey by a fine of 1391 [CP 25(1)/289/56, no.225], shown to the jurors, to Robert bishop of London, Reynold Grey of Ruthin, knight, John Markham, John Woderove, Hugh de Holes, knight, and the heirs of Hugh. John Woderove died. The others granted the premises to her by an indenture to hold for 40 years from 14 Feb. 1401, with the provision that if she died within the 40 years the grant would expire and the premises revert to them. The bishop and John Markham died.
She died holding the premises on 24 April 1411. James de Audele, son of John, son of John, son of Joan her sister, is her heir and aged 12 years and more.

By a fine of 1393 recorded in 1396 [CP 25(1)/290/57, no.293] Roger Hillary, knight, and Margaret then his wife granted the reversion of the half manors of Nether Stowey, Downend, Puriton, Woolavington, Stockland Bristol, Crandon and Honibere and of 1 messuage and 40 a. in Woolston which Elizabeth widow of Nicholas de Audeley, knight, held for life of the inheritance of Margaret to William Stretehay, Thomas Thikenes, Philip Stretehay and Richard Snede and the heirs of Thomas to hold for the term of the life of Margaret, with remainder after her death to John son of John Tochet of Markeaton, knight, Thomas Tochet, parson of Mackworth, John Cokayn the uncle, John son of Richard Tochet of Mackworth and William Pakeman and the heirs of John son of John. The fine and royal licence [CPR 1391–6, p.272] were shown to the jurors.
Elizabeth died. Thomas Thikenes, Philip and Richard held the premises whilst Margaret lived, William Stretehay having died before the fine was recorded. They should now remain to John Cokayn and John son of Richard Tochet, the others having died.
Nether Stowey, Downend and Puriton are held of the king in chief, annual values £4 40s. and 60s., Stockland Bristol of the master of St. Mark’s, Bristol, of his manor of Stockland Bristol by a rent of 1d. Of whom Woolavington, Crandon, Honibere and Woolston are held is unknown; annual values 10 marks, 40s., 50s. and 20s.

By another fine of 1393 and 1396 [CP 25(1)290/57, no.294] Roger Hillary and Margaret granted the reversion of a third part of the castle and manor of Redcastle to the same feoffees. It is held of Thomas Harecourt by a rent of 1d.; annual value of the third part £10.
As sister and heir of Nicholas Lord Audley she held half the manors of Ford and Newport and a third part of the manor of Edgmond under the fine of 1391 and indenture as above [no.875].

By one of the fines of 1393 and 1396 as above [no.878] Roger Hillary and Margaret granted the remainder of half the castle, manor, vill, commote and lordship of Newport in Cemais and of 2 messuages, 3 mills, 12 carucates, 80 a. meadow, 270 a. wood and 20s.1d. rent in Eglwyswrw, Fagwyr Goch alias Redwalls, Cilrhedyn and Fishguard in South Wales, held of the king in chief, to the same feoffees, annual value 40 marks.
As sister and heir of Nicholas Lord Audley, under the fine of 1391 as above [no.875], she held a third part of the manors of Monnington on Wye and Dilwyn. Dilwyn is held of the king of the duchy of Lancaster by knight service, annual value 10 marks, and Monnington on Wye of Richard earl of Warwick of the lordship of Colwyn, annual value £10.

By one of the fines of 1393 and 1396 as above [no.879; CP 25(1)/290/57, no.294] concerning half the manors of Audley, Chesterton and Endon, half of a messuage in Newcastle under Lyme, half of a half of the manor of Norton, half of a third part of the manors of Balterley and Alstonefield, a third part of the manors of Betley, Tunstall and Horton and of the park of Heighley, and 30s. rent in Heighley, Betley, Audley and Over Longsdon, Roger Hillary and Margaret granted to William Stretehay and the other feoffees half the manor of Chesterton, half the messuage in Newcastle under Lyme, 2 parts of half the manor of Audley, the half of a half of the manor of Norton, the third part of the manor of Tunstall, 2 parts of the third parts of the manor of Horton and of the park of Heighley, and a third part of the 30s. rent, to hold to them and the heirs of Thomas Thikenes during the life of Margaret. They also granted that the reversion of the half manor of Endon, of the third part of the manor of Betley, of a third part of the half manor of Audley, of a third of the third part of the manor of Horton and of the park of Heighley, of 2 parts of the 30s. rent, and of half of the third part of the manor of Balterley, all of which Elizabeth widow of Nicholas de Audeley, knight, held in dower, of the half of a third part of the manor of Alstonefield, which Nicholas de Stafford, knight, held for life, and of the half manor of Bradwell, which John Marsshall held for life, all of the inheritance of Margaret, should remain to the feoffees and the heirs of Thomas Thikenes during the life of Margaret. After her death all would remain to John son of John Tochet of Markeaton, knight, Thomas Tochet, parson of Mackworth, John Cokayn the uncle, John son of Richard Tochet of Mackworth and William Pakeman, and the heirs of John son of John.
Elizabeth and Nicholas Audley died.
The manors of Audley, Balterley and Tunstall are held of Lord Furnivall, Betley and Heighley of the heir of John de Betteley, Horton and Over Longsdon of the heir of William Mere, Endon of the earl of Stafford, and Bradwell, Chesterton, Alstonefield and the messuage in Newcastle under Lyme of the duchy of Lancaster.
Annual values, the half manor of Audley £20, half of Chesterton £4, half of Bradwell 20s., half of Endon 60s., half the messuage in Newcastle under Lyme 13s.4d., half of a half of Norton 60s., half of a third of Balterley 30s., half of a third of Alstonefield 20s., third of Betley 40s., third of Tunstall 100s., third of Horton £4 and third of the park of Heleigh 13s.4d.
Margaret held a third part of the manor of Audley, half of that of Chesterton, a half of a half of the manor and lordship of Norton and half of a third part of Alstonefield for life by the grant of John son of John Tochet of Markeaton, knight, with remainder to Thomas Tochet, parson of Mackworth, now deceased, John Cokayn the uncle, John son of Richard Tochet and their heirs and assigns. Roger and Margaret attorned to them. The parts of manors are held as above; annual values, third part of Audley £10, half of Chesterton 100s. and half of Norton 10 marks.
She also held for life 1 messuage, 1 toft and 1 carucate in Bentley by the grant of William Cressich alias Benteley to Roger and herself for their lives with reversion to John son and heir of William, now aged 8 years and more. They are held of the king by the service of finding a man to keep the king’s hay of Bentley in Cannock forest, annual value 20s.
She died on 27 April last. Heir, aged 14 years and more, as above.

He held the manors of Senders and Netherhall in Barningham in his demesne in fee tail by a fine of 1329 [CP 25(1)/219/69, no.13].
Senclers manor comprises the site, 1 1/2 a. by metes and bounds, annual value 6d.; 1 enclosed croft annexed of 3 a., 18d.; 1/2 a. in 3 a. belonging to the manor of ‘Felioures’ in fee simple not included in the entailed lands, 2d.; 1 enclosed meadow of 5 a. called ‘Knytesmedowe’ with external pasture, 10s.; 113 a. arable in various fields both in demesne and in escheated villein lands at 4d. the a., of which 7 a. are above ‘Knythtesmedowe’, 7 a. in 3 parcels to the east at ‘Alstonsyk’, 9 a. 3 roods at ‘Shirlwaterwong’, 3 a. at ‘les Fyrses’, 11 a. at ‘Netherbradewong’, 7 a. at ‘Myddelbradewong’, 5 a. at ‘Overbradewong’, 2 a. at ‘Wolphamesbush’, 30 a. at ‘Nethermere’, 3 a. at ‘Rolftoft’, 20 a. of villein land formerly of Christine Skynnere and ‘Wardys’ and in various parcels 15 a. 1 rood as appears by the extent; assize rents of free tenants by the rental, 21s.4d.; 1 free fold without number (sine numero) with pasture of heath, 10s.; various liberties, ‘Taury’ and ‘Verry’, 8d.; and 1 court of the free tenants nil. The manor is held of the abbot of Bury St. Edmunds in socage, service unknown.

All died before Isabel Coleshull, who became Isabel Crane, and she died holding them on 1 Oct. last. Richard son of Robert Inkepenne, her son, is next heir, now aged about 21 but still in the king’s ward as a minor.
