He held a service rent of 6d. from 1 messuage, 1 curtilage and 3 ferlings in West Millbrook in the parish of North Molton, which premises he had granted to Thomas Tronmere and John Tronmere to hold for their lives, rendering this sum at Michaelmas. The premises are held of Ela widow of Richard de Sancto Mauro, knight, his father, of the manor of North Molton by fealty and suit of court there twice yearly, annual value 13s.4d. He also held the reversion of them after the deaths of the Tronmeres.
He died without heirs of his body. John his brother and next heir is aged 28 years and more.

Ela wife of Richard, father of Richard, held in dower 1 messuage and 4 shops in Broad Street in Broad Street ward in the parish of St. Peter le Poor with reversion to Richard. By an indenture, dated at ‘Lovellesmersshe’ in Somerset on 10 Oct. 1401 and shown to the jurors, she granted all her rights in them to Richard on certain conditions. With them she granted 2 knight’s fees in Milton Clevedon by Bruton, formerly held by Thomas Lovell, 1 1/2 fees in Sparkford and Badgworth, held by John Lord Lovel and Holand, 1/2 fee in Discove held by Thomas Caremele and Joan Tottenesse, 1/4 fee in Foxcombe held by John Hugin, the rents and services of all these fees and also of Richard de la Mare, William Northlode and Richard Juwell for their holdings in Chilton Foliat and Westbury, and the rents and services of George Bithemore for 11 1/2 hides in ‘Alwardeston to hold for her life, but if Richard should die during her lifetime then all should revert to her for life. If in future she should stay in London then she should have the messuage at her pleasure, when not there Richard should have it. The witnesses to the indenture were William Sturton, John Mannyngford, John Fauntleroy, Robert Leddred, Thomas Barwe and others.
So Richard held the London premises of the king in free burgage, as all London is held, annual value 4 marks.

He held in his demesne as of fee:
Castle Cary, the manor with the advowson of Ansford, except for all the lands in Pitcombe and Cole, formerly parcel of the manor, which Ela widow of Richard, his father, holds in dower, annual value of these lands £20. The manor and advowson are held to himself and his heirs under a fine of 1358 [CP 25(1)/287/45, no.541] by which John Derby, Walter de Polton and John de Westbury, chaplain, granted them to Nicholas de Sancto Mauro and Muriel his wife, the heirs of their bodies and the right heirs of Muriel. He was the son of Richard, son of Nicholas and Muriel. The annual value of the manor is £101 17s.10d., including £80 in rents of tenants payable by equal parts at the four terms.
Road, the manor and advowson, of Walter Rodeney, knight, by knight service, annual value £20, including £18 in rents payable by equal parts at Easter and Michaelmas.
Shepton Montague, 3 messuages, 1 curtilage, 360 a. and 1 virgate arable, and 8 a. meadow, of the heir of John late earl of Salisbury by fealty, annual value 50s.
Charlton Mackrell and Charlton Adam, 2 messuages, various curtilages and gardens, 203 a. arable, 8 a. meadow and 12 a. pasture, of Nicholas Poulet by a rent of 12d., annual value 55s.2d.
From Shepton Montague and the Charltons Richard de Sancto Mauro, senior, granted to Walter Silvayn, who is still living, a rent of 30s. for life, payable by equal parts at Easter and Michaelmas; and Richard the son granted to John Chevent a rent of 40s. for life, payable by equal parts at the four principal terms. The charters making these grants were shown to the jurors.
Jointly with Mary his wife, who survives him, he held 160 a. arable in Stoke Lane by the grant of William Loryng, canon of Salisbury, and Robert Leddred to them and their heirs with remainder to his right heirs. They are held of Maurice Russell, knight, by fealty, annual value 113s.4d.
Jointly with John Lovell and others he held 1 messuage with curtilage, 25 a. arable, and 4 a. meadow in Clanville by the grant of Walter Blancpayne, who had held them time out of mind, to them and their heirs, of Richard and his predecessors of his manor of Castle Cary by a rent of 5s., annual value 13s.4d.

Alice her daughter, aged 2 days at her death, is heir to this holding.
She held the manor and advowson of Road, allotted to her in chancery in dower of Richard, with reversion to Alice. They are held of Walter Rodeneye, knight, by knight service, annual value £26.
She held 50s. service rent from the manor of Castle Cary, allotted to her in dower from the free holdings of Richard, exceeding double the value of his holdings elsewhere, and extinguished by her death, being held of no one because a rent charge.
She died on 25 July. John de Broughton, her son and heir, is aged 1 1/2 years.

Long before her death she held the manor of Castle Eaton and the advowson jointly with Richard by the grant of William Loryng and John Gregory of Bruton. She granted it by indenture, dated at London on 24 May 1409, except for wards, marriages and reliefs, to Robert Andrewe and Margaret his wife for their lives for a rent of £10. It is held of the earl of Stafford by knight service.
She died on 25 July. Alice her daughter and next heir was aged 2 days at her death. John Broughton is her son and heir general, aged 1 1/2 years.

Hoo in Wootton by Bedford, 2 parts of the manor, of the heirs of Robert Totenham by knight service as parcel of the barony of Bedford, annual value nil because John Trailly, knight, formerly lord of the manor, granted to John Herteshorn and Alice his wife a rent of £6 for their lives from this manor by his charter dated at Northill on 30 Sept. 1392.
Ravensden formerly called Trayles, 2 parts of the manor, annual value 13s.4d. and no more because Reynold Trailly, formerly lord of the manor, granted John Herteshorn, esquire, 5 marks yearly from it for life by his charter dated at Northill on 7 Aug. 1401. Of whom it is held is unknown.

By her charter dated at Dunton on 12 July 1407 she granted the manor and lordship of Dunton with all its members, fees, advowsons, liberties and franchises, to Henry Beaumond, Lord Beaumont, William Bourgchier, John Haward and Gerard Braybrok, knights, John Rome, clerk, John son of William Doreward, David Holbeck, Robert Rykedon, John Whitebi, clerk, Robert Neuport, Richard Baynard, Thomas Remys, Richard Fox, John Basset of Chishall, John Dabelat, John Eldres, Hubert, parson of Diss, Simon Cisterne, John Whiteside, clerk, William Aleyn of Cambridgeshire, Peter de Boxstede of Essex and John Ailward, chaplain, and their heirs and assigns, and they still hold it. It is held of the barony of Swanscombe, annual value nil because Gilbert Talbot, knight, Lord Talbot, deceased, granted Isabel his wife £40 yearly at Michaelmas for life from it, and John Deverose, knight, deceased, granted Reynold ap Reignold 8 marks yearly from it payable by equal parts at Lady Day and Michaelmas.
She died on 11 May last. Humphrey her son and next heir is aged 11 years and more.

Dorstone, the castle and manor, of the same Edmund earl of March of the lordship of Clifford by knight service, annual value 20 marks.
Newton in the Welsh March, the manor, of the same earl and lordship, annual value 20s.
Bishopstone, a quarter of the manor with the advowson, of the bishop of Hereford by knight service, annual value 40s.
Whitchurch Maund, the manor, of whom and by what service is unknown, annual value 40s.
For the term of 70 years she held certain lands, tenements, woods, rent and services in Whitchurch Maund and Maund Bryan by the grant of William Deveros, deceased, annual value 40s.
She died on 6 May last. Humphrey her son and heir is aged 10 years. It is not possible to enter the castle of Lynhales because it is forcibly held by certain lieges whose names are unknown. [The last sentence is written on the dorse of the writ].

She held in her demesne in fee tail the manors of Henham, annual value £13 10s., Roydon, annual value £9 4s.6d., Dunmow, annual value £9 20d., and Ashdon, annual value £10, with the knight’s fees and advowsons belonging to them, of the barony of Baynard’s Castle by knight service, by the grant to her and her heirs by Walter Fitzwalter, knight, with remainder to his right heirs, by John Cobham, knight, deceased, and John Reymes.
Similarly she held the manor of Burnham to herself and the right heirs of Walter of the king of the same barony, annual value £40.
She died on 10 May last. Humphrey her next heir is in the king’s ward and was aged 10 years on 18 Oct. last.

SOMERSET. Inquisition. Yeovil. 30 Nov.
Owing to the minority of John, son and heir of Richard Tomer, 1 messuage, 60 a. arable, 10 a. meadow, 8 a. wood and 31 a. pasture in Henstridge, held of the heir of John late earl of Salisbury and by him, also a minor in the king’s ward, of the king in chief by knight service, came into the king’s hands, annual value £4. On 18 Jan. 1401 the king, by letters patent [CPR 1399–1401, p.406] shown to the jurors, granted custody to the value of 100s. to Isabel Thorley until the full age of the heir of Richard. Thomas Thorley and Isabel granted the custody to Alice widow of John Thomer and William Carent.
John the son of Richard died under age on 26 Sept. 1407. Edith, then aged 10 years and more, was his sister and heir. She died on 25 July last. Alice wife of William Carente is her aunt and heir, being the sister of Richard her father, and aged 30 years and more.

BUCKINGHAM. Inquisition. Stony Stratford. 16 March.
By the grant of Edward III [CPR 1367–70, p.242] to John Nowers, knight, Maud his wife and the heirs of his body, he held in his demesne in fee tail the manor and advowson of Gayhurst, except for the third part which Alice widow of John held in dower by assignment of Richard II. It is held of the king in chief as half a knight’s fee; annual value of the two parts £6 6s.8d.
Robert Archer, sometime rector of Gayhurst, by his charter dated at Stoke Goldington on 19 Nov. 1364 granted the manor of Stoke Goldington to John and Maud Nowers and the heirs of their bodies, the heirs of his body and his right heirs. Maud died without heirs by John. He married Alice and they had issue Amery, Grace, Agnes and Joan. Joan married Robert Nevyll. At his death Amery held two parts of the manor of the king of the honour of Peverel as a quarter of a knight’s fee, annual value £6. Owing to the death of John Nowers and the minority of his heir the manors came into the king’s hands and so remain.
Amery died on 20 Dec. 1407. Grace, Agnes and Joan, wife of Robert Nevyll, are his heirs, aged 19, 16 and 15 years and more.

575 GRACE SISTER OF AMERY NOWERS

BUCKINGHAM. Inquisition. Newport Pagnell. 17 May.
On the day that she took the religious habit and on the day that she was professed Grace, sister of Amery Nowers, held a third part of two parts of the manor of Gayhurst in fee tail, and jointly with her two sisters in fee tail the advowson of Gayhurst, by the grant of Edward III to John Nowers, knight, their father, Maud his wife and the heirs of his body with remainder to the king. The manor was held of the king in chief as half a knight’s fee; annual value of the third part of two parts 26s.8d.
Similarly she held a third part of two parts of the manor of Stoke Goldington and of the advowson by the grant of Robert Archer, sometime rector of Gayhurst, to John and Maud and the heirs of his body, of the king of the honour of Peverel as a quarter of a fee, annual value of a third part of two parts 24s.
Maud died without heirs by John. He married Alice who survives him having had issue Amery, Grace, Agnes and Joan. Grace was professed in St. Giles [in the wood, Flamstead] in Bedfordshire on 21 April last. Joan wife of Robert Nevyll, her sister and next heir, is aged 16 years.

He held in his demesne as of fee 1 messuage and 1 fardel (quatrona) in Northampton of the abbot of Crowland and of Robert Mawdeby, service unknown, annual value 6s.8d.
He died on 16 May last. William son of John Comberton son of William Comberton, brother of John father of James, is his cousin and next heir, aged 6 years and more.

He held a third part of the manor of Tottenham in his demesne as of fee of the king in chief as a ninth part of a knight’s fee, annual value £18.
He held lands and tenements in Shoreditch and Hoxton in his demesne in fee tail by the grant of Robert Comberton and William Cressewyk to him and the heirs of his body, with remainder failing such heirs to John son of William Comberton and his heirs. Of whom they are held and by what service is unknown; annual value £6 13s.4d.
He married Anne, who survives him, and died on 16 May without heirs of his body. Heir as above.

He held in his demesne in fee tail a tenement called ‘le Hood’ in the parish of All Hallows the Great at the Hay in the Ropery, which John his father left to him by his will enrolled in the hustings on 11 Feb. 1398. John held it by purchase from John de Braughing by his charter enrolled in the hustings of common pleas on 6 May 1381 granting it to him and his heirs, with successive remainders to William son of William Comberton, his brother, and his heirs, Joan, Petronilla and Agnes, sisters of William son of William, and their heirs, John Comberton son of William, brother of John Norhampton, and the right heirs of John Norhampton.
John died. James entered the tenement and held it and died without heirs of his body. William son of William died without heirs of his body. Petronilla also died. Agnes and Joan survive, aged 28 and 16 years and more and in accordance with the will it should remain to them. Its annual value is 100s.
He also held to himself and the heirs of his body two tenements in the parish of St. Nicholas Shambles in Pentecost Lane, with remainder failing such heirs to the prior and convent of the Charterhouse to hold in perpetual alms, as appears by his will, annual value £10.
All are held of the king in free burgage.
He died on 16 May, heir as above.

BERKSHIRE. Inquisition. Reading. 22 June.
He held for life the manor of Shottesbrook, the advowsons of two chantries there, 2 virgates in Waltham St. Lawrence, 104 a. arable and 3 roods of heath in Binfield and 10 a. meadow in Cookham, by the grant by royal licence [CPR 1405–8, p.336] of William son and heir of Lawrence Trussell, by his indenture shown to the jurors. The premises remain to Isabel widow of Fulk, William Mosse, parson of Lamport, who are still living, and Thomas Chelrey, deceased, to them and their heirs on certain conditions.
He held the manor of Eaton Hastings with the advowson to himself and his heirs by Margaret his late wife by a fine of 1371–2 [licence, CPR 1370–4, p.118; CP 25(1)/12/71, no.5], between William Trussell of Kibblestone, knight, and Fulk and Margaret, made with royal licence, to them and their heirs with remainder to William Trussell, knight, and his heirs. Margaret died without heirs by Fulk, and the reversion was therefore to William son of Lawrence Trussell, kinsman and heir of William Trussell of Kibblestone, knight, he being the son of Lawrence, son of Warin, brother of John father of William Trussell. Afterwards William son of Lawrence granted the reversion by royal licence, as above, to Isabel, William Mosse and Thomas Chelrey to hold with the manor of Shottesbrook. Fulk attorned to them.
Shottesbrook and the chantries are held of the king in chief by the rent of a pair of gilt spurs, annual value 8 marks. Waltham St. Lawrence, Binfield and Cookham are not held of the king in chief but of whom and by what service is unknown, annual values 7s., 20s. and 10s. Eaton Hastings with the advowson is held of the king in chief as one knight’s fee, annual value £20.
He died on 24 May last. Juliana widow of Richard Vernon of Harlaston, knight, is his sister and heir, aged 60 years.
