WARWICK. Assignment of dower made at Shoteswelle, Wednesday in Easter week, 15 Richard II, to the said Joan formerly wife of Robert le Fitzwyth, in the manor of Shoteswelle. The site of the manor from the gate called Wayzerszate to the north corner of the sheephouse, thence to le Fysschewereheved, thence to le Claper towards the east and from the grange to the last part of the croft called le Hariottes on the south. Rents and services of John Calewdon and Elizabeth his wife, Henry Boune and Margery his wife and Thomas Geydyton. Field-names given: Hornymorehulle, Inlefoulelake, le Wryzert, Chapelforlong, le Merethorne, Bytwenethebrokes, Horsmor, Haggethorne, the Hullymedewe, Myddelheytegoodes and the Inmedewe and land by le Berywey and by Warmyntonwey.

Field-names given: Larkehull, le Mullemedewe and le Carrepece. A rent of 1 lb. pepper from the tenement late of John Hockeley.

He held no lands etc. of Edward III in the county on the day of his death, but he held the under-mentioned messuages.
Plympton. 2 messuages, held of … in socage by service of 1d. rent yearly.
He died on 13 October, 42 Edward III, without heir of his body. Adam Chubbe alias Adam Coker, aged 40 years and more, is his next heir, to wit, son of Henry Chubbe brother of Gregory his father.
Ever since his death Robert atte Mers… has occupied the messuages and taken the issues and profits thereof.

The said James was seised of the under-mentioned curtilage etc. and knight’s fee in his demesne as of fee on the day of his death. They ought by right to have been seized into the king’s hands after his death because he held other manors etc. of the king in chief in the county, but they have not yet been so seized.
Cryditon. A curtilage and a virgate of land.
Est Raddon. One knight’s fee, which Hugh Waleys held of him for one complete fee.

OXFORD. Inq. (indented) taken at Oxford, Thursday after the Nativity of St John the Baptist, 17 Richard II.
Gilbert Wace, knight, and John Salveyn were formerly seised in their demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Aldebury, and long before 50 Edward III granted the same to John Baldyngton and Alice his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of Alice. John and Alice were seised accordingly, and had issue a son named William, who is still living. Alice survived the said John, and was seised of the manor and advowson as above when she died.
She was seised of the remaining under-mentioned messuages and lands in her demesne as of fee on the day of her death.
Aldebury. The manor, with the advowson of the church thereof, held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Little Baldyngton. A messuage and 70a. land, tenure not known, but not held of the king.
Denton. 3 messuages and 4 virgates of land, tenure not known, but not held of the king.

A messuage and 60a. land, held of the heirs of Richard Louthes by service of 8s. rent yearly and suit of court every three weeks; a messuage with an adjacent croft in le Northende, held of John Hauvyle by service of 2s. yearly; a messuage and a virgate of land in le Southende, held of the same John by service of 1 lb. pepper and 9d. yearly for the keeping of the ward of Wyndesore, and by suit of court every three weeks; a messuage called Wardesplace and 6a. land in le Southende, held of Hugh atte Well by service of a pair of gloves yearly and suit of court as above; 2a. meadow, held of William atte Well by service of a red rose yearly; a messuage and 2 virgates of land, held of the prior of the hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England by service of 5s. yearly; and a toft and 12a. land, held of the prioress of Littelmore by service of 6s. rent yearly.
Crowell. A messuage and a virgate of land, held of Humphrey de Stafford, knight, services not known.
Chelworth. 4 virgates of land, tenure not known, but not held of the king.
She died on 4 June last. The aforesaid William her son by John Baldyngton, aged 15 years on the feast of St Matthew last, is her heir.

He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned messuage, land and rent.
Hole. A messuage and 2 ferlings of land, and 10s. yearly rent in Upanry, held of the king in chief.
He died on Friday before the Assumption, 9 Richard II. William Boteler his son, agd 21 years and more, is his heir.
Ever since his death William Horbury, clerk, has occupied the premises and taken the issues and profits thereof.

159 SIMON DE BERKYNG, citizen and goldsmith of London
Writ of mandamus, Canterbury, 29 May, 16 Richard II
LONDON. Inq. taken before the mayor, 16 July, 17 Richard II.
He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned tenements, quitrents and reversion. By his testament proved, proclaimed and enrolled in the husting of London held on Monday after SS Philip and James, 23 Edward III, he bequeathed the said tenements etc. (except those in Mugwelstrete, which are not mentioned in his testament) to Lucy his wife for life, and then to divers children of his and the heirs of their bodies, and so from heir to heir so long as anyone of his blood should survive, provided that none of them should be allowed to sell, bequeath or otherwise alienate the same; and if all his children and the heirs of his blood should die, then he willed and bequeathed that the tenement in Wodestrete wherein he dwelt should remain for ever to the almonry of St Dunstan of the Goldsmithry of London to provide a chaplain to celebrate daily in the church of St Peter of Wodestrete for his soul and the souls of his father and mother and all the faithful departed under the supervision of the wardens of the said Goldsmithry, and that the other tenements and quitrents mentioned in the testament should be sold by his surviving executors, or by their executors, as is more fully contained in the testament. After his death the said Lucy held the tenement in Wodestrete all her life, and all Simon‘s children died in her lifetime without heirs of their bodies. Long before her death, supposing that none of Simon‘s heirs were surviving, the said Lucy, as Simon‘s executrix, sold to John Coraunt and Robert Launde, goldsmiths of London, all the tenements and quitrents which he bequeathed in his testament to be sold. She died on 3 April, 46 Edward III. Immediately after her death, Nicholas Twyford, John Broun, William Burdeyne and Thomas Paunton, wardens of the said Goldsmithry, supposing that none of Simon‘s heirs were then surviving, entered into the tenement in Wodestrete by virtue of the bequest aforesaid, and held it to the use of the Goldsmithry. Afterwards Thomas Salesbury, goldsmith, recovered by plea all the said tenements and quitrents by virtue of the above bequest, and was seised thereof as heir in fee tail by livery duly made to him. Afterwards he enfeoffed the aforesaid Nicholas Twyford, John Broun, William Burdeyne and Thomas Paunton of all the said tenements and quitrents to the use of the said Goldsmithry, and they held the same and took the issues thereof accordingly, and the present wardens of the Goldsmithry take the issues to the same use.
Parish of St Peter in Wodestrete. A tenement from which 20s. yearly is paid to the hospital of St Bartholomew.
Parish of St Matthew in Fridaystrete. A tenement from which 20s. yearly quitrent is paid to the prior of Christ Church, Canterbury, and 2 lbs wax for the maintenance of two candles burning in the church of St Matthew aforesaid.
Parish of St Pancras in Soperslane. 13s. 4d. quitrent from a shop formerly held by Thomas Everard, and 3s. 4d. quitrent from a shop before le Brodeseld.
Parish of All Hallows in Honylane. 6s. 4d. quitrent from a shop lately held by Adam Karlill, ‘spicer’.
Parish of St Sepulchre without Neugate. 22d. quitrent from a tenement formerly William Skipwith’s.
Parish of St Olave. Two tenements in Mugwelstrete, and the reversion of another tenement which William Bedell, cordwainer, and Joan his wife, held as dower of the said Joan. From the said three tenements 4s. quitrent is paid to the hospital of St Bartholomew and 4s. is payable yearly for the maintenance of a lamp hanging before the high altar in the church of St Olave. The said Joan died about the Annunciation last.
All the above are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.
He died in 23 Edward III, day not known. Emma wife of Richard Wymondham, daughter of Thomas S… and Mabel his wife, [?daughter of] the said Thomas Salesbury, is his kinswoman and next heir, and is 30 years of age and more.

Writ after the death of the said Simon, who held certain lands etc. for life of the inheritance of John Vylers, kinsman and one of the heirs of Simon Pakeman and a minor in the king’s wardship. 18 May, 16 Richard II.
WARWICK. Inq. taken at Coventre, Friday after St Luke, 17 Richard II.
He died seised in his demesne as of fee tail of the under-mentioned lands etc. of the inheritance of the said John Vilers and of Katharine wife of Robert Dyggeby of Tylton, the other heir of the said Simon Pakeman, by virtue of a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster in the quinzaine of Easter, 24 Edward III, between Geoffrey del Peek and Gilbert del Peek of Coventre, querents, and John Prest of Coventre and Isabel his wife, deforciants, whereby those lands etc. were settled on the said John Prest and Isabel for life, with successive remainders to Simon son of Richard le Coupere (named in the writ) and the heirs of his body, and to Simon Pakeman of Kerby and his heirs. John and Isabel died seised of the above lands, and after their death the said Simon Coupere entered by virtue of the fine aforesaid and died seised without heir of his body.
Corley. A messuage with a croft adjacent called Goldilond, a field called Hullefeld, a croft called Burghcroft, a field called Phelipstokkyng with a grove adjacent, 2a. land lying between John Menewode and the highway leading to Coventre in Bunsestokkyng, 1a. land in Brodecrofte, a moiety of a croft called Otecroft, a field called Maisterlond with a wood called Maisterwode adjacent, a wood called Geambewode, a meadow called Horsley with a grove adjacent, and a meadow called Perismede; whereof the meadow called Horsley with the adjacent grove is held of John de Katesby by fealty and service of 2d. yearly, and the remaining lands etc. are held of Richard Chambernon, knight, by service of 22s. yearly.
He died on Thursday before the Invention of the Holy Cross last. John Vilers, aged 13 years and in the king’s wardship by reason of his minority, and Katharine wife of Robert Dyggeby, aged 30 years and more, are co-heirs of the said Simon Pakeman of Kerby.

She and Edmund died without heir of their bodies.
Berton. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, except for 1a. land called Grondelesacre which is held of the king as an assart by service of 12d. to be rendered yearly at the king’s castle of Winchester.

SUSSEX. Inq. taken at Stenyng, Tuesday, 18 February, 16 Richard II.
She held the under-mentioned manors of Iwhurst and Sountyng, lands in West-grynsted, Stenyng and Brembre, rent in Hanefeld and advowson of Blechyngton in joint feoffment with the said Edmund her husband, by gift and feoffment of William Mugge, late dean of the king’s chapel of Wyndesore; William Sewale, late parson of the church of Brudemayne, and John Coleman, late parson of the church of Chelbury, who gave the same (by the name of the manor of Ewhurst and Sountyng and all the other lands etc. which they had in Hallelond and Hanefeld in the rape of Brembre and elsewhere in the county) to the said Edmund and Joan and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of Edmund. Edmund and Joan died without heir of their bodies.
She held the under-mentioned manor of Blackynton in joint feoffment with the same Edmund by gift and grant of John Coleman and John Beste, clerks, for life, with successive remainders to Thomas Blount, the younger, for life, and to the right heirs of the said Edmund.
She held the under-mentioned manor of Rype, lands in Selmeston and rent in Chalvynton in joint feoffment with the same Edmund by gift and feoffment of John Coleman, clerk, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, rendering 20l. yearly to the said John during his life, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Edmund.
She held a third part of the under-mentioned manor of Offyngton jointly with the said Edmund by grant of William Elmested to them and the heirs of Edmund. She also held the other two-thirds of the same manor, and died seised of the profits thereof.

LANCASTER. Inq. taken at Prestcote, Thursday the feast of Corpus Christi, 16 Richard II.
Long before his death he granted the under-mentioned lands etc. to John de Aldelem and Katharine his wife, and John their son, for life, at a rent of 8 marks payable yearly to himself and his heirs; and on 12 November, 11 Richard II, he granted the said rent to John de Belton, clerk, John Morehous, clerk, and Richard Okebourn, and their heirs.
Chorlegh in the wapentake of Leylondshire. All his lands etc., held of the duke of Lancaster by service of providing a bailiff of the said wapentake.
Bolton on the Moors. Certain lands etc., held of John de la Warre, lord of Manchestre, by knight’s service.

HANTS. Inq. (indented) taken at Basyngstoke, Saturday, 15 March, 16 Richard II.
The said Eleanor held the under-mentioned messuage, 4 virgates and 1/2a. land and 2a. meadow in Odiham in joint feoffment with the said William her husband, deceased, for the term of their lives, by demise of William Talmache, knight, and Juliana his wife, made with the king’s licence, with remainder to John son of the said William Fremelesworth, and the heirs of his body. The said John died long ago in Eleanor‘s lifetime, leaving issue a certain Joan his daughter and sole heir, who is now 30 years of age and more and married to John Grant.
The said Eleanor held the under-mentioned toft and 40a. land called la Potte in joint feoffment with the said William her husband, by demise of Nicholas Rook, the reversion belonging to William her son by the said William, and the heirs of his body. The said William the son died long ago in her lifetime, leaving issue a certain Joan his daughter and sole heir, who is now 26 years of age and more and married to Richard Alderton.
Odiham. A messuage, 4 virgates and 1/2a. land and 2a. meadow, held of the king in chief by service of 10s. yearly; and a toft and 40a. land called la Potte, held of William Esturmy, knight, by service of a pair of gilt spurs.
She died on 20 December last.

Writ to John duke of Aquitaine and Lancaster, or to his lieutenant in the duchy of Lancaster, with reference to the lands etc. held by Roger of the dower of Sybil his wife, still living, which were taken into the king’s hand as forfeit by reason of the judgement rendered against him in the Parliament held at Westminster in Richard II. Winchester, 26 January, 16 Richard II.
DUCHY OF LANCASTER. Inq. taken at Cliderhowe, 3 April, 16 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned messuages etc. at the time of the forfeiture aforesaid as the dower of his wife Sybil.
Flixton. 10 messuages, 100a. land, 20a. meadow and 200a. pasture, held of the duke of Lancaster in chief by knight’s service and service of 17s. 6d. yearly.
He died on Friday before St Katharine, 16 Richard II.
From the time of the said forfeiture until Michaelmas, 12 Richard II, John de Radclif of Ordesale occupied the premises and took all the issues and profits to his own use without the king’s licence. From the said Michaelmas until 21 July, 13 Richard II, Robert de Tounlay and Henry his brother, occupied the same and took the issues and profits by virtue of the king’s letters patent. Since the said 21 July John de Stanley, knight, Robert de Faryngton, clerk, and master Roger de Faryngton, clerk, have occupied the same by virtue of the king’s letters patent granting the same to them, free of rent, for the life of the said Roger de Fulthorp, and have taken the issues and profits for the sustenance of the said Sybil and the relief of her poor estate.

He held at the time of the forfeiture aforesaid the under-mentioned messuages etc. in Quyk of the dower of Sybil his wife, of the inheritance of Richard de Radclyff, formerly her husband, and the under-mentioned messuages etc. in Bemeslay and Gayregrave of the dower of the same Sybil of the inheritance of Richard Mauleverer, knight, formerly her husband.
Quyk. 6 messuages and 80a. land and meadow, held of John duke of Lancaster, by knight’s service.
Bemeslay and Gayregrave. 5 messuages and 60a. land and meadow, held of the earl of Northumberland and the lord de Clyfford by knight’s service.
He died on Friday after the octave of St Martin last.
From the day of the said forfeiture until the following Michaelmas John son of Richard de Radclyff of the county of Lancaster occupied the premises in Quyk and took the issues and profits thereof, by what title the jurors know not, and the said Sybil occupied the premises in Berneslay and Gayregrave and took the issues and profits and satisfied the king thereof in the Exchequer. From the said Michaelmas until the Assumption following Robert de Tounlay and Henry his brother occupied all the premises and took the issues and profits thereof by the king’s letters patent; and since then John de Staynlay, knight, Robert de Faryngton, clerk, and Roger de Faryngton, clerk, have done the same.

The said John, who lately died while a minor in the king’s wardship, held the under-mentioned manor in his demesne as of fee tail by a gift and feoffment thereof lately made to John de Albiniaco and Cecily his wife, his ancestors, by Ellis Godleye. The said John and Cecily had issue Ellis their son and heir, who had issue Elizabeth his daughter and heir, mother of the said John the king’s ward.
Kyngeshome by Gloucestre. The manor so called, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
The said John son of Elizabeth died on Monday after St Peter’s Chains, in the year aforesaid, without heir of his body. His next heirs are William Mattesdon Droys, son and heir of Maud daughter of the said John de Albiniaco and Cecily and sister of Ellis aforesaid, Eva wife of Simon Cadel, daughter and heir of Christina another sister of the said Maud and Ellis, Cecily Sage, another sister of the said Maud and Ellis, and John Swonhonger, son and heir of Isabel another sister of the said Maud and Ellis. Of these, William, Eva and Cecily are 40 years of age and more, and John Swonhonger is 18 years of age.

She held in dower of the said inheritance a third part of the office of the ushership of the Exchequer, and a third part of divers other offices belonging to that office, to wit, of the offices of ushers and criers in the Common Bench and marshals, ushers, criers and barrier-men in all eyres of justices in eyre in England, together with a third part of 5d. daily in the Receipt of the Exchequer while the Exchequer is open. The said third part of all the offices aforesaid, together with the third part of the said 5d. daily, is held of the king in chief by service of grand serjeanty.
She died on 22 August last.

Since the said Monday Walter Blount, knight, has worked and held the manor and taken the issues and profits thereof, by what title the jurors know not, but the general belief in the neighbourhood is that the king has granted him the manor until the lawful age of the heir.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Coggeshale, 10 July, 17 Richard II.
A certain Andrew Sakevyle, knight, now deceased, who was long ago seised of the under-mentioned manors in his demesne as of fee, granted them to Andrew Sakevyle, knight, his son, for life; and Andrew the son was seised of them as of his free tenement. Afterwards the said Andrew the father granted the reversion of the said manors (inter alia) after the death of Andrew the son to Peter de Hoo, chaplain, late rector of Alfreston, William Halden and Thomas Preston, all now deceased, and John Spycer, chaplain, parson of the church of Hertefelde, late rector of Westgrenstede, who is still living, in fee simple, without any condition; and Andrew the son attorned to the said grantees accordingly. Andrew the son died in his father‘s lifetime, and the grantees entered into the manors; whereupon Andrew the father released and quitclaimed to them, their heirs and assigns, all his right and claim in the manors. Subsequently, after the death of Andrew the father, the grantees by their indented charter granted the manors (inter alia) with the advowsons of the churches thereof to the said Maud (by the name of Maud late the wife of Andrew Sakevyle, knight,) for life, with successive remainders to the right heirs of the body of Andrew the father, and to Thomas Sakevyle of Wythiham, Sussex (by the name of Thomas son of Joan Burgeys) and the heirs of his body; and by virtue of that grant the said Maud was seised of the manors with the advowsons of the churches as of her free tenement, and continued her estate therein until her death.
Bereholte and Bures ad Montem. The manors, with the advowsons of the churches, held of Anne queen of England as of the honor of Eye, by service of a fifth part of a knight’s fee and by service of doing suit every month to the said queen‘s court of the said honor.
She died on 9 June last. Walter de la Pole, knight, aged 22 years and more, is her son and heir.

A certain Andrew Saukevill was seised of the said manor and the advowson of the church thereof in his demesne as of fee, and gave the same to Peter de Hoo, chaplain, parson of the church of Alfricheston, William Halden, Thomas de Preston and John Spicer, chaplain, late parson of the church of Westgrenstede, to hold to them and their heirs under the following conditions, namely, that they should re-enfeoff him thereof, to hold to him and the heirs of his body, with successive remainders to Thomas son of Joan Burgeys, and the heirs of his body, to Alice sister of the said Thomas son of Joan, and the heirs of her body, and to his own right heirs. He died without heir of his body before the re-enfeoffment aforesaid had been made. Afterwards, the said grantees gave and granted the manor and advowson to the said Maud for life, with successive remainders to the said Andrew and the heirs of his body, to the said Thomas son of Joan and the heirs of his body, and to themselves and their heirs; and Maud died seised of such estate therein. Peter de Hoo, William de Halden and Thomas de Preston died; and after their death John Spicere released and quitclaimed all his right and claim in the manor and advowson to the said Thomas son of Joan and his heirs and assigns by a writing enrolled before the justices of the Bench in Easter term, 15 Richard II.
