BERKS. Inq. (indented) taken at Wantyng, 12 March, 22 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manors of Wadele and Wykyngesham in tail male by letters patent of 16 April, 51 Edward III [Calendar of Patent Rolls 1374-1377, p.259] granting him the said manors (formerly called the manor of Worde) after their reversion on the death without heirs male of Richard de Pembrugge, knight, who had held them by the king’s gift, the said Gilbert surrendering letters patent granting him, as Gilbert Talbot of Richard’s Castle, esquire, an annuity of 40l.
He held the manor of Hanneye as parcel of the manor of Newenton Longeville and of the possessions of the alien priory of St Faith, Longueville, which were granted by letters patent of 30 July, 14 Richard II [Calendar of Patent Rolls 1388-1392, pp.292-3] to the said Gilbert and Joan his wife, formerly wife of Nicholas Tamworth, knight, and their heirs, during the war with France, at farm, and with licence to acquire them under certain conditions and at a farm specified in the patent.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Ledecombe Regis and the manors of Offord Clugny, Hunts, and Manton and Tykesore, Rutland, to himself for term of life and to his heirs, executors and assigns for a year after his death, having obtained them by licence of the king by letter patent of 13 January, 20 Richard II [Calendar of Patent Rolls 1396-1399, p.58, cf. Calendar of Patent Rolls 1391-1396, p.48].
He held the other under-mentioned lands jointly with Margaret his wife, to themselves and the heirs of their bodies, by the feoffment of John Spencer, clerk.
Wadele and Wykyngesham. The manors. Richard de Pembrugge, knight, held them of Edward III in socage by fealty. Whether the said Gilbert also holds them in socage by fealty is unknown.
Hanneye. The manor. Tenure as in the above mentioned patent.
Ledecombe Regis. The manor. Tenure as in the above mentioned patent.
Hautford. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the manor of Chessebury, late of John Cobham, knight, by service unknown.
Newenton by Bokelond. A messuage, 6 cottages and a carucate of land, held of Katharine de Besyles as of the manor of Bokelond, service unknown.
He died 6 February last past. Richard Talbot, aged 43 weeks, is the son of the said Gilbert and Margaret and his next heir, and on the day of his death he had no other sons or daughters legitimately born.
In his will he appointed the said Margaret, John Pecche, John Lane, John Broun, rector of Stowe, John Spencer, rector of Hautford and William Beton, chaplain, who outlive, his executors.

The king by letters patent granted the said Gilbert the manor of Newenton Longevyle, Bucks, with its appurtenances, and all the possessions as well spiritual as temporal late of the priory of St Faith, Longueville, to hold to himself and his heirs at fee farm during the war with France.
The under-mentioned rent is parcel of the said manor.
The priory of Angleseye. A rent of 100s.

The king by letters patent granted the said Gilbert the manors of Ledecombe Regis, Berks, Offord Clugny, Hunts, and Manton and Tikessore, Rutland, to hold by a certain annual rent, and afterwards licensed him to acquire the said lands, the advowson of Offord Cluny, which pertains to the manor, and all fees etc. pertaining to them from the abbot and convent of Cluny, with tenure as in the Berkshire inquisition.

He was seised jointly with Margaret his wife, who outlives, of the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Little Merlawe, to themselves and the heirs of their bodies, by the gift and feoffment of John Spencer, clerk.

The king by letters patent granted the said Gilbert the manor of Newenton Longevill with all other possessions of the priory of St Faith, Longueville, to himself, his heirs and assigns during the war with France, at fee farm.
He held the under-mentioned manors of Grishagh and Babyngle in the right of Margaret his wife, who outlives, by the gift and feoffment, the king’s licence having been obtained, of Thomas Bardolf, knight, John Howard, knight, George Fylbrig’, knight, James de Belingford, Richard Gegg and Roger Raulyn to the said Margaret and Constantine Cliftone late her husband and the heirs of the said Constantine.
He held the under-mentioned third parts of the manors of Hilbirworth, Westbradynham, Cranewys, Topcroft, Dentone, Bokenham and Le Lathys, and the third part of the hundred of Shropham in the right of the said Margaret, which she held in dower after the death of the said Constantine.

He held the under-mentioned fees and the advowsons of Attilburgh and Rydone in the same manner as the manor of Hilbirworth etc. (as above, last inquisition). He held the other under-mentioned advowsons as parcel of the manor of Babyngle, held as in the previous Norfolk inquisition.
Crouchstoke. A moiety of a knight’s fee which John White, knight, holds.
Holkham, Melton, Wramplingham, Bliford, Hekyngham, Garboltisham, Revesal, Aptone, Qwhedynham, Saxlingham, Sparham, Stukeye and Little Meltone. A fourth part of eleven knights’ fees which John de Halsham and Philippa his wife hold.

He held the under-mentioned lands in the right of Agnes, his wife, who outlives, which lands were taken into the king’s hands by reason of the felony and flight of the said Richard.
Walcote. A fourth part of a messuage and 20a. land, held of the prior of Sympryngham by the service of 1lb. wax and 1/2lb. incense yearly.

The inquisition includes details (largely illegible) of the alienation from the manors of Thunnak and Laghton and other lands mentioned in the inquisition of an annual rent of 20l. to a chantry in the church of Gainsborough, the king’s licence having been obtained [Calendar of Patent Rolls 1388-1392, p.25].

She died seised in her demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned rents.
Derteford, Wylmynton, Sotton and Granstede. A rent of 49s. 8 3/4d. yearly of divers tenants, of which 5s. 3 1/4d. arises from view of frankpledge in Derteford which the bailiff of the earl of Kent ought to pay, held of the king in chief in socage and for a quarter of a third part of a penny yearly.
Thomas Wake, son of Thomas Wake, knight, son of the said Alice, aged nineteen years at St Gregory last past, is her kinsman and heir.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Northampton, Saturday after St Bartholomew, 22 Richard II.
She held no lands in demesne or in service. But she granted the under-mentioned manors, by charter dated 11 August, 15 Richard II, to William Danby, John Mulsho, Robert de Thame, Stephen Tynwell, parson of West Depyng, now dead, John Hamond, parson of Ownesby and Henry Hamond, chaplain, to themselves, their heirs and assigns, in perpetuity. The said William, John, Robert, Stephen, John and Henry granted to the said Alice the said manors for term of life, with reversion to themselves. Alice died so seised and after her death they entered and took the issues.
Bleseworth. The manor, held of the duke of Lancaster by knight’s service.
Mydelton. The manor, with its appurtenances in Mydelton, Colyntre, Preston, Pydyngton, Horton, Hakelton and Quenton, and the advowson of the moiety of the churches of Colyntre and Midelton, held of John Trussell of Gayton, knight, by service unknown.
She died on the feast of St Lawrence last past. Heir as above.

LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Estdepyngg, Tuesday after the Decollation of St John the Baptist, 22 Richard II.
She held no lands in the said county. But by charter dated 11 August, 15 Richard II, she granted the under-mentioned manor to William Danby, John Mulso, Robert de Tame, Stephen Tynewelle, parson of Westdepyngg, John Hamond, parson of Ounesby, and Henry Hamond, chaplain, to themselves, their heirs and assigns. They were seised therein and took the issues until Thursday the feast of SS Fabian and Sebastian, 19 Richard II, when they granted to the said Alice the said manor for term of life at an annual rent of 6 capons with reversion to themselves.
Alice died so seised, and after her death they re-entered and took and yet take the issues.
Estdepyngg. The manor, called Bleseworth (extent given), held of the earl of Kent as of the manor of Westdepyng. The extent includes a messuage in Westdepyng called Croydonplace, held by the prior of Hauteyprys.

He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned lands.
Clixby. The third part of a messuage, 4 bovates of land, 7a. meadow, and 24s. rent of assize, held of the king in chief by the service of a fifteenth part of a knight’s fee.
He died Sunday after Martinmas last past. Margaret Warde, aged 49 years and more, is his daughter and heir.

Benstede and Esyngton. A messuage, a carucate of land and a water-mill, held of the countess of Kent, service unknown.

He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manor and of the fees and rents pertaining to it.
James Berners, knight, was seised of the under-mentioned manor of Westhorsle which he held of Miles father of Brian, but by judgement in the parliament of 11 Richard II it was forfeit and seized into the king’s hands. The said judgement was annulled in 22 Richard II, and the service arising from the manor descends to Miles, a minor, as son and heir of the said Brian son of Miles Wyndesore, who held it in 11 Richard II.
Stanewelle. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief as of the castle of Wyndesore by the service of one knight’s fee and 7l. 11s. 8d. yearly castle ward to the said castle, to wit, 16s. 8d. every 40 days.
Westbedefonte. The manor is held by the prior of Newark by the service of one knight’s fee and 6s. 8d. every 24 weeks.
Shepcote. The manor, held by John de Ticcheborne by the service of half a knight’s fee and 3s. 4d. every 24 weeks.

By a fine levied in the king’s court, the king’s licence having been obtained, he was seised jointly with Elizabeth his wife to themselves and the heirs of their bodies of the under-mentioned moiety of the manor of Fiernham, by the gift of Robert de Loteryngton, parson of Gosberkirk, Roger de Gayton, parson of Wath, John Wolde, parson of Claypole, and John Skotilthorp, chaplain, with reversion in case of lack of heirs to the said Robert, Roger, John and John. The said Elizabeth died 17 Richard II and John likewise died without heirs of their bodies.
Fiernham. A moiety of the manor, held of the king in chief by service unknown.
He died 27 July last past. The said Robert, Roger, John and John are his next heirs. Roger and John Wolde outlive, and are aged 40 years and more.

LANCASTER. Inq. taken at Maincestre, 17 August, 22 Richard II.
He held no lands in chief, but died seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manors.
Maincestre. The manor, with the advowsons of the churches of Maincestre and Assheton under Lime, held of John duke of Lancastre in chief by the service of five knights’ fees and a fourth part of a fee, and rendering yearly 4l. 2s. 6d. for ‘sak’ and 52s. 6d. castle ward to the castle of Lancaster, suit to the court of Lancaster every six weeks and to the court of the wapentake of Salford every three weeks.
Keuerdelegh. The manor, held of the said duke in chief as of the manor of Halton, Cheshire, by the service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee and for suit to the wapentake of Derby, Lanes, every three weeks.
He died Saturday after St James last past. Master Thomas la Warre, parson of Maincestre, aged 40 years and more, is his brother and heir, to wit, son of Roger father of the said John.

He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manors.
Middilton. The manor (extent given) held of the king in chief by the service of one sore sparrowhawk or 2s. yearly at the Exchequer on the feast of St James the Apostle. The extent includes a water-mill (ruinous) and view of frankpledge twice yearly.
Isfeld. The manor (extent given, including a ruinous water-mill), held of the archbishop of Canterbury by the service of one knight’s fee and for suit every three weeks to his court of Lokkesfeld.
Flecehyng. The lordship called Torryngespeverel (extent given), held of John de Alta Ripa by the service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. The extent includes view of frankpledge twice yearly.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Keteryng, Thursday after St Bartholomew, 22 Richard II.
Elizabeth, daughter of Gilbert de Nevyll, knight, was seised of the under-mentioned manor of Grafton and being so seised married the said John. After, by a fine in the king’s court in the quindene of Easter, 12 Richard II, the king’s licence having been obtained, between the said John and Elizabeth, plaintiffs, and Robert Lotryngton, parson of Gosberkyrke, Roger Gayton, parson of Wath, John Wolde, parson of Claypole, and Peter de Musle, parson of Wilby, defendants, the said manor was granted to the said John and Elizabeth and the heirs of their bodies with remainder for lack of such heirs to the said Robert, Roger, John and Peter. Elizabeth died without heir of their bodies 17 Richard II and John died likewise, after whose death the reversion is to the said Robert, Roger, John and Peter.
By a fine levied in the king’s court in three weeks of Easter, 21 Richard II, he granted the manor of Great Harwedon and its appurtenances to Thomas la Warre, canon of the cathedral church of Lincoln, Richard Wollemer, Simon de Luffenham, John Hunteryngton, Thomas Chamberleyn, chaplain, William Mold, chaplain, John Henege, Edmund Otherhill, John Fengreyne, Nicholas Motte, parson of Rothewell, John de Alta Ripa, John Fleill and Thomas Fyssher for term of their lives, with reversion to himself and his heirs, rendering yearly a rose.
Grafton by Geydyngton. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Thynden. The manor with its appurtenances and 20 messuages, 500a. land, 40a. meadow, 20a. pasture and 10l. rent in Great Harwedon, Little Harewedon, Thynden, Irtlyngburgh, Stoke Bruer, Shetilhangre and Alderton. The said manor except a parcel called Prayoursthyng is held of Lord Fitzwauter by service unknown. Prayoursthing is held of the earl of Stafford by service unknown. The said messuages are held of divers persons, to wit, lands in Great Harwedon and Little Harwedon are held of the honor of Huntingdon by knight’s service. The lands in Irthyngburgh are held of lord Fitzwauter by service unknown. The lands in Stokebruer, Shetilhangre and Alderton are held of the heirs of John Wodevyll for 19s. yearly.
Great Harwedon and Little Harwedon. Manors with appurtenances in Great Harwedon, Little Harwedon, Slypton, Charlton and Isham. A rent of a rose and the reversion of the manors. The manors are held of the honor of Huntingdon by knight’s service.
Northtoft. An annual rent of 5 marks from Simon Lorkyn and Robert his son, and the reversion of the manor after their deaths. The manor is held of the heirs of Richard Chambernon, knight, by knight’s service.

He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manors and lands.
Swynesheved. The manor, with the advowsons of the abbey and of the parish church of Swynesheved and the free chapel of Barthorp in the same manor, held of the duke of Lancastre by knight’s service.
Gosberkirk. Scalby. 2 manors, of which one is held of the duke of Northfolch as of his manor of Epworth by knight’s service, and the other is held of John Powcher as of his manor of Westrason by knight’s service.
