YORK. Inq. taken in the castle of York, 20 January, 18 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Carleton in his demesne as of fee. Thomas de Stapilton was seised thereof and gave it, with the licence of Edward III, to John Leget, clerk, William de Chapell, chaplain, and William de Burne, who, with the licence of Edward III, re-enfeoffed the said Thomas and the heirs male of his body, with successive remainders to the said Brian, to Miles son of Miles de Stapilton and the heirs of their bodies, and to the right heirs of the said Thomas. Thomas died without heir male of his body and Brian entered by virtue of the said grant.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Querneby in his demesne as of fee.
He held the under-mentioned third part by the law of England for life as of the right of Alice his wife, deceased; it descends to Brian son of Brian son of the said Brian and Alice.
Carleton by Snayth. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Isabel, who was the wife of Walter Faucomberge, knight, has 100s. yearly rent out of the manor for life in dower, by endowment of Roger de Burton, knight, formerly her husband.
Querneby. The manor, which extends into Querneby, Lyndelay, Langwood, Staynland, Hudersfeld, Wodhous and Scamedon, held of John de Heton of Mirfeld, service unknown. Hugh de Anneslay and Joan his wife receive 17l. 15s. yearly out of the manor in the new hospital of the Holy Trinity, Pontefract, during the life of Joan, who is still living, and after her death the heirs of the said Brian shall find a chaplain to celebrate divine service daily for 10 years for the souls of William de Querneby, his ancestors and heirs.
Ferlyngton. A third part of the manor, held of John de Nevyll, lord of Raby, service unknown.

He died seised of the under-mentioned lands etc. in his demesne as of fee.
Weston Fawell. 5 messuages, 1 1/4 carucates of land and meadow and 30s. rent, held of the king in chief by the service of 8s. yearly to the manor of Kyngesthorp, which manor is parcel of the crown.
Stoke Daubeneye. A messuage, 3 cottages, 2 virgates of land and meadow and 2a. wood, held of lord la Roos, service unknown.
He died on 31 December last. Maud wife of William Smyth of Stoke aforesaid, daughter of Emma his sister, and Agnes wife of Thomas Knyght of Keilmershe, daughter of Joan his sister, aged 21 years and more, are his heirs.
Since his death Richard Ferrour, parson of the church of Great Billyng, has occupied the premises.

The under-mentioned manor, leets, fees, reversions etc. came to the king’s hand by the death of the said Thomas and the minority of the said William.
Rothewell. The manor (extent given, including profits of a fair on Trinity Sunday) and hundred, with the advowson of the nunnery of St John the Baptist in Rothewell. Anne wife of the said Thomas is assigned to hold for life in dower a yearly rent of 4l. 18s. 10 3/4d. issuing from the manor.
Denford, Aldewyncle, Thrapston, Wodeford, Wylwencotes, Lufwyk, Ryngestede, Raundes and Midelcotes. Leets held at Denford twice yearly.

All the foregoing are held of the king in chief, as of the honor of Gloucester, by knight’s service.

The foregoing reversions are expectant on the death of John Vyncent of Rothewell who is still living, who holds them for life, the reversion belonging to Ralph Basset of Drayton last deceased and his heirs, whose heir the said William was, to wit, son of Hugh son of Ralph son of Margaret sister of Ralph father of Ralph father of the said Ralph last deceased. Of whom and by what service they are held the jurors know not.

The two last items came to the said William as heir of Ralph Basset as above.

He died on 6 April last. Edmund, aged 17 years and more, is his brother and heir.

He held the under-mentioned lands etc. on the day of his outlawry of the right and inheritance of the said Idonea, who is still living, because Richard Cok of Carsaulton and William Hardegray by a charter enrolled, dated 20 March, 45 Edward III, gave to Simon Seint Michel, lord of Codyngton, and the said Idonea, then his wife, the under-mentioned lands etc. in Sutton (by the name of their manor of Sutton) and Ewell (by the name of all the lands that they had in Ewell and Sutton by the gift of the said Simon), to them and the heirs of their bodies and to the executors or assigns for one year after the longer liver of them, the reversion after the death of Simon and Idonea belonging to Ralph de Codyngton.

Christina, who was the wife of the said John, holds in dower a third part of all the premises, the reversion belonging to the right heirs of the said John.

Newton by the Sea. A moiety of the manor, held as above.

Margery died on Thursday after St Dennis last and Edmund held the manor by the law of England on the day of his death.

The jurors say he was 21 years old on Saturday, the Translation of St Martin last.
John Clifford, aged 46 years and more, remembers this because he was in the church of Cotes on Monday, the Translation of St Martin, and saw Thomas Davyd, rector of the said church baptizing the said Robert, and afterwards the said Thomas Davyd wrote in the missal of the church that the said Robert was born on the said feast, 47 Edward III.
Walter Clement, Walter Stoghtre and John Stevenes, each aged 50 years and more, remember this because they saw the said Thomas Davyd baptize the said Robert on the said Monday and the said Thomas, rector of Cotes, and Robert Selly, rector of the church of Saperton, were godfathers.
Robert Vileyn, William Caldecote, Philip Boter and Thomas Chamberlyn, each aged 44 years, remember this because on the said Monday they saw Henry Legge, servant of William Lisle, riding for Margaret wife of John Lucy to be godmother and saw the said Margaret take the said Robert from the font by the hands of the said Thomas, the rector.

John Plaint, aged 60 years or more, says the said Thomas was born at Lincoln on the feast of St Matthias, 47 Edward III and baptised the next day in the church of St Margaret in the Close, on which day the said John was servant to Master Thomas de Sutton, clerk, godfather of the said Thomas de Swynford, and brought fire to light the candle.
Richard Fynden of Lincoln, aged 70 years and more, agrees and says that on that day he was chamberlain to John de Worsop clerk, the other godfather.
John Liminour of Lincoln, aged 50 years and more, agrees and says that on that day he brought two books, one of which was a missal, to the said church and sold them to the said John, one of the godfathers.
John de Sereby of Lincoln, aged 63 years and more, agrees and says that on the day of the baptism William Hamond, his servant, taking two jars of wine to the church, fell and spilled the wine out of one jar, for which the said John beat him.
John Baldon, aged 56 years and more, agrees and says that on that day of the baptism he was servant to the said Thomas de Sutton and was riding to Louth on his master’s business when his horse fell and the said John broke his leg.
Gilbert de Beseby of Lincoln, aged 54 years and more, agrees and says he was then chamberlain to lady Katharine de Swynford, mother of the said Thomas, and went with divers clothes of silk and gold to the said church when the said Thomas was baptised.
Nicholas Bolton, aged 60 years and more, agrees and says that he held a basin and offered water to the godfathers and godmother to wash after the baptism.
William de Middelton, aged 60 years and more, agrees and says he held a towel by the font for the godfathers and godmother to wipe their hands.
Richard Colvill of Lincoln, aged 52 years and more, agrees and says that on that day he was charged by the said lady Katharine’s steward to bring home 24 bows, which the said steward bought and gave to divers servants.
Henry Taverner, aged 60 years and more, agrees and says that on the day of the baptism Agnes his wife gave birth to John his firstborn son.
Thomas Boterwyk, aged 68 years and more, agrees and says he was clerk in the church and took the chrism from the altar to the font.
John Waltham of Lincoln, aged 49 years and more, agrees and says that in that year William de Waltham, his father, set out for Jerusalem and died beyond the seas and in that year the said John entered into his inheritance.

John Gent, aged 52 years, knows this because he married Agnes late the wife of Henry Makeseye, on the day of the said Amy’s birth.
John Page, aged 62 years, John Goldryng, aged 62 years, and Stephen atte Frith, aged 50 years, knows this because Henry de Padyngton, common clerk of the said city, died on the day of the said Anne’s birth.
Robert Knight, aged 50 years, knows this because on the same day he was made a freeman of the city in the Gihald.
John Phelip, aged 56 years, Geoffrey atte Gate, aged 55 years, and John Haddon, aged 48 years, know this because on that day Thomas Sprotburgh, cook, was put in the pillory for selling a stinking eel pie and other unwholesome victuals.

GLOUCESTER. Proof of age (indented) taken at Cirencestre, Monday before St Martin, 18 Richard II.
The said William was born in Gloucester on Thursday before St Wolstan the bishop, 46 Edward III, and baptised in St Michael’s church in the same town.
William Crook aged 62 years and more, remembers this because he was in the said church on the said Thursday when Edmund Blount, father of the said William, was summoned to be at Sobbury on the following Monday for divers business to be done for the king.
William Wightfeld and Walter Marcley, each aged 60 years and more, remember this because on that day divers shops of theirs in Gloucester were burnt.
Nicholas Bridlep, Thomas Compton and Thomas Salesbury, each aged 54 years and more, know this because on that day they were with William Keyberere one of the said William Blount’s godfathers, to raise a newly built house of William Keyberere’s and they vowed to hear mass in the said church and then and there saw Cecily Sage, the said William Blount’s godmother, holding him in her hands at the font to be baptized.
Robert But, Robert Tounesende and William Harleye, each aged 51 years and more, remember this because on that day Joan daughter of Thomas Ocle was married to Edmund Toky in the said church and the said Robert, Robert and William were there at mass and then saw John Bowyare, parochial chaplain of the said church, baptize the said William Blount.
Nicholas Taverner, Peter Pecke and Philip Diare, each aged 48 years and more, know this because on the same day they set out for the Roman court.
Margaret wife of Lawrence Seybroke was summoned by Robert Peynton and Mark Sylvestre but did not come.
