LONDON. Inq. taken at the Guildhall, 16 May, 9 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned cottages, etc. in his demesne as of fee.
Parish of St. Bride in the ward of Farndon without. 4 small cottages, and 3 vacant plots of land which were formerly 3 cottages built on to the aforesaid cottages, with a great garden annexed to the said cottages and void plots, in the lane called ‘Sholane’ by Fletestrete, held of the king as in burgage of the city. The premises are charged with 2s. 4d. yearly quit-rent to the prior and convent of the hospital of St. John of Jerusalem of Clerkenwell by London.
He died on 1 April, 9 Richard II. Nicholas de Audeley, knight, his son, aged 50 years and more, is his heir.

STAFFORD. Inq. taken at Forton, Thursday before Easter, 9 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned castle, towns and manors, to him and the heirs of his body.
Helegh. The castle with the park, held of the heirs of William de Betteleye by service of 1d. yearly.
Betteleye. The township, held of the same heirs by service of a rose at Midsummer. There is no manor there, nor any demesne lands; but there are 2 watermills, 2 fishponds, 8l. rent of assise, and pleas etc. of court worth 40d. yearly.
Tunstall. The town (extent given), held of the heirs of Alan de Greseleye by service of a pair of gloves at Christmas. The extent includes iron mines worth 100s. yearly.
Horton. The town (extent given), held of the earl of Stafford by service of 10s. yearly. The extent includes a mine of seacoals worth 20d. yearly, and 10s. yearly for a custom called ‘Stuth’.
Endon. The manor (extent given), held of the earl of Stafford, service not known. The extent includes a moiety of a park.
Audeley. The manor (extent given), held of the lady Joan Fornevale by service of a pair of gilt spurs yearly. The extent includes a park.
Chesturton. A manor (extent given), held of the same lady by the same services.
Norton. A moiety of the town (extent given), held of the same lady, service not known.
Astonesfeld. A third part of the …, held of John duke of Lancaster, service not known.
He died on 1 April last. Nicholas de Audeley, his son, aged 50 years and more, is his heir.

SALOP. Inq. taken at Neuport, Wednesday before Easter, 9 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned towns, castle and manor, to him and the heirs of his body.
Newport (Novus Burgus). The town (extent given), held of the king in chief, service not known. The extent includes a market and fair.
Forde. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of rendering 12l. yearly at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff.
Redcastle (Castrum Rubium). The castle so called, held of the heirs of John Harecourt, who are of full age, by service of 1d. yearly. The castle is worth nothing yearly beyond deductions; and there are there 2 carucates of arable, 4 a. meadow, a park, a watermill, a fishpond, 10l. rent of assise of free tenants and tenants at will, and pleas etc. of court worth 10s. yearly.
Marchomley. The town (extent given), held of the heirs of John de Marchomley, who are of full age, by service of a pair of gloves at Easter.

He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the manors of Stowey, Honyber, Wollavyngton and Pull and the messuage, etc. in Puryton. He held the manors of Ludeford and Blakedon and the messuage, etc. in Staunton for life by grant of Hugh de Newhall, parson of the church of Blakedon, and Roger Magot, vicar of the church of Fremyngton, by a fine levied in the king’s court, the reversion after his death belonging to Edward king of England and his heirs.
Stowey. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Honyber. The manor, held of Joan de Mohun, as of her castle of Donstarr, by knight’s service.
Puryton. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of the abbot of Glastonbury by knight’s service.

SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Bruggewatere, 21 May, 9 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manors of Stowey, Puryton, Wollavyngton, Stokelond Lovell and [Honyber] (fn. 2), the tenement in Wolwardeston and the messuages, etc. in Honybere and Lillestoke for life by grant of Baldwin Ailmer [and Roger Levet] with successive remainders to Roger his son, in tail, and to Nicholas de Audeley, brother of the said Roger, and his heirs. Roger died without issue, so that the premises belong to Nicholas by virtue of the said grant and a fine levied in the king’s court.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Pull for life by demise of Hugh Newhall, parson of the church of Southmolton, and Philip Warwik, chaplain, with successive remainders to Roland his son, in tail male, to Oliver brother of the said Roland, in tail male, to James de Audeley and Isabel his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, and to the right heirs of the said James and Isabel. Roland and Oliver died without issue. James and Isabel had issue a certain Margaret, who had issue Fulk Fitz Wareyn, who is still living and is 23 years of age and more.
He held the under-mentioned manors of [Ludeford] and Blakedon and the messuage and land in Staunton for life by grant of Hugh Newhall, parson of the church of [Blakedon], and Roger Magot, vicar of the church of Fremyngton, with remainder to Edward king of England and his heirs.
Stowey Inferior and Puryton with Donende. The manors, held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a barony.

SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Donstarr, 13 June, 9 Richard II.
He was seised for life on 12 May, 48 Edward III, of the under-mentioned messuage and carucate of land, with reversion to King Edward and his heirs; and on that day he granted all his estate in the premises, by the name of the manor of Staunton, to William Gambon, named in the writ, at a yearly rent of 8l. 6s. 8d., with proviso for re-entry in the event of the rent being in arrear for a fortnight. William was in possession during the life of the said James, and after his death until he was removed by the escheator. On 15 December, 48 Edward III, King Edward by letters patent ratified the above grant to William, and moreover granted that he should have the manor in fee. The messuage and land and the manor are one and the same tenement, and before the king’s grant to William the reversion of the manor belonged to the king and no one else. William Gambon is 50 years of age and more. The said James never re-entered the manor by reason of the rent being in arrear.
Staunton. The manor, held of Joan de Mohun, as of her manor of Menheved, by knight’s service.

He held the under-mentioned manors of Barnstaple, Combe Martyn, Dertyngton, Fremyngton and South Molton and the hundreds of Fremyngton and South Molton with the advowsons of the churches of Combe Martyn, Dertyngton, Fremyngton and South Molton for the term of the lives of himself and Isabel his wife, deceased, by gift of Hugh Nywehall, late parson of the church of Blakedon, and Roger Magot, late vicar of the church of Fremyngton, to him and the said Isabel for life, with successive remainders to James their son and the heirs male of his body, to the heirs male of their own bodies and to Edward III and his heirs. They and their son James died without heir male of their bodies, so that the premises should remain to the king and his heirs.
He held the under-mentioned manors of Bovetracy, Northlieu, Holdesworthy and Langacre, co. Devon, and Takkebeare, co. Cornwall, with the advowsons of the churches of Northlieu and Holdesworthy for life, with reversion to Edward III, by gift of the same Hugh and Roger by a fine levied in the court of Edward III. They ought to remain to the present king.
He held the under-mentioned manors of Nymetracy and Holne with the advowsons of the churches by gift of the same Hugh and Roger, by a fine levied as above, to him and Isabel his wife, deceased, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to Edward III and his heirs. James and Isabel had a daughter Margaret, who married Fulk Fitz Waryn, knight. Fulk and Margaret had issue the present Fulk Fitz Waryn, knight, and died. The present Fulk is 25 years of age and more and the premises ought to descend to him and the heirs of his body by virtue of the said fine.
He held the under-mentioned manors of Warkelegh, Merwode, Ilferdecombe, Uppex, Seintmarichurche, Bear Chartrie and Wolryngton and the messuages, rent, etc. in Credypeytevyn, Hassok, Credyton, Shelyngford and Totteneys and the advowsons of the churches of Saturlegh, Warkelegh and Merwode by gift of Hugh Newehall, late parson of the church of Southmolton, and Philip Warrewyk, chaplain, by a fine levied as above, to him and Isabel his wife, deceased, for the term of their lives, with remainders as follows:—(1) 14l. of the rent in Totteneys to remain to James their son and the heirs male of his body, and in default of such heirs to the right heirs of their own bodies; (2) the manors (except Uppex and Seintmarichurche) and the advowsons of the churches to remain to Thomas brother of the said James the son, and the heirs male of his body, and in default of such heirs to the heirs of the bodies of the said James and Isabel; (3) the manor of Uppex and a messuage, a carucate of land, 18 a. meadow, 9 a. wood and 4l. rent in Credypeytevyn, Hassok and Credyton to remain to Roland brother of the said James and the heirs male of his body, and in default of such heirs to Oliver, Roland’s brother, and the heirs male of his body, and in default of such heirs to the heirs of the bodies of James and Isabel; and (4) the manor of Seintmarichurche and a messuage, a ferling of land, 2 a. meadow and 1 a. wood in Shelyngford to remain to the said Oliver and the heirs male of his body, and in default of such heirs to the said Roland and the heirs male of his body, and in default of such heirs to the heirs of the bodies of James and Isabel.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Kyngeston with Merwell by gift of Simon Hervy, late parson of the church of Combe Martyn, and Roger Rounde, chaplain, by a fine levied as above, to him and Isabel his wife, deceased, for the term of their lives, with successive remainders to Oliver their son and the heirs male of his body, to Thomas, Oliver’s brother, and the heirs male of his body, to Roland, Thomas’s brother, and the heirs male of his body, and to the heirs of the bodies of James and Isabel. The said James the son, and Roland, Oliver and Thomas his brothers, died without heirs male of their bodies. James the father and Isabel had a daughter Margaret, who had a son Fulk Fitz Waryn, knight; and all the premises in Warkelegh, &c. and Kyngeston with Merwell ought to descend to the said Fulk and his heirs by virtue of the said fine.

DEVON. Inq. taken at Schepwayssh, Thursday after St. Gregory, 9 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned toft and mill in his demesne as of fee.
Scheftbear. A toft and a mill in the manor, held of Edward III in chief by service of holding the king’s stirrup whenever he comes to the manor of Sheftbeare.
He died in 21 Edward III. Since his death the escheators have received the issues of the premises. After his death the premises descended to Thomasia and Elizabeth, his daughters, who were of full age and died without heirs of themselves. After their death the premises reverted to Stephen Alvethecote, their uncle, brother of the said John, who was of full age. After his death the premises descended to John his son, who was 27 years of age and more at the time of his father’s death.

He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned castle and manors.
Weoley. The castle, held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. And there are there a park with deer, 2 carucates of land, and a fishery.
Northfeld. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
Craddelegh. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. The extent includes a rent called ‘averyngsylvere’.
Old Swyneford. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a twelfth part of a knight’s fee.
He died on 4 April, 9 Richard II. Joyce wife of Hugh. Burnell, knight, aged 22 years and more, is his kinswoman and heir, to wit, daughter of John his son. The said Hugh and Joyce never had any issue.

WARWICK. Inq. taken at Bermyngham, Tuesday before Easter, 9 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor and hamlet in his demesne as of fee.
He held Le Heyberne for life by demise of Richard de Getyngton and Henry de Getyngton, chaplains, with remainder to Hugh Segrave and Isabel his wife and their heirs.
Bordesley. The manor (extent given), a member of the castle of Weolegh, held of the king in chief by service of a twelfth part of a knight’s fee. The extent includes the view of frankpledge of Aston.
Le Heyberne. A messuage and 3 carucates of land so called, parcel of the manor of Bordesley, held of the king in chief by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee. He held this for life by demise of Richard de Getynton and Henry de Getynton, chaplains, with remainder to Hugh Segrave and Isabel his wife and their heirs.
Dodeston. The hamlet (extent given), parcel of the manor of Bordesley, held of the king in chief by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Neuport Paynel, Wednesday before Easter, 9 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor for life by grant of Thomas Shirryf, parson of the church of Sheldesleye, and Henry de Haukeserd, chaplain, to him and Joyce his wife for their lives, with remainder to John their son and Maud daughter of John de Grey of Retherfeld (who is still living and is married to Thomas Harecourt, knight) and the heirs of their bodies, by a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence.
Neuport Paynell. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Heir as above, daughter of the aforesaid John son of John and Maud.

DEVON. Inq. taken at Exeter, 24 February, 9 Richard II.
The said John, being seised in demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manor and advowson, gave them in fee to Matthew de Clyvedon and William Monketon, parson of the church of Astyngton, who continued in seisin all his life, and after his death gave the manor and advowson to the said Alice for life, with remainder to John’s right heirs. Alice granted her estate in the premises to William Beauchamp of Warwyk and William Burton, knights, Henry de Ardern, and John de Norhampton, clerk, during whose possession thereof John de Meryet, knight, kinsman and one of the heirs of the said John de Beauchamp, to wit, son of Eleanor one of his sisters, released all his right and claim in the premises to the aforesaid William, William, Henry and John, all of whom except William Beauchamp of Warwyk are dead. Cecily Turbervill, aged 50 years and more, is sister and other heir of the said John de Beauchamp. John de Meryet is 36 years old and more.
Silferton. The manor and advowson of the church, held of Edward Courteney, earl of Devon, services not known.
She died on Tuesday the eve of SS. Simon and Jude, 7 Richard II.
Since her death the aforesaid William Beauchamp of Warwyk, knight, has received all the issues of the manor by himself and his men.

210. Eleanor daughter and heir of John Bate, a minor
Writ of devenerunt, 10 February, 9 Richard II
LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Lincoln, Saturday before St. Gregory, 9 Richard II. (Thirteen jurors).
The said John held no lands &c. in the county on the day of his death; but Hugh de Garewelle of Lincoln was seised in demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned messuages, etc. and gave them to the said John by charter in fee simple, on condition that, if before Midsummer, 4 Richard II, he should pay or cause to be paid on behalf of the said Hugh 80l. to Robert Raulynes of Amcotes and 23l. 15s. 7 1/2d. to John Tostrys of Lincoln, merchant, then the charter of feoffment and the seisin had there on should remain in force, but that otherwise they should be of none effect and Hugh and his heirs and assigns might re-enter the premises. John Bate did not observe the covenants of certain indentures made between him and Hugh, whereupon Hugh re-entered on Monday after Michaelmas, 5 Richard II, and held the premises as his freehold. John did not die in seisin of the premises. Eleanor his daughter and heir was 5 years old and more on the day of his death.
Helmeswelle. A messuage and 8 bovates of land, held of Anne queen of England, as of the manor of Kyrketon in Lyndesey, by service of 21s. rent payable yearly to the said manor, and by suit of court every three weeks; a messuage, held of Gerard de Southill, as of the barony of Redbourne, service not known; and 5s. rent from divers lands &c. which are held of the honor of Richmond, service not known.
Bischopnorton. A messuage, 2 tofts and 3 bovates of land, held of John bishop of Lincoln.
The said Eleanor died on Sunday before Michaelmas last. John de Schrewesbury of Kyrketon in Lyndessey, aged 40 years, and Agnes his wife, and John son of Richard Cooke of Helmeswelle, aged 23 years, are her heirs.

The extent includes toll of the market of Cathorp. Out of the rents of the manor 70s. yearly is paid for sheriff’s aid and 20l. yearly to Brian de Gray, brother of the order of St. John of Jerusalem in England, in pursuance of a grant made to him for life by the said William with the king’s licence.
Normanton, Wilughby, Sucbrook, Thurleyby by Brune, Swaton and Bykyr. 3 knight’s fees, a moiety of a fee and a sixth part of a fee.
