Laverton. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Edmund son of Edmund died on 25 August last. John Moigne, aged 60 years and more, is his heir.

Pleas before the king in Chancery at Westminster in the octave of Martinmas, 7 Richard II.
1013.
SOMERSET. The findings of the first of the above two inquisitions on Edmund son of Edmund Moigne, and also of the inquisition taken on the death of Edmund Moigne (No. 813 above), are quoted. Whereupon John Panes of Purrygg, appearing in the Chancery in person in the said octave, says that Roger Gredele and Joan, his wife, were seised of the said manor of Laverton in right of the said Joan by a fine levied at Westminster on the morrow of the Ascension, 5 Richard II, between James Fitz James, William Vynour, clerk, William Wason and Henry Forester, clerk, querents, and the said Roger and Joan, deforciants, whereby the deforciants acknowledged the manor to be the right of William Vynour, and surrendered it to him and the other querents, except 30s. rent and a rent of 3 lbs. cummin therein which they granted to the querents, to hold to them and the heirs of William Vynour; that by virtue of the said fine the querents were seised of the manor, and afterwards granted it to him (the said John Panes) for 20 years beginning from Michaelmas, 6 Richard II; that he was seised of that estate in the manor until he was removed by the late escheator by colour of the inquisition taken on the death of Edmund Moigne; and that the manor is held immediately of Margaret countess of Norfolk, as of her castle of Strogull. He denies that the manor is held of the king in chief, as is suggested in the inquisitions aforesaid; that either Edmund Moigne or Edmund, his son, died in seisin of the manor; or that the manor was ever in the king’s hand after the death of the former by reason of the minority of the latter, or otherwise, as is suggested in the said inquisitions, until he (John Panes) was removed by the escheator, as stated above. He prays that the king’s hand may be removed from the manor and that it may be demised to him by letters patent on sufficient mainprise until it be decided in the king’s court etc.
William de Horneby, who sues for the king, says that the manor is held of the king in chief, as the inquisitions allege.
Both parties put themselves on the country. So a day is given them to be before the king, wherever he may be in England, in the octave of Hilary next.

The said feoffees continued their said estate until his death, and received the issues. Immediately after his death John Copford and Simon enfeoffed Agnes, who is still living, of the said manor, to hold to her and the heirs of her body by Thomas, with remainder to the right heirs of Thomas.
Moreover, in 6 Richard II, he demised by deed all his other lands etc. in the county, (some of which are held of the countess of Hereford, as of the fee of Maundevill, by knight’s service, and the residue of the countess of Norfolk by service of 20s. quitrent yearly), to Simon Fordham of Colcestre, Simon Badele, William Bynorthyn, now deceased (defuncto), and John Okham, chaplain, telling them to re-enfeoff him and the said Agnes thereof, to hold to them and his heirs. Recital of a writ to the sheriff of Essex, dated 30 November, 7 Richard II, ordering him to warn Thomas atte Lee, to whom the king by letters patent lately committed the custody of the said lands etc. called Hohalle, to be before the king in the Chancery in the quinzaine of Hilary next to shew cause why the said letters should not be revoked and the said lands etc. delivered to Agnes late the wife of Thomas Martell, together with the issues thereof since the death of Thomas; as the said Agnes has claimed that, being in peaceful seisin of the premises by virtue of the first of the above two inquisitions, she was unjustly removed therefrom by colour of the second and by virtue of the commitment to Thomas atte Lee.
The sheriff returned that he had warned Thomas atte Lee accordingly.
Thomas, although solemnly called, fails to appear in Chancery on the day fixed. Agnes appears by Henry Maupas and James Billyngford, her attorneys, and makes her claim in accordance with the first of the above two inquisitions, denying that Thomas Martell died in seisin of the premises. William de Horneby, suing for the king, asserts that Thomas died in seisin. Both parties put themselves on the country.
