LONDON. Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 10 March, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned tenement etc. for life by the courtesy of England after the death of Joan late his wife, daughter of Alice late wife of Edward de Monte Acuto the sister of Margaret Mareschall, countess of Norfolk, the two sisters being daughters and heirs of Thomas de Brotherton, late marshal of England.
Parish of St. Mary Somersete. A tenement and 9 shops with solars built thereon annexed to the said tenement, held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London. The said Margaret, aged 40 years and more, is aunt and next heir of the said Joan.
He died on 15 February last. Robert de Wylughby, knight, Roger lord de Scales and Henry de Ferrariis of Groby, each aged 25 years and more, are his heirs.

MIDDLESEX. Inq. taken at Shordiche, Tuesday after St. Gregory, 5 Richard II.
He died seised of the under-mentioned shops and gardens in his demesne as of fee.
Suburbs of London. 10 shops with gardens annexed on the west side of a street called ‘Goldynglane,’ together with a garden containing 2 a. land adjacent to the said gardens on the west side thereof.
Goswelle. A garden so called, containing 3 r. land.
All held of William Fulbourne, as of his prebend of Fynesbury, by service of 20s. rent yearly.

He held no lands etc. in the county; but he held the under-mentioned knight’s fee by the courtesy of England of the inheritance of Margaret Mareschall, countess of Norfolk.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Balydon, Tuesday after St. Gregory, 5 Richard II.
The earl held no lands etc. in the county in his demesne as of fee or in service; but the under-mentioned manors, together with other manors and lands etc. in divers other counties, were granted by charter of Edward III to Robert de Ufford, late earl of Suffolk, his father, to hold to him and the heirs male of his body, with reversion in default of such heirs to the said king and his heirs. Robert died, and had an heir male, to wit, the said William, who has died without an heir male of his body, so that the reversion now belongs to the king and his heirs.
Gestuyngthorp. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief, as parcel of the earldom of Suffolk, service not known. The extent includes a leet on the feast of St. Margaret.
Dedham. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief, as parcel of the earldom of Suffolk, by knight’s service and the service of paying 2s. to the sheriff’s tourn. The extent includes 6l. 13s. 4d. rent of assise, out of which 6d. yearly has to be paid to the prioress of Caunpes and 2s. to the sheriff’s tourn.
Date of death as above. Henry de Ferers, knight, lord of Groby, Roger de Skales, knight, and Robert de Wylby, knight, each aged 30 years and more, are his heirs.

SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Thorndon, 6 March, 5 Richard II.
The earl held the under-mentioned manors etc. in his demesne as of fee tail by gift and grant of Edward III made to Robert de Ufford, late earl of Suffolk, his father, and the heirs male of the body of the said Robert; and the reversion belongs to the present king and his heirs through failure of male issue of the earl.
Benale. The manor (extent given), whereof a part is held of the countess of Norfolk, as of the castle of Framlyngham, by service of 1d. yearly, another part of the king, as of the honor of Eye, service not known, another part of Robert de Swylyngton, Roger Boys and others, as of their manor of Huntyngfeld, by service of three-quarters of a knight’s fee, and another of the heirs of John Beamund by service of 3s. 4d. yearly. The extent includes a park with deer, a leet held on the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, and another leet of foreign tenants held about Whitsunday, whereof the prior of Ely has part.
Thorndon. The manor (extent given), held of the king as parcel of the honor of Eye. The extent includes a park called ‘Rysanglespark’ and a leet held on Tuesday in Whitsun week.
Combes. A yearly farm of 22l. 6s. 8d. and a yearly scutage of 30s. to be received from the manor, which manor Robert de Swylyngton, Brian de Stapilton and Nicholas Gernon, knights, had by gift and feoffment of the late earl without the king’s licence; and subsequently the late king by his letters patent pardoned the said trespass.
Suffolk county. 20l. yearly of the issues of the county by the hands of the sheriff, on account of the name and honour of earl of Suffolk.
He died on 15 February last without heir male of his body, but whether Isabel, his wife, is pregnant or not the jurors know not. Heirs as last above.

SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Bungeye, 6 March, 5 Richard II.
The earl held the under-mentioned castles and manors etc. for life by the courtesy of England of the inheritance of Margaret Mareschall, countess of Norfolk, one of the daughters and heirs of Thomas de Brotherton, late earl of Norfolk and marshal of England, after the death of Joan, his wife, deceased, daughter of Alice wife of Edward de Monte Acuto, likewise deceased, who was the other daughter and heir of the said earl of Norfolk, by gift and grant of Edward III to the same earl of Norfolk and the heirs of his body, with reversion in default of such heirs to Edward III and his heirs.
Bungeye. The castle, with the manor and borough (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service as parcel of the barony of the earldom of Norfolk. The extent includes a several pasture, called ‘Berewyk,’ pastures called ‘La Brook’ and ‘Le Stowe Park,’ woods called ‘Puterellhegh’ and ’Le Hawt,’ aldergroves called ‘Stowefen’ and ‘Harcroft,’ a market every Sunday, fairs on both feasts of the Holy Cross, a fishery in the common stream (ripa), and a leet held on the eve of Whitsunday.
Framlyngham. The castle and manor, with the advowson of the church (extent given), held as above. The extent includes a market every Saturday, a fair on the feast of St. Michael, 4 parks, and a leet held on the feast of St. Barnabas.
Sohambarres. The manor, with the advowson of the church (extent given), held of the honor of Rychemound by service of 20s. yearly. The extent includes 16 places called ‘marketplaces,’ a park with deer, and a leet held on the feast of St. Barnabas.
Date of death as above. The said Margaret, aged 50 years and more, is daughter and now sole heir of the aforesaid earl of Norfolk, and aunt and heir of the aforesaid Joan.

SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Eye, 5 March, 5 Richard II.
The earl held the under-mentioned castle etc. of Eye, manor of Haghle and hundreds of Hertismere and Stowe in his demesne as of fee tail by gift and grant of Edward III made to Robert de Ufford, earl of Suffolk, his father, and the heirs male of his body. The earl died without heir male of his body, so that the reversion belongs to the king and his heirs; but the jurors do not know whether Isabel, the earl’s wife, is pregnant or not.
The earl lately held the under-mentioned manors of Perham and Ufford and messuages etc. in Dynyngton etc. in his demesne as of fee, and by a fine levied in the king’s court granted them to Roger de Boys, knight, Adam de Hautboys, clerk, John de Pyshale, clerk, Ellis de Byntre, clerk, Reynold de Eclys, Robert de Asshefeld, Roger de Wolferston, Henry Serjaunt and Thomas de Wroxham, to hold to them and the heirs of the said Henry.
The earl lately held the under-mentioned manors of Walsham, Combes, Helmyngham, Baudeseye, Chysylford and Wykes Ufford, and the under-mentioned lands etc. in Wylbeye and castle and town of Orford, in his demesne as of fee, and enfeoffed thereof by charter Robert de Swyllyngton, Brian de Stapilton, Nicholas Gernoun and Roger de Boys, knights, John de Pyshale, clerk, Reynold de Eclys, Ralph de Walsham, William Phelyp, Robert de Asshefeld, Roger de Wolferston, Henry Serjaunt and Thomas de Wroxham, to hold to them and their heirs and assigns; and Edward III by his letters patent pardoned the trespass of the said feoffees in acquiring the manors of Walsham, Combes and Wykes Ufford, and the castle and town of Orford, which are held of the king in chief.
The earl lately held the under-mentioned manor of Huntyngfeld in his demesne as of fee, and long before his death enfeoffed Robert de Swylyngton, the uncle, Nicholas Gernoun and Roger de Boys, knights, John ……………. Wolferston, Robert de Asshefeld, Henry Serjaunt …….. [thereof by licence] of Edward III.

The extent includes a park with deer, a fishery, 10l. 10s. rent of assise with the farm of the borough, 30s. rent of assise in Dalyngo, a leet held on Monday in Whitsun week, pleas etc. of ‘Soknecourt’ and ‘le Barouncourt,’ 6 tourns pertaining to the honor, a market every Wednesday, fairs on the feasts of St. Margaret, St. Bartholomew and the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, and 58l. foreign rent of assise. The following are bailiffs of fees and collectors of the said foreign rent, to wit, the heir of Giles Garveys is bailiff ‘Straunge’ and bailiff ‘Chaumberleyn,’ Robert Parker is bailiff ‘Eyr,’ John Rysyngg is bailiff ‘Turgeys,’ John Redman is bailiff ‘Parker,’ John atte Chirch is bailiff ‘Beru,’ Andrew Lyf is bailiff ‘Suddon,’ John Fannere is bailiff ‘Vaus,’ and Seman Blaunchard and Thomas Clerk are bailiffs of Burgh.
Haghle. The manor (extent given), and the hundreds of Hertismere and Stowe, held of the king in chief, service not known. The extent includes a park with deer, a market every Saturday, a fair on the feast of the Assumption, and a leet held on Thursday in Whitsun week.
Perham. The manor, held of John son of Peter de Breaux, knight, as of his manor of Wysete, by knight’s service.
Ufford. The manor, held of Margaret, countess of Norfolk, by knight’s service.
Dynyngton, Tatyngton, Brundyssh, Farnham and Blaxhale. 2 messuages, 260 a. land, 42 a. meadow, 20 a. pasture, 7 a. wood and 20s. rent, held of the king, as of the honor of Eye.
Walsham. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee and by rendering 16s. yearly at the castle of Norwich.
Combes. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief, as of fee-farm and yearly scutage, by rendering yearly at the Exchequer for the said fee-farm and scutage 23l. 16s. 8d., which sum was released by Edward III to Robert de Ufford, late earl of Suffolk, and the heirs of his body. The said late earl and the now deceased earl, his son, being now dead without heirs male of their bodies surviving, the said 23l. 16s. 8d. of fee-farm and scutage pertains to the king and his heirs.
Orford. The castle and town, held of the king in chief by service of paying 20l. yearly at the Exchequer.
Wykes Ufford. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
Helmyngham. The manor, held of the heir of Peter de Creyk by knight’s service.

NORFOLK. Inq. taken at Costeseye, 3 March, 5 Richard II.
He held the undermentioned manors of Costeseye, Causton and Burgh, and the under-mentioned rents of 20l. and 76l. 16s. 8d., in his demesne as of fee tail by gift and grant of Edward III to Robert de Ufford, late earl of Suffolk, his father, and the heirs male of the body of the said Robert, with reversion in default of such heirs to Edward III and his heirs. He died without heir male of his body, but the jurors do not know whether Isabel, his wife, is pregnant or not.
He lately held the under-mentioned manor of Hykelyngge and messuage etc. and leet in Wynterton and Somerton in his demesne as of fee, and long before his death granted them by charter to Robert de Swylington, Brian de Stapulton and others, to hold to them and their heirs and assigns; and Edward III by his letters patent pardoned the trespass of the said feoffees in acquiring the leet of Wynterton.
He lately held the under-mentioned rent in Heynford in his demesne as of fee, and long before his death alienated it (together with the manor of Perham, co. Suffolk, of which it is parcel) to Roger de Boys, knight, Adam de Hautboys, clerk, and others, to hold to them and their heirs and assigns, as appears in a charter of feoffment, by a fine levied in the king’s court.
Costeseye. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief, service not known. The extent includes a park with deer, 13l. 6s. 8d. common tallage of the whole homage, a watermill beyond ‘Westmyll’ with a fishery in its pond, a fulling-mill with its fishery, a fishery of the sluice of the pond with the fishery of the stew by ‘Frethbregge,’ a water-mill at Bauburgh with the fishery there, a leet held at Whitsun, and two tourns held after Michaelmas and Easter respectively. The manor is charged from time immemorial with a yearly pension of 10l. to the abbot of Bonrepos.
Causton. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief, service not known. The extent includes a park, 30 a. wood called ‘Southagh,’ a rent called ‘keyepens,’ a rent called ‘styksilver’ from an underwood called ‘Lyngwode,’ a fishery called ‘Quenepond,’ a market every Wednesday, a fair on the feast of St. Agnes, a leet on the feast of St. Peter’s Chains, ploughings called ‘govelerthis’ and ‘werkerthes,’ and a rent of a pair of gilt spurs, price 12d.
Burgh. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church; whereof a close called ‘Stokeslande’ is held of the abbot of St. Edmund’s by service of 3s. yearly, 10 a. are held of the prioress of Thetford by service of 5s. yearly, 10 a. are held of Andrew de Brampton, as of his manor of Brampton, by service of 3s. yearly, 2 1/2 a. are held of George de Felbrygg, as of his manor of Crakefeldhall, by service of 2d. yearly, and the residue is held of the king in chief, service not known. The extent includes a park, fairs on the feasts of St. Nicholas and the Annunciation, and a leet at Michaelmas.
Baketon. 20l. yearly rent to be received from the prior of Bromholm and his successors in respect of a fifth part of the manor, as parcel of the honor of Eye, co. Suffolk.
Norfolk and Suffolk. 76l. 16s. 8d. yearly rent to be received by the hands of the sheriff.
Hykelyngge. The manor, held of the earl of Richmond by knight’s service.
Wynterton and Somerton. A messuage, 40 a. land and 3s. 7d. rent, held of Alan de Hygham by knight’s service.
Wynterton. The leet of the town, held of the king by a fee-farm of 20s. to be paid at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff.
Heynford. 100s. yearly rent, parcel of the manor of Perham, co. Suffolk, which manor, with the said rent, is held of John son of Peter de Breaus, knight, as of his manor of Wysete, by knight’s service.

NORFOLK. Inq. taken at Dychyngham, 6 March, 5 Richard II.
The earl held the under-mentioned manors etc. for life by the courtesy of England after the death of Joan, his wife, (as in the above inquisition taken at Bungeye).
Dychyngham. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief by knight’s service as parcel of the barony of the earldom of Norfolk. The extent includes woods called ‘Tyndhagh,’ ‘Chirchehagh,’ and ‘Sext..,’ an aldergrove called ‘Alderkar,’ 20s. rent from the market of Loden, and a leet held on Thursday before Whitsunday.
Norwich castle. 8l. 16d. yearly rent to be received by the hands of the sheriff from the castle of Norwich out of the 33l. 6s. 8d. yearly which Thomas de Brotherton, late earl of Norfolk, used to receive therefrom while he lived.
Halveryate. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service as parcel of the barony of the earldom of Norfolk. The extent includes marshes called ‘Osolmesflet,’ ‘Thurstanesmareys,’ ‘Godrychesmareys,’ ‘Maltmareys’ and ‘Frytholm,’ parcels of a marsh called ‘Mokeresdoles,’ carriage-services to Ocle and Framlyngham, carriage-services to carry letters, and two-thirds of 2 pieces of marsh and pasture containing 980 a. formerly held for life by Joan late the wife of Robert de Morley, knight.
Ersham. The manor (extent given), together with the advowson of the church of Ersham with the chapel of St. Mary there, held of the king in chief by knight’s service as parcel of the barony of the earldom of Norfolk. The extent includes a several pasture called ‘Halledyke,’ a park without deer, woods called ‘Overhagh’ and ‘Cucroft,’ alder-groves called ‘Ocoldfen,’ ‘Westfen’ and ‘Sledergate,’ and rents of a pair of gloves and an arrow.
Dykelburgh. A moiety of the manor (extent given), which entire manor is held of Sir Walter Fitz Wauter by service of 2s. yearly. The extent includes a leet held on the morrow of Michaelmas.

The earl held the under-mentioned manors and advowsons for life by the courtesy of England after the death of Joan, his wife (as in the above inquisition taken at Bungeye).
[Haneworth.] The manor (extent given), with the advowsons of the churches of Colby, Alby and Aldeburgh, held [of the king in chief] by knight’s service as parcel of the barony of the earldom of Norfolk. The extent includes a park without deer, a meadow called ‘Burlesmedwe,’ a pasture called ‘Belhous,’ a market worth nothing because discontinued more than 30 years ago, a rent of two pairs of gilt spurs, price 12d., [and a leet held on the feast of St. Margaret].
[So]uthwalsham. The manor (extent given), [with the advowson of the church] of St. Laurence in the same town, [held of the king in] chief by knight’s service as parcel of the barony of the earldom of Norfolk. The extent includes [a pasture] in Estcroft, and a pasture of 4 bovates in the marshes of …….. [and Ran]deworth.

SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Eye, Monday after Passion Sunday, 5 Richard II, before John Bacun, Robert Dasshefeld and John Staverton.
The earl held the under-mentioned castle, town, manors, honor, hundreds and annuity of 23l. 6s. 8d. to him and the heirs male of his body by gift and grant of Edward III to Robert de Ufford, his father.
He was also seised of the under-mentioned annuities of 76l. 16s. 8d. and 20l. by grant of Edward III to him and the heirs male of his body.
Eye. The castle, town, manor and honor (extent given). The extent includes 19 a. pasture with la Launde in Gosewold, a park, a fishery, lands and a several fishery held at farm by John Bacun, 9l. 16s. 8d. foreign farms pertaining to the manor, to wit, 40s. in …….., 40s. in Dalyngo and 66s. 8d. in Horham, co. Suffolk, and 50s. in Segbrok and elsewhere in the county of Lincoln, a market every Wednesday and Saturday, the fair of Thrandeston held on the feast of St. Margaret, the fair of Asphale held on the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, and the fair of Fynyngham held on the feast of St. Bartholomew (all the profits of which markets and fairs have been received from time immemorial by the burgesses of Eye at a yearly rent of 4l.), 99l. 3s. 2 3/4d. rent of assise of free tenants and bondmen, whereof 20l. is in Baketon, co. Norfolk, castle-guard to be received twice in one year and once in the next, to wit, 7l. 6s. 8d. at each term of payment, profits of courts, tourns and leets, a rent of 2 bushels of ‘skyrewhittes,’ a warren of pheasants, partridges and rabbits, and an office called the office of constable, to which no fee pertains except at the will of the lord. The office of parker and all other offices there ought to be done by the tenants in accordance with their tenure.
Haghle. The manor (extent given, including a park with deer, a market every Saturday, a fair on the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, and profits of courts and leets).
Benhale. The manor (extent given, including a pasture called ‘Langewadefen,’ a park with deer, castle-guard to be received twice in one year and once in the next, profits of courts and leets, a fair on the feast of St. Peter’s Chains, and a rabbit-warren.
Thorndon. The manor (extent given, including a park with deer, a pasture called ‘Brouneswold,’ and a leet held on Tuesday in Whitsun week.
[Hertismere] and Stowe. The hundreds.
Combes. 23l. 16s. 8d. to be received yearly ……….. from the manor.
Norfolk and Suffolk. 76l. 76l. [16s. 8d.] yearly out of the issues of the counties.
Suffolk. 20l. yearly out of the issues of the county on account of the name and honour of earl of Suffolk.

The manor (extent given, including a rent called common tallage to be received from the whole homage, worth 13l. 6s. 8d. yearly, a park with deer, a custom called ‘maltsilver,’ a rent of two horse-shoes, perquisites of courts, tourns and leets, and a warren of rabbits, pheasants and partridges).
Causton. The manor (extent given, including an enclosed park without deer, customs called ‘keyepens’ and ‘slykkesilver,’ a market, a fair on the feast of St. Agnes, a leet on the feast of St. Peter’s Chains, a fishery called ‘Quenespond,’ rents of a pair of gilt spurs, price 12d., and a clove, and a warren with rabbits and partridges).

Bredefeld. A knight’s fee, held by Margaret de Norwyco and her tenants.
Dalham. William de Clopton, knight, holds a piece of land called ……., as of the manor of Dalham, by service of a fortieth part of a knight’s fee.

92 knights’ fees pertain to the honor and castle of Eye, to wit, 88 in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, and 4 in the county of Lincoln.
The advowsons of the abbey of Newebo, co. Lincoln, the priory of nuns of Rydelyngfeld, co. Suffolk, the abbey of Leyston, the church of Melles, the priory of Bromholm, co. Norfolk, and the priory of Eye, pertain to the said castle and honor.
The advowson of the church of Thorndon, co. Suffolk, pertains to the manor of Thorndon.
26 3/4 knights’ fees in Norfolk and Suffolk pertain to the manor of Benhale.
2 knights’ fees pertain to the manor of Gostyngforde (sic), co. Essex.
The advowson of the church of Causton pertains to the manor of Causton.
The manor of Costeseye is well built with houses; the timber in the park is worth 200 marks to sell.
The manor of Dedham is well built with houses; the timber pertaining thereto is worth 100l. yearly.
The timber in the park of Benhale is worth 500 marks to sell; the timber in the foreign wood there is worth 40l.

The priory of Eye, the priory of Bromholm, the abbey of Leyston, the abbey of Newebo, the priory of Snape, the priory of nuns of Redelyngfeld, the churches of Causton and Burgh, a fourth part of the churches of Dallinghoo and Aldiston, and the churches of Thorndon and Melles.
Of the above, the following are assigned as dower to Isabel late the wife of the said earl, with the assent of Richard de Abburbury, knight, John Bacon, clerk, and Hugh de Cotyngham, clerk, acting for the king and queen, and of Thomas More, clerk, and William de Horbury, acting for the said countess, to wit, the advowsons of the priories of Snape and Redelyngfeld and churches of Thorndon and Melles.
List of lands etc. held by the earl, to him and his heirs male, of the king, with reversion to the king in default of such heirs, to wit:—
