LONDON. Inq. taken before the mayor, Thursday the feast of St. Lucy, 49 Edward III.
He died on Sunday the feast of St. Martin last, seised of:—
Parish of St. Peter the Less. A tenement in Castle Baynard ward.
Douegate ward. 24s. yearly rent from a tenement held by Bartholomew Frestlyng.
Parish of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist. A tenement at the corner of Fridaystret held for life by Richard Knouselee by demise of the said Edward at a rent of a pair of gilt spurs. The reversion belongs to Edward and his heirs.
The premises are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.
Thomas le Despenser, aged 2 years and more, is his son and next heir.
LONDON. Inq. taken on the same day before the same escheator and jury.
All Hallows ad Fenum in the Ropery. The advowson of the church.

YORK. Inq. taken at Roderham, 12 January, 49 Edward III.
Kymbirworth. 10 marks yearly rent issuing from the manor for the life of Lionel Dautry, knight, who survives. The manor is held of Euphemia de Heselarton, as of her manor of Malteby, service not known, and was demised by Edward to Lionel for the latter’s life, with reversion to himself and his heirs.
Bautre. The manor, that is, 10 marks yearly rent issuing from tenements in Bautre and Austerfeld, held of the lady de Maulay by knight’s service; and a court, parcel of the manor, held at Bautre every three weeks.
He died on 12 November last. Heir as above.

WARWICK. Inq. made at Chepyngderset, Friday the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, 49 Edward III.
Wynterton. The manor, held of the earl of Warwick, as of the manor of Brayles, by service of half a knight’s fee. It is worth 66s. 8d. yearly and no more, because long before his death the said Edward granted a yearly rent of 10 marks therefrom to Leysaunt de Avene, still living, for life.

Writ to the escheator to make inquisition touching a petition from the said Leysant (Lesandus) alleging that William Strete, Thomas Mortymer and Robert de Perlee, clerk, granted to him, long before the said Edward’s death, a rent of 6l. 13s. 4d. yearly for life from the said manor of Wynterton, as appears by their writing shewn before the king in the Chancery, and that the said rent is in arrear since Edward’s death because the manor has been taken into the king’s hand by reason of the minority of the heir, and praying the king to order that his hand be removed from the said rent. 20 May, 50 Edward III.
WARWICK. Inq. (indented) taken at Chepyng Derset, 20 May, (fn. 1) 50 Edward III.
The said Edward, long before his death, gave the said manor by charter to the said William, Thomas and Robert and their heirs. They were seised thereof accordingly, and at the request of Edward granted the said rent to Leysant de Avene for life in recompense for 100 marks’ worth of land in Wales which Edward had from the said Leysant. Leysant was seised of the rent and in full possession thereof long before Edward’s death, and never released his estate therein to anybody. He received it all the time until Edward’s death.

The extent includes a fishery, rents and farms of tenants within the borough and of free and bond tenants outside the borough, a view of frankpledge, custom and tolls of the fair and market, and a view of frankpledge at Ivyngbery.

Edward le Despenser, the elder, deceased, and Anne his wife, also deceased, held all the premises in fee tail by a fine levied in the king’s court. Anne survived Edward, and, being sole, surrendered them to Edward named in the writ, son and heir of the said Edward and Anne in the said entail; and he died seised thereof.

SUSSEX. Inq. taken at Hertefeld, Friday the feast of St. Andrew, 49 Edward III.
Retherfeld. The manor (extent given), lately parcel of the earldom of Gloucester, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes 56 acres of poor and valueless land called ‘mareys’ and ‘buscaill,’ 22a. meadow in divers fields worth no more than 7d. the acre because reedy and marshy, a chace, acreage not known, which costs 100s. yearly for fencing in excess of any profits, a fulling-mill, a custom of 6l. 12s. yearly called ‘Souswyn,’ a custom of 50s. called ‘Andrewesyeve,’ a fair on the feast of St. Denis, two leets yearly, a plot called ‘Errigg’ within the enclosure of the chace, and a park with deer called ‘Hamsell’ within the chace. Thomas Salman holds a fourth part of a knight’s fee in Fernthe in right of Joan his wife by suit to the court of the manor aforesaid. Long before his death the deceased granted a yearly pension of 40l. out of the manor to Edward Dalyngregge, knight, for life, together with the office of ‘maysterforster’ of the said chace and park. There should be and used to be a chamberlain and 4 foresters there, each receiving 1d. daily, and a forester on ‘le Waterdoune’ receiving 1 1/2d. and there is there a ‘raungier’ throughout the whole chace, who receives 2d. a day.
Edward died on 13 November last. Heir as above.

Chetelhampton. The manor (extent given, including a watermill with a fishery).

Chitelhampholtz. A close so called, wherein are 100 deer and more. Ralph Carminow has common of pasture therein for all manner of beasts throughout the year.

He charged the manor with yearly rents of 46l. in favour of Thomas Lyons, William Davyntre and Thomas Bray for their lives, and 100s. in favour of Gylemyn Godel for his life.

BERKS. Inq. taken at Stanford, 11 December, 49 Edward III.
Stanford. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church and the view of frankpledge of Westhenneye, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes rents of 64 hens and a quarter and 7 1/2 bushels of wheat as church-scot (churs’). The manor is charged by his grant with an annuity of 20l. to John Wythmale, knight, for life.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Asshele, 28 December, 49 Edward III.
Asshele. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief for a fourth part of a knight’s fee. The extent includes 36 1/2a. meadow at Stanbrygge, a several pasture at Staunden, 150a. several wood adjoining the forest of La Bere, 40 cocks and hens as church-scot (churset’), and rents of bondmen and 40 cocks and hens as church-scot in Little Sumborn. The manor is charged by his grant with an annuity of 10 marks to Henry Yakesle for life; and John Talmache is to have yearly a sparrowhawk or 2s. at Midsummer therefrom.

Boreford. The manor (extent given, including 20l. rents in the borough from free tenants belonging to the manor, and 4l. from the market with the borough court).
Shupton. The manor (extent given). It is charged by grant of the said Edward with an annual rent of 40l. in favour of John Daunteseye, knight.
Caveresham. The manor (extent given, including a ferry with a boat). It is charged by his charters with 20l. yearly to Robert Turbuc for life, and 11l. 11s. 11d. to John Bonevyll for life.
All the above he held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Chadlynton. The hundred, held of the king at a fee-farm of 110s. yearly.

WORCESTER. Inq. taken at Upton on Severn, 5 December, 49 Edward III.
Upton on Severn. The manor (extent given), held of the bishop of Worcester in socage, by fealty and service of 100s. yearly. Lambert de Weston, knight, and John de Aldrynton were seised thereof in fee, and enfeoffed thereof the said Edward and Elizabeth, his wife, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of Edward. All the tenants attorned to Edward and Elizabeth, who continued their estate until Edward’s death. The extent includes lands in fields called Byryfeld, Collyngeshurst (often overflowed by the Severn), Stonyleye (adjoining Malvern chace), and Talvardesleye, Stogmour and Alfardesfeld (all on the hills), 60a. meadow often flooded by the Severn, a pasture called ‘le Park,’ 20l. rent of assise, whence 100s. yearly is payable to the bishop of Worcester, and a kiddle worth 40d. a year only, because broken.
He died on Sunday the feast of St. Martin, 49 Edward III, and Elizabeth survived him and still lives. They had between them an heir called Thomas, who is two years old and more.

Byscheleye. The manor (extent given, including a park of 300a. with deer, and 20a. meadow often flooded by the Severn), held of the king in chief by knight’s service.

Teukesbury. The manor and borough (extents given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent of the manor includes 71s. rent of serjeanty, a rent called ‘medselver,’ and a view of frankpledge and other courts. The extent of the borough includes 10l. 7s. 5d. rent of assise, with the rent of Oldebury, ‘fulstall’ and stallage, 60s. toll, and pleas &c.
Faireford. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes two fairs at the feasts of the Ascension and St. James the Apostle, a warren, and two law-days (legales dies) at Hockday and Michaelmas.
Sobbury. The manor (extent given), with the borough of Chepyngsobbury (extent given) annexed thereto, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent of the manor includes a pasture called ‘Mansedmede,’ several from the Purification until Michaelmas, a close of pasture called ‘Leigrave,’ and a park with deer. The extent of the borough includes two fairs at the feasts of the Ascension and St. John the Baptist.
He died on 11 November last. Thomas his son, aged 2 years on 22 September last, is his heir.
HEREFORD AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES. Inq. taken at Hereford, 4 January, 49 Edward III.
Ewyas. The castle and a moiety of the lordship, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, as of the right and inheritance of Elizabeth his wife, who survives.
He died on 11 November last. Thomas his son, aged 2 years, is his heir.
